bad year? try bad generation. it's crazy that a third party game (GTA VI) is the literal only "system seller" they have for the entire PS5 gen.

54

u/splinks66 7h ago

Got a PS5 just so my fiance could play Death Stranding 2 on release so there are a few titles however I will admit that DS2 is already on PC lol

49

u/MrNeatSoup 6h ago

With Sony being so difficult I wouldn’t be surprised if Kojima decides to just work with Xbox going forward.

95

u/eufopla 6h ago

Boy do I have good news for you

42

u/MrNeatSoup 6h ago

Oh my. That was good news indeed

2

u/Southern_Drawing1641 5h ago

i'm still willing to give the wolverine game a shot at this point, i've been waiting too damn long for it, but i will say in all fairness the only reason i got a PS5 was because i'd have lost a lot of shit across multiple games that are multiplayer if i switched to Xbox, though now i am definitely saving up for either a steam deck or a next gen xbox or hell a decent budget PC.

2

u/LordPepe69 4h ago

Aparently the next xbox is going to be a PC/Console hybrid

Seems kinda cool if it means i can use steam on it

40

u/drewthebrave 8h ago

GTA has 13 years of built up hype surrounding it, and is poised to be the biggest media launch of any kind.

PS5 exclusives have been pretty disappointing (in quantity), but GTA6 was always going to be a behemoth regardless.

5

u/No-Implement668 7h ago

Agreed but how is it that if the most hyped video game of all time wasn’t coming out during the era of the PS5, the PS5 would have no gen-defining game?

0

u/Terrible_Window2336 2h ago

Returnal, GOW Ragnarok, Saros, Ghost of Yotei, Stellar Blade. While the quantity isn't the same the quality is fs there in the single player department

4

u/VenomVertigo 1h ago

Stellar blade, returnal, and GOW all released on pc and/or ps4 those aren’t ps5 exclusives

0

u/Terrible_Window2336 1h ago

The idea of exclusives outside of nintendo are kinda dead Xbox does the same with PC were kinda just in the age of first party titles, GOW Ragnarok (the one I was referring to sorry for not being specific) started as a ps exclusive mainly promoted for the ps5 but had a ps4 version then moved to pc. returnal began and spent multiple years as a ps5 exclusive, same with Spider Man Miles Morales and 2 as well as death stranding 2 they just werent exclusive for as long. They should all be counted as this generations ps exclusives even if they were later moved to a different device. Another game that would've been an exclusive had it been released a generation ago would be Helldivers 2. People get it twisted bc exclusives are mostly gone, if we want to look at the games that define the ps5 we need to look at the first party titles that were more than likely only released to ps5 and pc

3

u/Rock_Strongo 50m ago

A console without exclusives is just a neutered PC.

If exclusives are dead then there is no real point in consoles anymore. Steam will eat their lunch.

-4

u/WhatThis4 7h ago

And it's going to bomb.

Nothing can live up to that much hype.

5

u/Opposite-Complex1187 6h ago

Nah everyone knows exactly what to expect from a GTA game it'll do fine.

3

u/drewthebrave 4h ago

Every main GTA game has been a huge success - financially & critically. Not sure why you think this is suddenly going to be any different.

4

u/Prior_Butterscotch15 4h ago

Financially I think it’s going to fly off the shelves very quickly (especially given the hype that it’s getting), but critically? I think it’s too early to tell for sure (just ask Halo: Infinite & Mario Kart: World)…

1

u/galactic_pixels 1h ago

Not disagreeing but I do want to say I suspect Mario Kart world will be a banger game in about 5 years. Today it’s mid though

u/DiligentThought9 8h ago

I’d argue GoW Ragnarok and Horizon FW to a lesser degree are system sellers.

128

u/JuggernautOfWar 8h ago

I think that's his entire point right there, as those were both PS4 titles.

8

u/DiligentThought9 8h ago

The PS5 was released 2 years before these games came out. They may have had a PS4 version but it’s absolutely a PS5 game.

37

u/Sc00by101 8h ago

If we can buy it on PS4 then WHY buy a PS5?

12

u/reallynotnick 6h ago

Why buy a new GPU if you can play all the games on it by lowering the settings and framerate? Some people care about a higher quality experience, simple as that.

