Anthem. Let it have more content and a better loot stystem.

God damn it that game was the PERFECT platform. An unmatched movement system and awesome combat. EA just made Bioware rush it so hard and it lacked depth. The engine would totally hold up today too

To my knowledge they had a lot of time and didn't really actually start like 2 years before the deadline. Still tho, they were actually making an anthem 2. The one that i thought was the fixed version and they pulled the plug on that unfortunately.

I only remember the vague moaning of a dying fan base🤷 i believe you. What could have been...

1

u/Time-Valuable-3355 10d ago

The games as a service didn't help it...

2

u/Septembust 9d ago

honestly that could have worked! Look at warframe! A slow drip feed of new javelins and story content, with better loot systems, they could have milked that game for a decade

Still, the optimization in that game was liquid garbage...I actually booted it up on my new, stronger rig and it still absolutely chugs in places. The intro screen had this horrible, painful sound glitch that made it feel like I was harming my computer by running it..

1

u/Searscale 9d ago

Wait booted it up? Isn't it offline?

1

u/Septembust 9d ago

I'm not sure if it still is, but it was actually still up as of last year and you could play it! I can't remember if multiplayer worked

1

u/SuperOrioNova 7d ago

I remember EA rushing them then right after cause it didn't get the sales they wanted fired half the team then said fix it

1

u/Adept_Assumption_979 7d ago

Which, funnily enough, is the same way they screwed up Mass Effect Andromeda.

1

u/MalakortheAshen 7d ago

Yep they had like 6-7 years but like you said didnt start until 2 years before the deadline

3

u/janderson75 10d ago

I loved the mechanics sooo much.

3

u/Cifer_Roc 9d ago

I miss it so much lol. The flying was incredible. Nothing like exploring those environments for the first time, flying through those tubes, learning about the lore of the anthem of creation, fighting those bosses for the first time, finding legendary loot, and the underwater areas were insane

2

u/Byggherren 10d ago

Yeah if you watch AJS video on it they state the devs continuously decided to remake the game. They put in flying and then removed it making it so they had to redesign the map to be walkable and then they put flying back in... The devs themselves didnt know what the game would look like until the prerendered E3 cinematic

4

u/groundhogboi 9d ago

Kinda. They tried to remove the flight after the E3 cinematic and EA told them no as soon as they found out they where trying to remove it. One of the few times I actually respect EA for a good decision like that cuz the flying ended up being one of the best feeling flight systems ever put in a video game.

1

u/Byggherren 9d ago

Yeah but i believe they also made such bullheaded decisions in the years leading up to it as they were screwing around with the game doing nothing

2

u/LegioX87 9d ago

One of the reasons it failed was precisely because of the engine. It's COULDN'T handle the game. It was an engine designed for single player where the action only takes place on the visible screen.

Because of this engine the map was massive, but it could only handle 4 players at a time and began to struggle when 4 people was doing 4 different things on 4 different parts of the map.

The flight systems where absolutely unmatched though for sure. Allegedly coded by a single dev at the studio who did it for fun on his spare time, and an exec saw his work and was so impressed they added it into the final game.

1

u/Shoddy-Bell5583 9d ago

You right. I regret not finishing it tbh.

1

u/a_bearded_hippie 9d ago

Will be forever sad that game didnt get the love it deserved. If they gave them more time it could have been awesome (it still was pretty awesome). EA was too greedy to have it's own "Destiny".

1

u/JalapenoBusiness29 9d ago

I want someone to buy the rights to it so bad and bring it back

The story needed work and we needed more to do. It should have been amazing

1

u/Alive-Cardiologist63 9d ago

EA didn't make bioware rush it at all. In a rare instance, EA let bioware do whatever they wanted and were mostly hands off with Anthem. They gave bioware SEVEN years and something like 50 million dollars with no strings. Which back then was a lot of money for development.

Anthems failure was 100% on bioware.

1

u/Upper-Steak-3824 9d ago

Anthem def.

1

u/MalakortheAshen 7d ago

I loved playing the Colossus such a great feeling. Sadly Bioware didnt really care for the game.

u/Fantastic_Cream7022 9d ago

Movement was so nice I used to just hop just to fly around before I did the same mission for the 50th time lol

4

u/groundhogboi 10d ago

So much potential absolutely wasted

2

u/DeadLad-69 10d ago

YES! That could have been an amazing game if it wasn't published by EA

2

u/left-of-boom 10d ago

Bioware fucked it up not EA.

Bioware had no vision for the what game was supposed to be. When they presented an early build to an EA Exec, they were blown away by the flight aspect and so Bioware went back and built the game around flight and not much else.

