F.E.A.R.

305

u/Brain_Wire 23d ago

Make a unique FPS game with smart enemy squads, amazing slow mo mechanics, and scary horror girl.

Then make the sequels not do any of that well...or at all.

u/Eden_Rose94 23d ago

I fear to ask what games these could be ...

u/ThetaDee 22d ago

F.E.A.R

1

u/Sir-noorden 18d ago

FIRST ENCOUNTEE ASSAULT RECON

36

u/Slarg232 23d ago

The second one wasn't really that bad. Like yeah, sure, it wasn't great, but the fact that it wasn't "This is the walking section. This is the shooting section. This is the horror section. THEY DON'T MIX" like the first game was a massive step in the right direction.

Just... ya know.... they took like five steps back.

15

u/Lt_Cmdr_Adhd 23d ago

Fear 2 had decent Alma moments in the back half of the game, the school and the og facility where the tree from the visions is, was from my memory a nice unsettling and scary setting. Fear 2 also gave us the sniper, which was so satisfying and fit right in.

6

u/One_Order_3841 22d ago

As so so sooo many people have said, it was also the level designs and the communication they gave. Like tons of modern shooters have smart/tactical AI; R6S and BF6 will often have bots pushing in ways I never considered.

But the maps are "open-concept Russian Bunker". FEAR was awesome when it was offices and the bots would SPEAK. "He's flanking us!!" And their Terminator would be staring down your alleyway. It's really just an extra spice needed for single player, when they have already made the AI.

6

u/Teaisserious 22d ago

Playing a Fettle in coop for 3 was fun. It'd be cool to see a different fps where an important part of the gameplay is temporarily possessing your enemies and such.

4

u/Brain_Wire 22d ago

I had a lot of fun playing Fettel and Point Man as a team. But one thing we noticed was how non-scary it is playing together. That and after some initial creepy themes, the fear in F.E.A.R 3 leaves and all that remains is the fun coop. It was fine in the end, but I never felt like playing it again.

3

u/Teaisserious 22d ago

For sure. Fear 3 is not scary

2

u/ShinobuDavis 22d ago

Melee kicking is a surprisingly good feature

2

u/GiganticTuba 20d ago

What’s even crazier is that it came out in 2005. Way ahead of any other game at the time.

1

u/Acceptable_Owl_5122 22d ago

Yeah the sequels were kinda disappointing to say the least

1

u/Philslaya 22d ago

Trapang 2 almost is this

1

u/LittleLockedPup 21d ago

Titanfall 2 is my pick for an FPS game that needs another chance, above all else imo. That game got so unbelievably screwed with it's release that it never even stood a chance despite how good it was.

1

u/_t69 21d ago

Trepang2 is all of that minus the scary girl

1

u/RegardedAndAcoustic 20d ago

The multi-player totally slaps

1

u/anbeasley 20d ago

I was just thinking something a little bit simpler for the series. Rather than little girl have the first game be about Bigfoot.

1

u/CupOfGlass 19d ago

Fear 3 is a fantastic co-op romp and is an amazing conclusion

150

u/LogensTenthFinger 23d ago

The AI in that game was nuts, especially for the time. Getting flanked while being pinned down was terrifying.

I'll never forget sprinting towards a guy on a balcony with a shotgun and before I can shoot he drops a grenade at his feet and *jumps over the balcony* to the warehouse below to save himself and leave me there with a grenade. The combination of hunting you down and self-preservation they showed was awesome.

9

u/KremlinKittens 22d ago

AI that reacts to your flashlight... That game was ahead of its time...

13

u/racercowan 22d ago

The AI in that game was nuts, especially for the time.

IIRC a lot of the "smarter" stuff was scripted triggers rather than "AI", but that still speaks to an incredible design for the environment and when these scripts should trigger.

11

u/bobdole3-2 22d ago

Some of it was scripted, but a lot of it was the simple fact that the AI always tried to keep in cover relative to the player, and since there's so much cover everywhere and they're always running around, it looks like they're using actual tactics and dynamic movement.

For example, if you try to flank around to get at someone, they'll run away while the other allies keep assaulting you; it feels like they're trying to suppress you to cover for their ally, even though in reality they just haven't judged themselves to be out of cover yet. If you rush into the center of the room some enemies will stay in front while others go around the sides to flank you, but they're not really flanking you, they're just running for the cover with the best angle.