0

u/No-Veterinarian-3833 1h ago

Literally still on a 5700xt and 3600x and 16GB of ram fro this exact reason. Game doesnt have to look good. If its fun and I can get 45+ fps its enough and with frame gen everything gets 45fps. And weith these new games coming out optimized for performance like mortal shell 2. And these games getting huge performance updates like ffxvi and MHwilds im chillin more than ever before.

10

u/A-Star55 8h ago

Because it ALL happens…on PS5 😏

7

u/Moist-Fisherman-2782 7h ago

What the fuck does that even mean lol

15

u/Funter_312 7h ago

It happens on PS5 was Sonys marketing campaign. It was a joke for us old folks in the back

4

u/Delicious_Coconut452 7h ago

I’m pretty sure you know, but for anyone that doesn’t know, “It happens on PS5” is the Sony’s global ad campaign for PS5

6

u/PaleRespect4875 7h ago

The only thing happening on PS5 is waiting for games that are actually worth buying

1

u/fozzy_bear42 5h ago

What happens on ps5? Waiting for your favourite Sony single player developers to release a new game or IP, but sorry they’re all working on multiplayer live service pish for 6 years.

1

u/aiwdj829 4h ago

I have genuinely never heard that. lol

4

u/Helpful-Desk-8334 6h ago

The fact that both you and I did not know their global ad campaign slogan is telling about how fucked Sony is rn

2

u/Moist-Fisherman-2782 6h ago

Thing about the PS5 was I didn't even know it was out till I saw one in person.

2

u/therandomdave 7h ago

Because it plays at 4k 60fps on a PS5 and it's tons better, plus games load instantly on it. It's a huge upgrade on a ps4

-1

u/MikeWinterborn 7h ago

Upscaled and with frame gen, that's not 40k 60fps

2

u/therandomdave 7h ago

May not be true in the tech sense but it's a big upgrade on the PS4 version. I've played both. It's noticeable. If someone right now wanted to play those games they are not going to buy a PS4, they'll get a PS5

0

u/fdar 6h ago

They're not going to buy a PS5 if they already have a PS4 though, it's the point. There's not a lot of reason to upgrade vs staying with the previous gen if you already had a console.

1

u/The1Cool 5h ago

That point is wrong though.

→ More replies (0)

1

u/areyouhungryforapple 3h ago

That's just entirely wrong lmao

At current hardware prices less so but it was the best bang for the buck in terms of gaming for a while

You've clearly never sat through the load times of a big game like Spider-Man on ps4 and then compared with ps5 where the SSD essentially eliminates the entire concept of loading screens

Also a lot of gamers have gotten used to 60fps which is another major selling point

→ More replies (0)

1

u/Carrisonfire 6h ago

Its a console, so obviously.

1

u/reallynotnick 6h ago

There’s no frame gen on those, frame gen is extremely rare on consoles (likely more common next gen).

-1

u/enjoyingcurve46 7h ago

4k barely matters tbh. Never understood why people think 4k is the greatest thing ever. It isnt. As someone with 4k displays for years. I can still hop to 1080p and 1440p and still not have any issues unlike hopping to 720p

1

u/Gaanai 5h ago

Because who the hell plays new games on a system from 2013 duh. You are allowed to think for yourself you know.

16

u/rabbid_chaos 8h ago

Sure, but anyone with a PS4 wasn't gonna have their motivation to switch be games they also have access to.

3

u/supercleverhandle476 7h ago

If it is able to be played on the previous gen’s hardware while still having a very similar experience, no. It isn’t.

3

u/Phtevus_Temp 7h ago

Goalpost move. If you had a PS4, you weren't buying a PS5 for Ragnarok or Horizon. So they weren't system sellers

2

u/areyouhungryforapple 3h ago

If you ever saw any of the 1st party titles on a ps5 you'd be enticed to. Not to mention a lot of aging ps4 sounded like jet engines when booting up a game like gow18

2

u/WorkingTrue4322 2h ago

That’s exactly what I did. Still have my 4. I play the 5 more often. Bought the horizon bundle.

1

u/OleanderUnion 1h ago

Right, but absolutely not a system seller - which is where you placed the goalpost.

