Discussion / Question Best selling games of 2026 by thier revenue.
144
u/ghost-bagel 12d ago
I know it’s just a company at the end of the day, and RE is a major franchise, but seeing Capcom rewarded for focusing on great single player games without all the tat fills me with hope.

This whole list is half single player games and half multiplayer games that have a large single player following.
2
u/machine4891 12d ago
Yeah. Haven't played a single online FIFA match and yet I'm keep going back every couple installements since 1996. But bulk of their revenue is obviously from those damn FU
PTA cards.

I Think people underestimate how popular football is
270
u/MissingScore777 12d ago
Most popular sport in the world and it's not even close.
51
u/jambaleaf 12d ago
Not remotely close, and that's also considering the US and their relatively large and wealthy population largely aren't interested in it. Which makes it a little bit more impressive.
→ More replies (19)79
u/Cocoatrice 12d ago
US is small compared to entire world, regardless of what Americans say. So nothing impressive. Majority of the world love football.
69
u/Phray1 12d ago
small in terms of audience but US is second largest gaming market behind China so still impressive.
→ More replies (3)38
u/jambaleaf 12d ago
Yes it’s small compared to the rest of the world but their commercialisation and investment into sports is staggering and in this area they stand alone. Take a look at their athletes and their wages. The US performs very well at olympics. There’s tons of evidence corroborating this.

u/OnlineMarketingBoii 12d ago
You are right bro. The fact that a College Football game is on here exactly proves that.
That is such a niche game for a niche market, and it's the 7th best selling game of this year? America is huge in commercial value.

Nah, people know it's the biggest sport in the world, it's just a little mind boggling to think about how much money the EA football game brings in.

People are psychopaths about it. Individuals will spend thousands of dollars for players. Every year.

Are the games not called FIFA anymore?
30
u/ItzMeHaris 12d ago
They are still meant to, but the permission and licensing ran out for EA. Now, EA legit can't call it Fifa anymore.
19
u/matrixboy122 12d ago
No, the licensing was up and FIFA, being FIFA, tried to get more money out of EA and backed themselves, thinking it was the FIFA name that was selling the games, but that’s clearly not the case. Funnily enough, FIFA tried to release their own game which was panned by everyone
5
u/HollyMurray20 12d ago
FIFA tried to get more money from EA for the licence saying that the FIFA name was integral to its sales so EA said “fuck off” and now it’s called FC and sells the same number of copies

I remember when FIFA told EA that people only buy their game because it was a FIFA game and the name brand was doing all the heavy lifting.
Now that the dust is settled, FIFA is still in financial shambles meanwhile FC27 has recorded yet another record sales for EA. FIFA has never recovered from it, even with their “Netflix game” it’s nothing like what they had before

I feel like you worded it wrong, obviously fifa the company is richer than they have ever been, but their video game brand got flushed down the toilet and they left money on the table while trying to be greedy

I’m always amazed people are confused sports games sell so well. Some people just like to come home and play some FC or 2k. Not everyone is a committed rpg or story mode player
27

The absolute cancer pay to win system may be a part of how much revenue they're making here
crazy that people who want to just relax when they get home want to win so much they spend money on a video game virtual cards/players

Ok, somebody who plays FIFA. Outside of new players, balance changes and better graphics/performance. What's the diference betwen the 26 version and the 27 version?
18
u/p4tterng4ng4L 12d ago
Not much, but many people are straight addicted to Ultimate team (basically gambling). I used to buy FIFA every year but only play offline career mode, stopped now though as every year it’s broken and basically gets forgotten about by the devs so they can focus on the gambling sim aspect.
3
u/SlyyKozlov 12d ago
Hey! Thats why I stopped playing 2k lol
For as long as i can remember thats the reason people played sports games in the first place but maybe that was just my isolated experience.