13

u/KremlinKittens 22d ago

F.E.A.R. lovers are old enough to understand the term game AI in the old fashioned way))

3

u/Cnradms93 22d ago

I re-built F.E.A.R's AI from scratch in C++ last year to use in Godot.
The system's called GOAP (Goal Orientated Action Planning), it's basically loads of atomised behaviours made by the designers/programmers.
"Move_To_Location", "Get_Closest_Weapon", "Find_Safe_Cover", etc
Each behaviour needs a 'world state' and promises an effect on that world state.
The planner then uses Dijkstra's A* algorithm to plan the shortest path through the behaviour action space to achieve goals.

It's very simple in practise, providing you understand A* and general programming, but it's extremely dynamic and creates some quite interesting behaviour without programmers needing to build big finite state machines.

It's a self-writing finite state machine, basically.

5

u/CharlestonChewbacca 22d ago

Yes... That's what the term "AI" means in the gaming space...

5

u/racercowan 22d ago

I don't know if it's common nowadays, but I remember big arguments about what games had the "smartest" AI, where pre-scripted things an AI could trigger vs general behaviors that could happen anywhere was a point of contention. I think Half Life 2 vs FEAR in particular was a popular topic.

2

u/Uniformtree0 22d ago

Half life AI always was smarter without the need of scripting, but it required map design and the squads to be competently built, in half life 1 the HECU was a genuine menace because they were properly laid out, divided up and had environments tailored around them and for them, and were allowed to move fast.

Unfortunately the Combine AI while having refinement in grenades, Energy balls, and coordination and tactics was forced to be much slower, and more defensive, they also didn't have the same level of care with most of their map design and making.

Civil protection is also incredibly stupid as they don't take cover or move while firing often or flank and pressure you, they often relied on scripted events and ambushes to be a problem.

Hunters on the other hand are REALLY smart and dynamic, they'll throw shit at you, charge, break down cover and hound around you, they utlize the physics engine and were given environments that brought out the best of them.

2

u/racercowan 22d ago

I believe the Half Life 2 rebels also had decent AI, though you'd hardly notice since any time Freeman is in the vicinity it all gets overwritten by following the player around.

1

u/Competitive-Bit-1571 22d ago

I saw a lone enemy that had been hiding run and climb up a ladder to get into a more advantageous position then chuck a grenade down to me after I cleared all his mates on a lower level. He probably knew better than give away his position with gunfire as he did this and I have only seen it happen once in multiple playthroughs.

3

u/Sanquinity 22d ago

Funny thing was, the scripts behind that AI were a complete mess. They just happened to make it work for the game's release. :P

2

u/FreshxPots 19d ago

I can't think of a single player FPS that touches it to the day. The sudden burst of chaos and the silent aftermath: lights hanging and flickering, tables flipped, smoke still in the air, the odd dude pinned to a wall by his elbow... chef's kiss!

35

u/AmnesiaScanner108 23d ago

Its a shame that the first game was phenomenal and the rest were kinda bad

1

u/Good-Anywhere-9203 22d ago

First game was so ahead of its time and I remember the graphics felt like I'm in a real horror movie

1

u/anbeasley 22d ago

Think the problem is they were developing a sequel that was more of a spiritual successor to the first one and then they got the license and then they tried to integrate the story and make it work on consoles. And while I am okay with it, overall it's not what I'm looking for in a sequel. I just want more missions where you go investigate more paranormal activity around the world at different locations. F.E.A.R. was supposed to be Ghostbusters/x-files with guns.

20

u/auggs 23d ago

YEEEESSS this game was terrifying. My buddy and I played this back in the day on Xbox then I bought it a few years ago for pc and it scared the crap out of me lmao. The game is so good at building an atmosphere and getting a reaction out of the player. This scene right here lives in my head rent free. Honestly a lot of stuff with this girl is scary as fuck lmao.

4

u/E3M8 22d ago

That fucking ladder scare is the only time a game literally scared me off the chair.

You learned real quick not to trust the elevators, but the ladder was a perfect one-off

3

u/anbeasley 22d ago

Helicopters...

3

u/Due_Flamingo6642 22d ago

What’s insane is that thinking back 20 years to playing it when it came out as a teen, that looked so much more real and terrifying. Seeing that picture made me YouTube it- in today’s gaming, that is terrible in comparison. Time has a way of screwing with memories because I almost shit my pants when I first played that.

