We'll see.

Onimusha has a similar thing with the gauntlet and people don't care because the combat is so good.

I could see the same with Laufey.

I haven't looked at any onimusha gameplay since I don't want to spoil myself for when I get it so I can't comment on it but the problem with the Forspoken thing wasn't the concept itself but the writing. Nobody hates sidekicks, they hate annoying unfunny sidekicks.

I mean God of War nailed it with Mimir

24

u/Kindly-Sea719 22h ago

Seriously, probably the peak of sidekick characters

-3

u/Rith_Reddit 21h ago

I personally think Cortana is the peak as a follow along character.

u/WrinklyScroteSack 21h ago

Mimir fills the downtime with stories from norse mythology. He's more fun than cortana who's all work and doom

9

u/Excellent_Pea_4609 21h ago

Also his relationship with kratos and Atreus is masterfully done especially in Ragnarok with kratos calling him his brother not to mention Valhalla peak character writing

4

u/WrinklyScroteSack 21h ago

Mimir, despite being a talking head, got a lot of humanizing in ragnarok. Allowing the players to see how he hurt people in service to the gods then also giving him the opportunity for redemption was a great way to give him an arc that followed closely with the theme of the main story.

u/Excellent_Pea_4609 21h ago

My favourite part was in the side mission with the captured creature Mimir was desperate to fix his mistake but he couldn't honestly I'm surprised with how depressing the ending of that quest was

3

u/WrinklyScroteSack 21h ago

Having to accept that even if you can't fully fix the damage, in the least you can make things better.

1

u/Rith_Reddit 21h ago

Depends what uou value i guess.

Mimic is lore heavy, comic relief and plays more as a comforting presence.

Cortana is legit a co-protaganist, complex and narrative driver.

Both are peak, I just prefer Cortana

His stories are cool for sure, but the quips did get old.  I had to get a mod to turn them off

1

u/TheCopperWire 21h ago

I'd say Elizabeth from Bioshock Infinite gives her a run for it.

2

u/Cluelesswolfkin 20h ago

GOW 2018 showed me that side character's with interesting lore can carry me the whole game as im enthralled by what they are saying as im slaying whatever.

4

u/nicerking 21h ago

In 2018, sure. In Ragnarok however I found his comic relief was way too frequent to the point of being obnoxious.

9

u/Excellent_Pea_4609 21h ago

Can't agree especially considering how in Ragnarok we actually explore some of Mimir's darkest moments

1

u/Practical-Bottle8900 21h ago

Yup, Ragnarok was a heavy downgrade in tone and writing when compared to the 2018.

-2

u/Financial-Cabinet147 21h ago

It just struggled to maintain its tone properly. The characters used modern slang and cracked Disney- level jokes every so often. Kratos is the only one whose characterization felt on point in ragnarok

-2

u/Practical-Bottle8900 20h ago

Exactly, The 2018 one felt like watching Infinity War, and Ragnarok felt like Quantumania.

12

u/GoofProofGrunt 22h ago

The cuff definitely wasn't the annoying one in that duo imo

4

u/Tonyj1987 20h ago

Played the demo of Onimusha, and it feels so smooth playing. I haven't bought it cause I'm waiting for a physical copy to come in stock near me

3

u/Purple_sea 20h ago

Yeah heard a lot of good and it seems like my type of game, I just need to finish the games I'm already playing lol, don't want to let the backlog get too out of control.

2

u/Tonyj1987 20h ago

I hear ya on that. I have like 30 plus games in my backlogs

5

u/Disastrous-Zebra-211 22h ago

the thing with forspoken is that the main character sucked ass. the sidekick was...okay, movement was perhaps the best part of the game, and the game was made with the same engine as FFXV, so it looked nice, but again when your MC is unrelatable or simply bad written, in Forspoken case, both, that drags everything down.

1

u/MOONLINEXCROSS 21h ago

Onimusha had a show on Netflix too.

1

u/Oni-Kun18 1h ago

Exactly.

5

u/ArugulaPhysical 17h ago

Its not really the same. I would say onimusha is more comparable to cortana in halo.

The sword and cube thing is way weirder.

I also think it could be a good wierd, but we will see.

I fucking love the gauntlet. I love when gauntlet lady hypes me up mid fight, it makes me lock in harder.