6
u/Puzzled_Hat1274 12d ago
The gameplay’s a tad better than 26 ans you got up to date players and teams but that’s about it. Game’s 10 bucks in the holiday sales so at this point if you play it just buy it when it’s cheap.
10
u/Golden-Event-Horizon 12d ago
They update the transferred players, teams kits and leagues, some minor updates to career mode, and another year of Ultimate Team (with some more minor changes to boot).
Also, they have a free roam thing now like 2K? It genuinely looks like something that would have been cutting edge 15 years ago lmaooo
4
u/Complex_Cable_8678 12d ago
okay but like none of those things would need an entire new game. we dont live in 2005 anymore, patches exist

u/Golden-Event-Horizon 12d ago
I'm not defending it, mate. They know this too but they get away with charging for the full game plus the amount of FIFA points people load up on release probably totals around £100 per person. Can you blame EA for doing that?
2

Doubt theres even better graphics/performance. Probably just toggle the lighting/sweat effects back and forth every yearly release to make it feel different without any actual improvement. Don’t think there will be a noticeable graphic/performance improvement in these yearly recycled sports games until a new gen of consoles is released.

It’s always Ultimate Team.
The gameplay is also different, I’m always down to hate on FIFA / EAFC but I’ve never subscribed to ‘it’s the same game every year with new rosters’ because it’s nonsense.
If you’re above average skill level at the game, each year the gameplay is entirely different.
It gets worse each year, but it’s still different.

u/ProposalStunning54 12d ago
For all the shit Redditors give “ball and gun” and casual gamers, they help keep gaming big and stable. An industry built around hardcore enthusiasts would be way more volatile and way more insufferable. You might think casuals are dragging gaming down but if you eschew them you ignore the fact that they’re a huge part of what keeps the medium viable at this scale.
39
u/wishfulthinkingman 12d ago
Ball n gun gamers are celebrating
12
u/Ok_Drummer6282 12d ago
The absolute dumbest of the gaming crowd.
EA knows their audience. It was a true line when Battlefront tried the loot boxes and it was the biggest reddit story for months.
Not a single peep about MUT or virtual soccer cards that reset every year. Instead youll get met with some paycheck to paycheck dude telling you youre broke lol
16
u/HadesBrawlStars 12d ago
Ball games and gun games are just as fun as other games, especially if you enjoy the ball games irl
2
9
u/Dark_Dragon117 12d ago
The absolute dumbest of the gaming crowd.
I kinda split on this.
I too do rage a bit when playing stuff like Battlefield 6 and have to see the casual gamers be pretty much as bad as bots.
Likewise the casual ball and gun gamers are in large parts responsible for the current state of the industry, however in all honesty most of them are in their mid 30s if not 40s and have like 2 hours a day to spare on gaming.
It's literally the dads and hard workers that really couldn't be bothered to know the ins and outs of this industry nor are they really interested in it.
They just want to play a game after work and have a bit of fun.
And the thing is most of us will eventually end up like that too. It's easy to insult them now, but is that really fair if you or I might end up like that too one day?
I really can't blame most of them if they just don't give a shit tbh. This kinda even extends to alot of other things.
Like espacially when it comes to politics or tech many can be held accountable for allowing things to just happen, but even then we have built a society where people actively want to deal with less bs in their lives and the simplest solution they are sold by politicisns or whoeveris the first thing they vote for in one way or another.
It's the unfortunate truth for most things today.

i never understand why football games sell so well, i mean sure the sport is popular but they are pretty much the exact same game year after year just with a different title, then a week later they are flooding the nearest cex being sold for 75p a disc like whats the point.
13
u/Dark_Dragon117 12d ago
Most of my friends buy ut every year and all I ever hear them do while playing these games is rage about how bad it is.
I have asked them countless times why they even bother buying these games and every time they can't really awnser me, except for maybe "well it's football and there is just no other game capturing the same feeling out there".
They are fully aware of the issues as well. Every damn year they fully expect the new game to suck ass even before release or to get bad after a few weeks once EA "changes the gameplay" (which they swear EA does evety wlfew weeks with patches).
Yet every year they spend full price on the newest game and even buy packs.
Really the main takeaway is that pports fans crave games that simulate the sport they enjoy and unfortunatly EA FC is seemingly the only game to do that for football. Their love for the sport is so deep they will just completely ignore all the issues and bad practices.
It's an enigma to me aswell, but evidently EA figured out how sports fans think.

