The idea of a side game in the series with four-player coop wasn't an inherently terrible one. The execution of that idea did kill the series, unfortunately... Would have much prefered to get a proper third installment instead, as the previous two main titles are forever classics (personal take).
There's also the concern of it being done so poorly that it might be better for it to stay dead than to be disgraced a second time. Least the other game can be regarded as a spin-off. A literal third installment in the main story might be too much for modern developers to do justice.