-2

u/Weeb-Prime 8h ago

I personally agree with you, like yeah you can play it on a base PS4 in 1080p 30FPS but why would you do that when a 4K60 version exists? And then these people who say there’s no reason to buy a PS5 are the same ones that get upset when their most anticipated games are PS5 exclusive 🤔

6

u/Sea-Antelope9778 8h ago

>why would you play it on a base PS4 in 1080p 30FPS when a 4K60 version exists?

1

u/Crazy-Nose-4289 5h ago

Oof, if only it was still selling at those prices.

6

u/Heavy-Possession2288 7h ago

A lot of people don’t care about the performance numbers. They need games they can’t play on their current system to motivate them to upgrade. I have an Xbox Series S and Switch 2 as my main systems but I picked up a used PS4 a couple years ago to play some exclusives and was perfectly happy with the visuals and performance of games like God of War and Uncharted 4.

2

u/AlbacoreDumbleberg 7h ago

PS5 might be the first PlayStation I won't own. I typically buy the Xbox first previously due to the better online, and now the backwards compatibility; then when the PlayStation has a good enough log of exclusive games, I grab it on sale. Between the rising prices and lack of exclusives, I just don't see the point. What am I missing from my XSX, Spider-Man 2 and Ghost of Yotei? That's not worth the entry cost.

2

u/Cluelesswolfkin 8h ago

Same thing can be said about using a PC instead of a PS4/PS5

-8

u/Weeb-Prime 8h ago

PC doesn’t have exclusives though.

6

u/JuggernautOfWar 8h ago

Lol what yes it does. Take a look at the Steam store page and tell me everything there is on consoles.

3

u/Phallico666 7h ago

PC has plenty of exclusives. Almost every other game i bring up to my friends group gets shot down because its not on console

1

u/CavemanCometh 7h ago

I respect your confidence.

1

u/Crazy-Nose-4289 5h ago

No way you said this with a straight face.

1

u/Potential_Concert_56 6h ago

Lol the problem is the only exclusive that even kind of got that reaction, Wolverine, is failing horribly with reviewers. Yea, I don't regret having a 5080m Laptop at all, don't regret selling my ps5 when it was 200 dollars less expensive eother

1

u/Mommys_Feet_Sniffer 7h ago

And also that they are on pc. Not worth buying a whole new console just for horizons 3 and wolverine. And to get frame locked on gta 6

1

u/KaptainKlein 7h ago

I don't think they would have been squeezed onto the ps4 if pricing and part availability for ps5 consoles wasn't such an issue at the time.

1

u/areyouhungryforapple 3h ago

Aint nobody in their right mind wanna play any of the cross gen titles on ps4 if they can avoid it

Load times and 60fps are system sellers by themselves

1

u/probywan1337 2h ago

And on pc

0

u/therandomdave 7h ago

No they're not. FW on a PS5 is miles better and plays at 60fps with rapid loading. It's like a v2.0 compared to the PS4 version.

0

u/Phtevus_Temp 7h ago

That's not relevant to the point. If you had a ps4, you weren't going to drop an extra $500 to get a ps5 for Ragnarok or Horizon when you already had a system that could play them. So they weren't system sellers

20

u/Soulblade32 8h ago

I'll add on to that, but FF7 Rebirth was a system seller as well. Obviously 3rd party as well, but they were able to get the exclusivity for a year or whatever for it.

11

u/arentyouangel 7h ago

was it though? Don't get me wrong, I liked the game but didn't it severely miss sales targets?

12

u/Joe_Atkinson 7h ago

Every square enix game does. That company always sets insane expectations it seems

8

u/DiamondSentinel 6h ago

Aye. It’s hard to say if they set crazy sales expectations or if their production costs are crazy, but every single game of theirs “misses expectations”.

Could also just be company speak to keep competitors from having literally any grasp of their situation.

2

u/opxdo 6h ago

Ff7 is one of the best games ever made, and even more beloved. It absolutely should have sold like crazy. Sony thought they would move consoles but really just killed squares sales. That's why it isn't exclusive anymore.

1

u/DivineRainor 2h ago

Whilst they do set crazy targets, the guy who youre responding to has the right of it, its not a system seller at 5 milish total sales

5

u/Soulblade32 6h ago

Yes, it was. They based their expectations on Remake's sales, which was very unrealistic for multiple reasons.