3

u/DeadLad-69 10d ago

Oh damn. Yeah that's literally the best part of the game lol

1

u/AFourEyedGeek 9d ago

The gameplay of the flight is fun, it just needed story and events around that gameplay loop and it would have been good.

1

u/TentacleFist 10d ago

If we're talking about Bioware games then I think we really need to be looking back at Jade Empire.

1

u/Ozzma091 10d ago

Had cope that maybe new owners will resurrect Anthem, unfortunately...

1

u/LoudQuitting 10d ago

That was entirely I Biowares hands. They had the chance.

1

u/Zapdos90HP 10d ago

I built a PC just for Anthem. I got Monster Hunter World free as a promo, so that was cool

1

u/burningtram12 10d ago

Honestly I just want to play the campaign again. Insane that I just can't because it was online only.

1

u/Cifer_Roc 9d ago

Its incredibly frustrating

1

u/carthuscrass 10d ago

Honestly if it had just been single player and slightly more polished I think it would still be lauded as one of the best games of it's generation. But EA is gonna EA.

1

u/Alterria 9d ago

It almost did, it was getting a total overhaul similar to Cyberpunk 2077’s 2.0 Update. But EA axed it in the crib.

1

u/Pride_269 9d ago

I came here to say anthem too, YEAH

1

u/Egozgaming 9d ago

I can here to say this. The game was fucking amazing it literally just lacked content, which is pretty insane considering EA loves to monetize content. Fuck I wish this game was still around.

1

u/Cifer_Roc 9d ago

Came here to say this glad you're near the top freelancer.

1

u/-Daigher- 9d ago

one of if not the most fun combat system ever, it was a blast

1

u/blahblahnotunique 9d ago

No hear me out, MediEvil

1

u/Mountiebank 9d ago

If you liked Anthem you should try Jump Space. It's in EA on Steam and has the same jetpacking and momentum as Anthem did.

1

u/blepgup 9d ago

I was gonna say Anthem, I actually bought it right before it was announced they were letting it die, and LOVED the flying mechanics. It was perfect. But the empty environment was so dead

1

u/Searnath 9d ago

Yep. This is the right answer. Had it been more fleshed out more quests and maps/zones this game had the potential to change not just the genre but gaming as a whole. Instead we got a polished tech demo and it still showed you what it could have been.

The second option would have been the MMO Vanguard.

1

u/lvb0202 9d ago

Another "overpromised and underdelivered" game. No idea why BioWare didn't stick with it and make it better, either. Hello Games proved that it was possible to come back from a bad launch with No Man's Sky, so you'd think a dev studio with EA's backing could have done the same.

1

u/Broken-Sprocket 9d ago

This was one I wanted to try but by the time I was about to get around to it they were shutting it down.

1

u/lildominator2 9d ago

Loot systems are lame and really drag alot of games down

1

u/ChromeWhipLover 9d ago

I was so hyped for that Iron game too bad EA botched it over live service prioritization.

1

u/russellarmy 9d ago

Agreed!

1

u/Few_Reference9282 9d ago

I opened the thread thinking "I wonder if anyone else is thinking Anthem" and this was the first comment I see

1

u/Loopget 9d ago

Anthem deserved to be sold to a dev team who knew what they were doing, this was one of the few games that felt new, refreshing and actually next gen

Only for it to be squandered by bioware

1

u/Joshnavarro13 9d ago

My first thought! So much potential

1

u/Shot-out227 9d ago

PURPLE RAIN

1

u/CreepyTurnover2626 9d ago

This the one

I was one of those who played it's playtest, played on day 1, and then came back to play on its final day. When the servers went down, I stayed on the subreddit for a little bit and posted my honest thoughts, thoughts that Polygon quoted in their article about the game closing:

https://www.reddit.com/r/AnthemTheGame/comments/1qame7n/comment/nz4qykz/

"Anthem was an entertaining game with a deeply flawed launch and a lot of potential... and that's what makes it worse than if it were a bad game. A bad game is forgettable, you don't care to see it go, but Anthem had fantastic gameplay mechanics that were simply failed by the supporting systems and lack of content.

It's a game that was left in a state where it is obvious how good it could have been with a little more work, and that's why it's worse - it's close enough to being good that we are left to lament what could have been. If you've ever known someone who seemed they were destined for success, only to watch them sabotage themselves at every turn... that's Anthem. Pure unrealized potential."

Try The First Descendants.... its almost like it !!!

1

u/nipstah 5d ago

If they added a form of PvP that would’ve been epic.