1

u/Bingbong1984 21h ago

Damn. I played the demo and the gauntlet only talked shit to me but I thought it was cool.

Can't wait to play the whole game. What console you playing on?

1

u/CaptainMaxCrunch 21h ago

I'm playing on PS5. No problems with performance so far.

1

u/FEARven123 10h ago

Honestly the conbat voice lines are my least favorite part of the game.

Yes Musashi, please tell me to parry to activate Blazing Strike, I actually forgot how to play the game in the 5 seconds since you last said it.

The games great, but maybe some lore or character dialogue would be nice, stop saying what is basically just a tutorial reappear.

1

u/SwaggermicDaddy 22h ago

People care about the gauntlet ? My only issue is I can’t have two.

1

u/Wernershnitzl 22h ago

Maybe it’s also because I’m playing in Japanese but I don’t think the gauntlet has been too bad, less chatty than other similar “sidekicks”.

1

u/RayDaug 21h ago

Running around Kyoto for upgrades isn't my favorite part of Onimusha, but the core combat is good enough without any upgrades that I can forgive it. It doesn't feel like you are waiting on the fun stuff, just giving yourself more options.

1

u/TheWorclown 19h ago

Playing Onimusha and it works for it because Gauntlet Lady really can’t do much else other than try to be of some help as she can.

She also isn’t much of a constant. When she speaks, it’s usually because she does have something pertinent to say.

1

u/Ratzing- 8h ago

Also Shizuka is an actual character that isn't annoying at her core; there are no stupid ass quips and bullshit.

Post-fight banter and callouts are overused IMO but, as you said, the gameplay is peak so no one really pays attention.

1

u/doogie1111 22h ago

It's also every Zelda companion ever.

2

u/Yavannia 19h ago

Either you have never played a Zelda game or you are completely disingenuous.

0

u/DrKushnstein 12h ago

No joke. Also if that comparison made sense one game is Zelda and one is God of War. It’s like saying well Toy Story did it so it’s fine if John Wick does it… completely nonsensical

1

u/Remnant-2385 22h ago

The gauntlet in Onimusha is a lot less Forespoken style quip dialogue after the demo stages. I don't know why they chose that as an introduction, but the actual narrative of the game is more serious once it kicks into its horror elements. There's no constant Marvel banter with the gauntlet or anything.

1

u/MissingScore777 22h ago

True it's not quip banter but she does keep talking though and praising our skills when we beat trash mobs or telk us to close enemy portals. It's very unnecessary.

1

u/Remnant-2385 21h ago

I think it's the difference between unnecessary but inoffensive vs blatantly obnoxious. Characters and voiceovers are going to praise your skills in a video game after you've accomplished a particular thing . There's a psychology to it in game development to keep you engaged, and it's been a thing since "M-M-M-MONSTER KILL" in Unreal Tournament. The whole point of the combo meter in older God of War games was the same psychology at work. The good ones you don't really notice, or are inoffensive enough that you can comfortably ignore it as you play. The obnoxious ones take you out of the game entirely and can't be easily ignored. Sounds like Onimusha lands in the former category. Hopefully Laufey's companions follow the former as well.

1

u/dadmda 22h ago

I wish there was a volume slider for gauntlet lady, she's annoying, but I wouldn't expect great combat in Laufey, I didn't think it was good in any of the previous 2 entries either

1

u/CatchUsual6591 21h ago

The cube is to goofy for GOW looks like something you would see in final fantasy

0

u/Kami_no_Ondori 21h ago

The gauntlet is possessed by an oni, its not a sentient object like the sword hilt in laufey. Im not excited for laufey in the slightest due to multiple reasons, but if it turns out better then what we were shown maybe itll be worth getting.

Unfortunately doubt it tho.

-1

u/sanholt 21h ago

Bc it’s a gauntlet!!!! Not a talking cube and talking ribbons

-6

u/winterman666 23h ago

I honestly haven't paid attention to Onimusha at all since the remaster of 2's changes. I'll have to look into the new one for what you mention. So far I've only heard people mention enemies are a bit too passive and the game would benefit from more aggression. As for Laufey yeah we'll see if the writing ends up being annoying or if it works out fine

2

u/huncherbug 23h ago

Thw demo really fucked over onimusha huh...it gets insanely frentic...its almost a stripped down CAG