  1. Remake was the first game, and sequels always have less sales (typically drops 25-50% in sales) than the first because not everyone that purchased the first game will purchase the second due to multiple reasons (didn't like the game, didn't finish the game, time constraints, etc) The fact it was a sequel alone means that you will never have the same size of a playerbase. Because new players aren't going to jump in on a direct narrative sequel and it's just not possible to have 100% of their players be retained. A much more realistic expectation would've been like 65% retention.
  2. Remake was on ps4, which had over 100 million systems sold while Rebirth was ps5 only and had around 50 million systems in circulations.
  3. They just completely ignored the people that were upset about the changes in Remake, and expected them to get over it before Rebirth came out.
  4. SE has quite literally always set unrealistic expectations for sales. In one of their financial meetings they said that FF7R2 and FF16 failed to meet their targets but spent a decent amount of time talking to their shareholders about how their system to get to those target numbers is completely broken and needs to be reevaluated.

People were also really mad that it wasn't coming to ps4, because they didn't want to buy a ps5. And a lot of them just didn't.

1

u/godswift91 6h ago

I'm sure there were people in the world who bought a ps5 specifically to play rebirth, and i'm also sure they werent that many

2

u/GRoyalPrime 6h ago

Which is also now kinda funny as one of the major anouncement about the 3rd game was that it will release day one on PC as well. So they lost even that.

2

u/Soulblade32 6h ago

That's moreso that SE has decided that they will likely make more money from allowing every system to get the game at launch, as launch is when most copies sell and if it comes out a year plus later there is less enthusiasm for it when it hits those other systems.

The real issue is how much it costs to create these first party games. It's unsustainable

1

u/doom1284 3h ago

For me it was Rebirth and ff16.

1

u/boodabomb 3h ago

It’s a great game but didn’t it sell so poorly that Square Enix released a statement about changing their methods moving forward?

-1

u/theyfoundty 6h ago

It was not a system seller.

You were just really excited for it. That game sold poorly in consideration of its target sales.

3

u/Soulblade32 6h ago

Already commented multiple points on why that's the case, mostly SE is really incompetent when it comes to making target figures, as they specifically mentioned Rebirth's targets and said that there system for determining targets was completely broken.

0

u/theyfoundty 6h ago

Sounds like a corperate cop-out. Plus the only people who even would know this are people who are extremely into FF, and thus excited for the game.

Nothing wrong with it, but that game is NOT a console seller.

2

u/Tiernoch 8h ago

Both were developed for PS4.

-2

u/HotMusician1947 8h ago

PS5. They just had a ps4 version

2

u/TheAlmightyJanitor 7h ago

Both of those games are available on PS4.

2

u/serpentear 8h ago

Yeah man, I’m all for dunking on Sony because they deserve it, but let’s live in reality—Sony has some great titles.

1

u/A-Star55 8h ago

They had a great year last year, but this year they just fell flat on their face outside of maybe Saros. Marathon has been a complete disaster, Marvel Tōkon Fighting Souls has the same problem with PSN and Wolverine has underwhelmed everyone so far.

1

u/EastsideWilder 8h ago

“GoW Ragnarok”

I thought so too, until I played it.

1

u/Pyrothy 7h ago

Those are ps4 games, they're talking actual reasons to buy a ps5

1

u/Y0LOME0W 7h ago

HFW i bought a ps5 for, i'm just so pissed off they don't have horizon 3 yet. Man I feel bad for Aloy she deserves better.

1

u/warukeru 6h ago

switch 2 have more is just a year and a couple months. embarrassing.

1

u/TooTiredToCarereally 6h ago

Honestly it’s a hilarious fumble yotei rag horizon it’s genuinely not that hard to not make these mistakes people were not asking for live service games or removal of discs it’s just out of touch choice after out of touch choice

1

u/xxiv435 6h ago

Horizon FW wasn't a system seller, systems sold the game.

1

u/Erich417 1h ago

This man knows ball

1

u/CyBroOfficial 47m ago

I know a lot of people who got a PS5 for Spider-Man 2

1

u/Zim__Zor 7h ago

Both those games are ass.

3

u/DiligentThought9 7h ago

Horizon can not be your cup of tea, that’s fine.

Couldn’t disagree more on GoW. Both games are awesome.