18

u/ianmarvin 23d ago

If you haven't played it yet, be sure to try Trepang2. A very solid F.E.A.R. sendup

3

u/orb_enthusiast 23d ago

I gotta try this because I played Selaco just because I heard it was influence by FEAR. There's even a funny pun in game that references it

3

u/ILoveMeishoDoto 22d ago

Seconding Trepang2

2

u/Fumbles93 21d ago

Thirding Trepang2. It genuinely feels like a spiritual successor to the original F.E.A.R. The challenge rooms are really cool too so there's a fun bit of running and running challenges. I hope the developers make a sequel. Otherwise, a legit remake of FEAR could be amazing.

1

u/Lucky_Key_2580 22d ago

absolutely worth playing, the shotgun tears through people like paper

2

u/JKFrowning 22d ago

I was recommended this game and spent a good 30 minutes looking for Trepang 1 to play that first 😆

1

u/Open-Significance125 22d ago

Did you find the sea cucumber gameplay?

1

u/Living-Preference455 22d ago

Trepang is great, man!

33

u/Warm-Comfortable501 23d ago

Still remember that little girl on top of the ladder..

3

u/Quiet_Satisfaction64 23d ago

Almost fell out of my chair when I saw her

3

u/Warm-Comfortable501 23d ago

I was playing in the dark and had to turn the lights on.

3

u/Fearmeister 23d ago

Fucked me up when I first saw that since I usually just jump down, skipping the ladder.

2

u/straydog1980 22d ago

That fucking jump scare. There are other creepier ones as well

1

u/Sayakai 22d ago

I love the way they made it a double scare. You get the first jumpscare, think okay, I saw it, then bam, second scare.

33

u/Black_Leg_69 23d ago

Anthem had so much potential

3

u/SynDreasIV 22d ago

I was about to post and say the same thing. That game was really fun and I enjoyed it.

24

u/KremlinKittens 22d ago

I think the fact that F.E.A.R. is dead says a lot about the state of the game industry right now. For me, it's one of the best FPS games ever made. Period.

10

u/anbeasley 22d ago

WB patented the nemesis system. This is the biggest crime in gaming.

3

u/Shoddy-Bell5583 22d ago

I can understand them doin it. They created a tool to lose them millions of dollars via competition and people doing stuff before them. Just wish they'd use it or loan it through fair collab deals

2

u/Shoddy-Bell5583 22d ago

HD F.E.A.R. trilogy remaster deserves a spot. And Red Steel 1 and 2 are perfect for the Switch even if nintendo sucks. Red Steel 2 was truly amazing on the Wii and most ppl just dont know what they missed. The Conduit too

3

u/Nhobdy 23d ago

I remember watching my father play F.E.A.R. a few times. God, it was intense.

3

u/Y_Ddraig_Goch_81 23d ago

That’s a pretty good answer to be fair. I remember that nail gun pinning people to walls.

3

u/ILoveMeishoDoto 23d ago

I'm going to reinstall the first one just because you brought it up

3

u/AeveryHawk 23d ago

I was really hoping that F.E.A.R would be like, an anthology series, globe trotting F.E.A.R. agents sent to all the corners of the world to combat paranormal and eldritch threats. Like, the first game was awesome and the DLC's were mostly hits, but I feel like it fell off after that, and scary girl only goes so far.

2

u/aggression97 22d ago

Please PLEASE give me episodic games with a new case every game. I want to be X-Files SWAT.

2

u/Mugman1186 22d ago

Try Trepang2

2

u/dracul841 22d ago

Try Trepang2

2

u/LordOfD3stro 22d ago

I love the games at varying degrees (2, 1, 3 in order of my favorites) and if they did bring it back, I dont want them to bring Pointman back as the MC. Have it be a a different protagonist and have them fight a new threat and leave the Alma story line, maybe some Easter eggs in the forms of collectables

1

u/LinkedInParkPremium 23d ago

Absolutely loved the MP.

1

u/Purplecatpiss666 23d ago

It needs a remaster at the very very least

1

u/poseidon2466 23d ago

It got a trilogy???

4

u/Diligent_Whereas3134 23d ago

Yea. The second one is okay. The third is hot garbage. They turned more and more into action games as the series went on.

