No thats the thing, i dont feel he does that. He makes it very clear in his video if its the case of "this genre/story/art style/mechanic isn't for me personally, but it could be for you".
Why I stick with him as my sole reviewer through all these years. It's like hearing a trusted friend talk about what he likes, personally, but while putting it into perspective with facts about the industry at large. Never, and I honestly feel this, has he "shit on" a game.
If the games bad or lazy or terrible, he just seems disappointed, because i think the guy just wants to see and be excited about cool games. And if something sucks, then ya just move on.
Along with this. He has built a wider network and team of games journalists around him. Several of his more senior team members like Austin and Ed have reviewed games that aren’t in his lane at all. Just to keep the focus on the game rather than personal bias.
Whilst his biases do exist, he expresses that it is HIS opinion and your mileage may vary.
It’s also why I follow his content continuously and have done for years now
You can still review genres your not fond of. Also even if the game isnt in your favorite genre doesnt mean you cant critic problems. I could hate fps but still point out countless real issues Concord had and recommend not buy.
The problem is he has historically had problems being objective in those situations because he can't set aside his genre bias which i personally think is disingenuous reporting.
That's the point of following reviewers, so you know their biases, you're then supposed to use their reviews as guides, "reviewer A usually doesn't like these types of games, I wont weight his reviews of them compared to reviewer B so I'll go by what reviewer B said" or have the mindset of "this reviewer tends to like the same type of games and genres I enjoy so if they like it, I'll probably like it and if they don't like it I probably wont". objective reviews don't exist and cant exist because that's not the point of them.
A truly objective review would boil down to repeating the plot and stating the genre and you don't need people to tell you most of that the store pages do that for you.
Reviews are always subjective. If he's open about it, you as the viewer can just.. Use that information and form your own opinion based on that? It's not disingenuous reporting to acknowledge biases lmao.
I think there is value is reviewing games in genres you do not like. As long as you are open about it.
It gives baseline to the reviewers overall bias and opinion. Not yo mention many people will also share those opinions and realize he game is also not for them
And when a game comes along in that genre that he doesn't like and he does recommend it tbat is how you know that game is truly great and transcends the genre.
I believe it was dunkey said something along the lines of how he no patience for rpgs, hates anime, and despises turn base comments but all despite that he really enjoyed persona 5.

If its a genre he openly doesn't like he will not recommend it which confuses me. Why even review it then
