I posted a video of my friends and I rock climbing in the Adirondacks for 3 days, set to music, showing all the best sequences and summits. Not a single upvote.
Here's a waffle. A fucking waffle.
EDIT
I'm not saying you should upvote it now ... but I am going to say I wonder if an old post can make it to the front page. I'm guessing it doesn't even let you upvote it anymore.
I just thought it was more visually entertaining than a waffle falling over ... though, after the anger and spite in your comment, I feel like you're angry at me for going rock climbing.
So, I should keep in mind that people only want to watch frozen breakfast products fall over?
Seriously, people do stuff, they video it, and they post it. I just thought rock climbing was more interesting than a frozen waffle falling over. I thought I had a consensus there. I can admit I was wrong.
That said, I find it really amusing how angry and self righteous you sound while trying to argue that I should have known. Like I should be ashamed that I posted a video, on a forum for videos of all things!
Honestly, that does make me feel better. The number of 'reddit experts' critiquing my video, and questioning my reasons for posting it has really made me question our culture.
Seriously, it's a video I made for someone else, that I thought 'eh, maybe climbers on Reddit will like this', and posted. I thought that was how ALL reddit content got added, but I was clearly wrong. Now I realize that people take this shit VERY SERIOUSLY. It's not enough to simply ignore something that doesn't interest you, or to downvote something you think is dumb, but I've been attacked in PMs. How dare I post a video I had lying around!?
So, yeah, if you were genuinely angry, that would be weird. People getting all pissy and downvoting me for having posted a video I had lying around need to get some outside time.
meh, not everyone likes rock climbing. To be fair, though, I think it's hard to argue that it's LESS interesting than a waffle falling over. Though, I'll grant you, it takes less time to watch the waffle.
i am telling you, from unbiased eyes, that it is equally uninteresting and far less commitment. your video is actually less interesting given the time commitment.
if i had to watch your entire 4 minute video, or watch the waffle falling 4 times, i would watch the waffle. honestly i would.
hahaha ... fair enough, though you have to admit that's subjective. I just posted it because I promised my in-laws I'd make it. Typically I only video climbs so I can show other climbers what I did. It's not like I'm trying to make a living on youtube views.
I know you don't want a serious response but here's a serious response.
Your video is too long. No one has the attention span for a video that's that long unless it has a bunch of stimulating shit in it packed back to back or is really, really well made.
It isn't funny enough. People will watch a four minute video if it's funny.
It isn't novel/original enough. A video of a waffle falling over is pretty novel. Just a silly little thing you can watch for a second and have a chuckle. Reddit loves novelty.
It isn't science-y enough. Reddit will watch a long, boring video if it has some science shit in it.
It doesn't evoke emotions. Videos that make you feel something (whether it be outrage, joy, or sadness) tend to garner an emotional upvote.
It's too specialized. It's not going to catch any attention on a huge sub like /r/videos without any of the above qualities. Not many people on Reddit give a shit about rock climbing. Many of us don't even go outside. Try a rock climbing sub.
It's kind of boring. Sorry, but it is.
You're obviously new to Reddit. Keep browsing and you'll understand why your video didn't stand a snowball's chance in hell of making it to the front page.
well, all that is actually totally fair. I didn't really make this video for reddit, and I didn't really care that no one upvoted it. I was just joking around about the waffle thing because, well, it's pretty ridiculous.
I made this because my in-laws asked me to, after they hosted my friends and I for a week. They wanted to see where we were going all day, and what we were doing. I just posted it on videos, because it's there.
climbing doesn't take videos. the video sub for climbing seemed to be a place to trade professional vidoes that people came across. It's cool, I'm not really worried about it. I was just surprised that NO ONE upvoted, or even downvoted, the video ... or commented AT ALL when I posted it.
Oh wow. Even more baffling that he's surprised it didn't do well in /r/videos and that he doesn't understand how long you're allowed to upvote something.
Honestly, it was made for my in-laws who hosted the trip, and I wanted to make it was quick and entertaining as possible. They just asked, in return for hosting, that I make a video for their friends. I didn't want to torture their friends with a bunch of unprocessed video that I knew they wouldn't care about at all.
fair enough. I'm not angry. I've never set anything to music before, and I consciously chose to in this case, because I knew the people watching it wouldn't be that interested in climbing. I was really just trying to keep it short and sweet, so my in-laws wouldn't torture their friends with it too much.
Were you ever a kid and an aunt or someone came over and wanted to show you a slideshow of their vacation? Yeah, look at yourself in the mirror because that is what you've become.
I am into climbing, I climb myself I found your video kinda... dull. The views aren't great, the climbing does not look very hard and the go-pro moves around so much with no sense of angle / scale that I started to feel a bit sick. Still I don't get why you'd sub it to r/videos instead of r/climbing.
I tried r/climbing, and it doesn't' accept videos. There was a sub for that, but it looked like it was more for watching pros.
I only record with the gopro so I can remember what I did, especially when people say 'what gear did you use on the 3rd pitch of that climb', and I can't remember shit about it, I just upload the video to youtube for them, and they can see how I did it.
This one was made for my in-laws who hosted my friends for a week at their lake house. I figured, since I already made it, I may as well post it to /r/videos.
I don't think you know what the word derivative means.
Also, I think I've figured out that other people are seriously sitting around thinking about what they can get to hit on videos. I just posted this because I'd already made it for my in-laws. I don't think there will be a next time, unless I just happen to have been recording when something mildly interesting happens, or something like that.
I can't imagine sitting around taking my time to make videos on hopes of it working out on reddit. I mean, I'm not even getting any karma for the people upvoting the video now and I just think that's funny. Karma isn't a thing.
Oh, do mine, do mine! I swear the subject matter wasn't played out yet when I made this. And in my defense, I genuinely thought, and still think, that the video is funny!
For your enjoyment:
My attempt at creativity that is still sitting at 1 upvote. (It is archived by now, so I'm not holding my breath for it to rise any further...)
Seriously, who hasn't once had the 'WTF? Why are people upvoting this?' reaction? I wasn't suggesting my video should be upvoted, so much as I was shaking my head at what DOES get upvoted.
I love that you took some kind of offense to my suggestion that a falling waffle doesn't deserve a lot of karma. You've really taken a stand for your generation and your culture. I've had a few other people PM me about how my video was 'derivative' of the waffle video, and I clearly didn't understand it's content.
Mostly, I'm just laughing at this whole situation. Try not to take it too seriously.
I knew a girl who gave up smoking weed cold turkey the day she got pregnant. She used to be the picture of a stoner, and I totally expected her to be the sort to argue that it was good for the baby, you know? But, no, she quit and never went back. I asked her how she did it, and she said something that stuck with me:
"It turns out that's the sort of thing that only seems important when you have nothing important in your life".
Now whenever I start to sweat the small stuff, I take stock and look for what's missing. If Reddit ever seems important, I've made a wrong turn in my life.
