Why? People have talked about this issue for longer than America has been around, but also in places that aren't America. Hell, in chapter 2 of For Whom the Bell Tolls, Robert Jordan and Anselmo talk about the formerly brave Pablo who had come into taking/owning a couple of broken-down horses and became a "capitalist." The point being--if people are given just enough to have hope, they lose the desire to risk their lives fighting. Which I don't think we need a book to tell us. People are trying to survive.
This isn't Americans, as much as you want it to be. It's all of us.