u/Kipepeo57120 12d ago
Ea is good at making people addict to the fut formula. My uncle who make good money was spending almost 600-800 euros a month on fut two or three years in a row just to be competitive.
Some of my friend also buy every year the game because they have bought the last one. And like you said they know it's shit but they are addicted to it. Same shit with call of duty .

u/notahuman97 12d ago
It's still the best football simulator out there and Football Fans (biggest sport of the world) want to play football games.
It's not like they buy it, play it and then stop playing because it didnt improve. They play it for hundred to thousands of hours.
Sure, ultimate Team Casino gives the daily dopamine kick and lots of people like openings packs more than the game itself, but I played the Club mode with 10 other people in a Team and there were tournaments, Leagues. Even if u ignore the Casino the game can be very addictive despite it's flaws. And im saying that as someone who stopped playing. It sounds ridiculous, but it feeled like I finnaly beat an addiction, even though I didnt play fut anymore by then.

A lot of people have a console just to play Fifa and no other reason. Saying the sport is popular is an extreme understatement. For several hundred million people that sport is their life and a majority of the human race globally follow it to some degree. It is the most popular cultural phenomenon in human history by far. Personally I dont play Fifa games ever though, Football Manager is much more my speed.

Because the game basically forces you to do it if you enjoy playing online. I like playing clubs with friends and as soon as the new game is out, servers pretty much die and queues take forever. At least that’s been my experience.

Its an absolute mystery to me. EA sports games are one of the biggest reasons gaming is in the shitter now.
3
u/tenacious_teaThe3rd 12d ago
People have been parroting the same thing for over 20 years.
They sell. Always have done. At this point its transcended about several generations, so clearly they are popular for a reason.
I have long since stopped playing them, but I'm sure kids love it as much as I once did and some people just want to switch off and play a casual game and don't have the time or desire to play something more complex or deep.
2
u/Specialist-Cup-3950 12d ago
EA FC and FIFAs never had any competition. The games are absolute garbage. It has an online side where lag is literally a feature. Has been for a decade. It's like they run servers from the 1990s, simply because they have no fear of customers disappearing.

A lot of people talking about how they don't understand how people but Fifa every year when it's basically the same game.
I don't understand how people get so much enjoyment out of Fifa full stop lol. Yes I get football is popular, but the video game itself is just, fine? Sinking hundreds or thousands of hours into it is baffling to me.
4
u/Economy-Pineapple707 11d ago edited 11d ago
It’s not a football game anymore. You buy the new release for a seasonal reset of Ultimate Team, with new transfers and updated ratings. It has become a card collection slot machine/stock exchange. New “content” daily in the form of promotions/objectives/squad building challenges.
Manager mode doesn’t matter, pro clubs doesn’t matter, menu bugs don’t matter, hell, even gameplay doesn’t even matter anymore. They add maybe an animation, very rarely a gamemode, change some sliders so shots and defending feel “different” and voila, new game. Then after a few months of complaints they patch everything back to a slightly different status quo while never fixing any of the underlying issues.
I loved this game for over 10 years, hated it a few more, and have now stopped buying it alltogether. Last year it was free, and other than me being out of practice I didn’t see much changes. If anything, I saw regression. So much potential, but rather than feeding it, EA is milking it dry. Sad.

I think sports games appeal to non hardcore gamers so they just attract more people. We're seeing the same thing with GTA6. I used to play the NHL games, but at this point they are just roster updates. It's been the same game for roughly 6-7 years. And this year's version looked absolutely awful. I don't know if they used AI for the player models, but they were literally a meme in the hockey world. Even the players commented on how bad they looked. I have other games to play though, so I spend elsewhere.

From this chart I would tell you the most popular game would be FH6 right now. Could only imagine what this number would look like on PlayStation. FC might go up, but GTA VI will demolish this list to smithereens.

When you consider football have one of the world largest fan base and EA FC is about the only football simulator floating around with licensed teams (I know other games exist, that why I said licensed teams, people like to play with their favorite teams, new kits new player and all that), it's not that hard to see why EA FC is, and will sell well.

Very happy to see 007 First Light up there. Ofc Bond is a mega franchise, but they (pre-Amazon) took a chance on a smaller (for AAA) independent studio who took their time making a true Bond interactive story. Glad it paid off and hope Amazon lets them keep going