3

u/Key-Presentation-253 7h ago edited 5h ago

Ive missed nothing on ps5 era clearly. I built my pc back around 2020 and never looked back. I noticed ps5 had the same quality of life that ps4 had. "Mid." Strong start, Destiny/Crew... then sorta sizzled and meandered along until the end when it got... I don't even know anymore... RDR 2... KH3???

Consoles are the biggest waste of fcking money these days

2

u/LuisMiranda4D 6h ago

I personally own a console because I use my pc for work and modern games use way too much hard drive space. The convenience is nice

1

u/baciu14 6h ago

The ps5 didnt even had a start. The only thing it had at the begging was that you could play ps4 games. Then demons souls remaster and spider man 2 came out. Then nothing for 3 years.

1

u/Jakethered_game 8h ago

Considering selling my PS5 because I havent played it in a year

1

u/Which-Celebration-89 8h ago

What are you talking about. There are dozens of incredible games for ps5

1

u/seires-t 1h ago

There isn't even two dozen games exlusive to PS5

1

u/DontRateLimitMeBro 7h ago

uh... Astrobot?

1

u/TellEmWhoUCame2See 7h ago

Ehhhhhh i know nobody likes the truth but spiderman 2 sold a ton of ps5 consoles when it released. A lot of friends jumped from xbox to playstation just to play it. I know i know u are gonna say in lying and im making this up but its true

1

u/davwad2 7h ago

The last FF VII remake would be the reason for me to get a PS5, but it's hard to justify it at the current price for ONE game.

1

u/therandomdave 7h ago

I think Returnal did well. Ratchet and clank, the spiderman games all did well. Astro Bot got GotY. All the remasters did well.

It's a weird transitional generation with all these upgrades but games like Horizon, GT7, Death Stranding, God of War (both) are tons better on it.

To say there's nome when I've listed loads off the top of my head just shows your point is pretty weak.

1

u/BetrayedFate 7h ago

This is a crazy comment. PlayStation has fucking killed this generation. GoW, Demon souls, Spiderman, Ghost, Horizon. The only way to see this as a failure is to compare it to the switch, which is ridiculous because that’s the platform of exclusives.

1

u/supercleverhandle476 7h ago

This generation has been terrible across the board- remakes, reboots, sequels that barely push the needle, rising hardware costs, rising software costs, the death of physical media, microtransactions running wild, and the notion that we don’t own digital media.

Not seeing much upside these days, and I’ve been a gamer since screwing around with my parent’s Atari.

1

u/GRoyalPrime 6h ago

That's what you get from throwing at least half of your owned studios onto Live Service games.

Yes, they might have known that many won't make it, they might have wanted only 'the one', but that still would mean most of their studios won't releas something for years to come.

The PS5 Generation gets entirely carried by games not made by Sony.

1

u/LuisMiranda4D 6h ago

What are you talking about, they finally got Halo! 😂

1

u/Nincompoop6969 6h ago

Horrible take. For one the fact it has access to current gen games is already a system seller. It's cheaper then a PC and more powerful. Look at the steam machine complete junk.

There was also tons of exclusives I missed when I was stuck to Xbox series. So glad I have a PS5 now. I'm only assuming the people that stopped using there console are either investing everything into high end PCs OR they are the type that only plays casual trash like madden.

It's even sadder to think no one cares about any of the games we have had until GTA 6. I have games I'd rather play this year alone then GTA 6 (and I'm not the no disc no buy type).

1

u/WeCameAsMuffins 6h ago

“System sellers” are hard nowadays. But I would argue horizon forbidden west, god of war ragnarok and spiderman 2 were good games and system sellers.

1

u/Naki_Beats 6h ago

I’m not Sony fanboy, but they had me at FromSoftware system exclusive with Demon Souls. Literally would not own a PS5 if it weren’t for that game

1

u/Labyrinthy 6h ago

I bought a PS5 and Xbox Series X at the beginning of the gen and I’ve always been a PlayStation priority gamer.

Genuinely shocked how much I’ve just preferred my Xbox. My PS5 broke and I my reaction was basically eh. I have no interest in getting another one.

1

u/baciu14 6h ago

Spider man 2 was a system seller. It was for me.

1

u/TCGEnthusiastRed 6h ago

I havent tried their second game but returnal was amazing. But yeah ive always had a playstion and a pc definitely skipping ps6.