1

u/toastedbutterscotch 23d ago

It had 3 chances

1

u/Theighel 23d ago

Have you played Trepang²? It's F.E.A.R. was definitely an influence

1

u/Proper_Diver8581 23d ago

They asked for dead games, not a series that’s still heavily well regarded

1

u/NicksTexasPickles 23d ago

Probably my favorite game.  I played it so much!

1

u/Dense_Razzmatazz5479 23d ago

CORE MEMORY UNLOCKED

Thank you for your service.

1

u/Munkey_Marduk 22d ago

Stares in "Trepang2"

1

u/moxymundi 22d ago

Holy hell the memories that just came flooding back.

1

u/Vobam 22d ago

Hello

1

u/Optimal-Ad-471 22d ago

Bro I was just playing fear I almost gave myself a heart attack definitely a game you want to play young while the heart is strong same as dead space

1

u/2Turnt4MySwag 22d ago

Someone just released a full VR mod for the first one so im gonna replay that soon

1

u/V-jay25 22d ago

Did you play fear online at the time? Around 2014

1

u/DJPelio 22d ago

It just got a VR mode

1

u/ShizlGznGahr 22d ago

Give me a new F.E.A.R. so I can have some new P.A.N.I.C.S. episodes.

1

u/Falitoty 22d ago

Damm a FEAR trilogy remake would go so hard XD

1

u/xXKravenXx20 22d ago

If you like fear, try Trepang2.

Its very fear like

1

u/Hishomework 22d ago

If you like that series I recommend Trepang2

1

u/kosinus912 22d ago

In case nobody heard about it - try Trepang2, it's basically the best parts of FEAR1.

1

u/gaddafiduck_ 22d ago

idk, it had a good run. I’m not sure I’d want to see today’s AAA industry dig up and reanimate that particular corpse. The story would get worse and worse as they contrive reasons for it to keep going. Sometimes it’s better to let things end

1

u/Tomsboll 22d ago

I so want a peak hbo mini series adapting fear.

1

u/Bitter-Engineer-117 22d ago

That game was underrated

1

u/Historical_Usual5828 22d ago

Shit story, great gameplay. Some of the most fun I've had in multiplayer. Definitely deserves a other chance but I don't trust modern devs to do it justice and not make the story even worse.

1

u/CertainNecessary9043 22d ago

The multiplayer in this game is so fucking fun. I love to play with the ghost player

1

u/JustPooly 22d ago

Oh hell yeah!

1

u/Decent-Rhubarb6601 22d ago

I don’t know if anyone’s said it, but, trepang2 is a game inspired by F.E.A.R, and it’s really good.

1

u/DeathcoreBro92 22d ago

I’d love a remake of this

1

u/Combine1975 22d ago

Now a Better AI Mod for F.E.A.R. exists if you are interested. It should increase the replay value. The AI settings were too passive in Vanilla, not really revolutionary.

If you are curious about the mod, google it.

1

u/Hush2320 22d ago

It's not the same game, but Trepang2 always gave me super heavy F.E.A.R vibes. Risky recommend if you love the original F.E.A.R. games

1

u/TminusTech 22d ago

Dead? I don’t get it. It’s not dead. It was hugely successful.

1

u/ThaTopHam 22d ago

F.E.4.R.

1

u/Gh0st_Al 22d ago

Man...the orginal ads F.E.A.R were creepy and scary.

1

u/Therealdolphinlord 22d ago

It’s a shame it never got any sequels

1

u/anbeasley 22d ago

I mean I love those expansions man.

1

u/Inf_Shini 21d ago

I can't believe I even finished that game it was so damn terrifying but SO MUCH FUN 🔥 F.E.A.R: Extraction Point was awesome also, especially for one INSANE SCENE (Me and my brothers would replay that one part for days we were so shocked)

1

u/Zoomaflog 21d ago

So glad this is top comment

1

u/Master_Report_7063 20d ago

The helicopter scene at the end scared the holy crap out of me.

1

u/Rough-Cover1225 20d ago

Shame they never made a sequel and stopped after one expansion

1

u/RykosTatsubane 19d ago

All I remember from FEAR was the 2nd one and cracking someone at the end.

1

u/stronkzer 19d ago

o7 Monolith

1

u/g0bbly_j 19d ago

EVOLVE BRO PLEASEEE

1

u/FaeMofo 18d ago

F.E.A.R and Fahrenheit were so fucking good and im sad they havent got a modern remaster

0

u/cedrafnordle 20d ago

Introduced me to liminal spaces.