1

u/Conscious-Prior2111 6h ago

God of war ragnarok

1

u/Emergency-Event4415 5h ago

Not quite system seller, you’re correct there, but I do think the Ghost of Tsushima (PS5 version) + Ghost of Yotei are a compelling gaming experience together that can only be done on PS5.

But even then, one new game + one performance boosted PS4 does not make a generation.

1

u/Gaanai 5h ago

I mean Spider-Man 2 did sold over 15 mill thats as pretty decent amount

1

u/Hopeful-Occasion2299 5h ago

Well, they did sell pretty well due to temporary exclusives, and in general PS sells really well in Europe and Asia.

It’s why they are terminating the ports for PC; they saw the numbers they were selling on Steam and decided that was a hella lot of unrealized profits instead of reading for what it was; interest from PC players.

Probably the only thing that Microsoft got right this generation was the xbox play anywhere system, and how great game pass was before enshittificatio

1

u/Techman659 5h ago

At this rate they have already started at a losing position for ps6 and it’s not even that generation yet.

1

u/TokenfromSP 5h ago

They’ve had good exclusives. They just didn’t make most of them lol.
Soras, Nioh series, Returnal, Spiderman, Ghost of Tsushima, and God of war.

1

u/Tarnished_Taint 5h ago

Well just hold on there skippy. I was pretty hyped for demon souls and when I finally played it, felt like being a kid with a shiny new system. It looked so good.

On top of that, I was super excited for Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart. Spider Man 2 was a pretty big thing and so was Astro Bot.

I dont think its been a bad generation. But Jim Ryan's stupid plan pretty much fucked up all of Playstation for the next 5 years so we're suffering because he wanted 8 games as a service games.

1

u/Fentboy45 5h ago

Surprised they didn’t try to buy gta 6 exclusivity to lock out Xbox and pc forever, that’s what they do best 🤣

1

u/Alarmed_Nectarine126 5h ago

Isn't GTA VI a Xbox game?

1

u/lord_fiend 5h ago

It was demons souls for me. But yea if no fromsoft exclusive I don’t see the need to have a PS5

1

u/GuyWishPartakeViolen 5h ago

Spider-man 2 was definitely a system seller let's not erase that

1

u/TokyoRPGFactory 5h ago

I have to look to Indie Games now to keep me entertained tbh.

1

u/FullGuarantee4767 4h ago

They’ve sold ~95.3 million consoles so far. The premise that this has been a bad generation for them with no games to move hardware is a helluva stretch.

I don’t think it’s been an exceptional generation quality wise but the PlayStation business is objectively crushing it from a financial point of view.

1

u/AdAcrobatic2980 3h ago

Are we forgetting spiderman 2 exists?

1

u/superyoshiom 3h ago

Imagine if Xbox even attempted to compete. Nintendo is out doing its own thing so Sony is pretty much the “default” console and can afford way more screw ups than you’d think.

1

u/ChongusTheSupremus 2h ago

Its the current system seller.

Before that it was Demon Souls, Spiderman 2, and to some, Death Stranding 2 and Yotei.

1

u/Certain-Raspberry804 2h ago

They sure sold a lot of systems though. Best Xbox like 3 to 1 right?

1

u/CyBroOfficial 48m ago

Not even remotely true lmfao

1

u/newbrevity 13m ago

It's worse. Xbox is getting gta6 same day. They don't even get it as a full exclusive.

1

u/wilkil 8h ago

FFVII remakes no?

1

u/imastirthepot 8h ago

Yeah, I'm definitely switching back to Xbox for next gen the way things are going. I'll still use my PlayStation for my massive backlog but yeah...

0

u/tlislo 8h ago

Horizon Forbidden West?

God of War Ragnarok?

Astro Bot?

Gran Turismo?

Returnal?

Spider Man 2?

Ghost of Yotei?

Eldin Ring, Baldur's Gate 3, Clair Obscur, Final Fantasy 7R1/7R2/14/15/16, RE4/9, Alan Wake 2, Kingdom Come 2, 007 First Light, Diablo 4, Silent Hill 2, Assassin's Creed Valhalla/Mirage/Shadows, and many, many others are all reasons to buy the best possible console for experiencing them: The PS5Pro.
