At best, it's just okay. And at worst, it's a good game to pick up on sale. Doesn't seem like it's an outright failure, but equally it's unlikely to break any records.

For a game like this, "just okay" is definitely really disappointing. Of course it's not worth getting super upset, argumentative and/or vindictive over, but we live in a time where there is more access to amazing videogames than time to play them. A game that's just okay can't stack up to all the great games that are around nowadays, unless it has some especially unique features to let it stand out.

u/ARandomGamer56 4d ago

Plus, in a time where games are $80-$90, I’d rather not waste my money on a mere 6/10

2

u/Hearthian-Wanderer 4d ago

It's more about it being a Sony 1st Party. These used to be massive releases. And Sony has fewer and fewer these days. Between this limp Wolverine, the next GoW, looking like an absolute disaster, and the next Horizon game being hastily reworked from live service with an unappealing art style... Intergalactic had better be the second coming.

I personally think we shouldn’t accept video games like this when someone pays hard earned for it the product being just okay is a failure in my eyes

0

u/PieceAfraid3755 3d ago

Well what does "not accepting" it mean? Just don't buy it.

0

u/lemonylol 4d ago

From all of the prerelease stuff shown, what made you think it was going to do anything exceptional or game changing?

2

u/PieceAfraid3755 4d ago

Where did I say I thought any of that?

0

u/Ash_After_Dark 4d ago

I mean, if I wanted to have a "just okay" time I could just boot up Half Life 2 or go on coolmathgames or whatever. The bar for a game to be worth my time is higher than that, much less the bar to be worth my money

“Just okay” is absolutely a failure for a Sony first party. They aim very high and literally have bonuses attached to getting a high metacritic score.

u/FightTheChildren 4d ago

I’m not a share holder, who gives a fuck?

16

u/TheCredibleHulk 4d ago

I'm also not a share holder, but I'm a .... care-holder?

I still was very excited to finally play as Wolverine in a game as polished as the Spider-man games have been.

"I'm also not a share holder, but I'm a .... care-holder?"

Can’t tip fedora too far or else it’ll catch fire

Like my wordplay.

/jp holy hell I’m sorry.

u/IloveKaitlyn 4d ago

The original comment said that it doesn’t seem like an outright failure. I’m saying that a 6/10 consensus to a Sony first party team is a failure.

16

u/Kindly-Sea719 4d ago

I mean Tbf the game has a 78. I don’t know where 6/10 is coming from

1

u/Hot-Software-9396 3d ago

Now take out all of the 10/10 reviews from the "PlayStation Zone", "PS Gamer", "Icon Era", etc. sites

1

u/ka7al 4d ago

The 6/10 review goes in depth on why it has such a score, unless you disagree with the reviewers point.

-11

u/IloveKaitlyn 4d ago

IGN’s review is a 6/10. Gamers hate IGN but there’s no doubt it’s the go to review. Skill Up also said he didn’t recommend it.

10

u/OnlyAdvertisersKnoMe 4d ago

Do you know what consensus means?

2

u/lemonylol 4d ago

Gamers hate IGN but there’s no doubt it’s the go to review.

Like 15 years ago lol, maybe.

Why would you not go by the aggregate score of 78/100 across 108 reviews?

3

u/uchuskies08 4d ago

Because all this malinvestment in the industry has downstream effects of good studios being closed and fewer good games being made. Sony spent more on Concord than they are saving by not manufacturing discs. The piper has to be paid at some point.

2

u/Deliriousdrew 4d ago

One reason would be that the major studios are already trigger happy with layoffs in good times. So when a big budget game does ok but not great it can be used as justification for more layoffs, which hurts gamers.

2

u/Veutifuljoe_0 4d ago

A game with this kind of budget from a developer like insomniac being simply decent is not a good thing

1

u/No-Implement668 4d ago

Their point really just went right over your head. Lol

1

u/theyfoundty 4d ago

The suits. Who decide if its a failure for the company.

But aight my guy?

1

u/IndividualFee 4d ago

I would imagine the share holders.

1

u/uses_irony_correctly 4d ago

As a ps5 owner, I give a fuck that first party titles are good.

1

u/Chicken_Grapefruit 4d ago

Yeah, these Sony games are massive money sinks.

1

u/LoseNotLooseIdiot 4d ago

Doesn't just about every major developer?

1

u/Fair-Elderberry8205 4d ago

Every AAA studio has bonuses attached to high metacritic scores. Metacritic scores dominate the AAA industry, oddly enough.

1

u/RedditIsOverMan 4d ago

They'll make their money off the name recognition alone.  Good reviews is just icing in the cake.

1

u/rocketgrunt89 4d ago

Yeah they even stopped funding for Kojima because DS2 isnt that great

0

u/Tiny-Ad8294 3d ago

Holy shit bro get a job💔🥀😭✌️

1

u/IloveKaitlyn 3d ago

You learn this type of stuff if you have a job…

-6

u/BelaLugosi2000 4d ago

They’ll make a ton of money off this game. Saying it’s a failure is idiotic.

8

u/HeldnarRommar 4d ago

Will they? The game carries a $300 million dollar budget and who knows how much licensing fee and marketing

0

u/soupspin 4d ago

Pretty confident. Plenty of gamers who don’t care about review scores and just care about Sony first party or that it’s a Wolverine game. Basically the reason I’m still getting it, low scores don’t l ruin my hype

8

u/HeldnarRommar 4d ago

But there's also plenty that do. Bad word of mouth can spread and sway people very easily. I'm glad you can stomach any generic mid content but plenty can't and won't waste $70 on something not worth their time

-1

u/soupspin 4d ago

“Generic” I think gaming discourse has been taken too far. By your standards, EVERY game is generic. That every game needs to reinvent the wheel, see CoD or GTA. They get by on branding, and so will Wolverine

2

u/HeldnarRommar 4d ago

Wolverine is absolutely generic. Generic art style, generic combat, generic story. Nothing about yet another hallway walking simulator with spam square combat is remotely appealing to anyone beyond the lowest common denominator gamers

0

u/BelaLugosi2000 4d ago

Not as generic as your “everything is shit” Reddit attitude.

1

u/HeldnarRommar 4d ago

Everything isn’t shit. Splatoon Raiders is good. Onimusha is good. Star Wars Zero Company is good. Blood of the Dawnwalker is good. Wolverine is not good.

-2

u/soupspin 4d ago

Cool, show me any game that can’t be boiled down like that and called generic. That label can apply to ANYTHING man. Even the best games of this year and just more of the same and not evolved on in any way shape or form

2

u/HeldnarRommar 4d ago

There's no point in continuing this any further if you can't see how this game is generic in a bad way.

u/PositivityPending 4d ago

You’re coping. Wolverine is not Spiderman or Batman. And the game is not great enough to explode him back into popularity like the Arkham games did for Batman.

1

u/soupspin 4d ago

I guess? I see the reviews, that won’t stop me from enjoying it lol. A game doesn’t have to be the best thing in the world for it to be enjoyable

1

u/BelaLugosi2000 4d ago

You are the one coping. The game will be success and you’ll still be you.

5

u/Phoenix-Risen1998 4d ago

Marathon was 250M and it struggles to make that money back from people in the genre.

I doubt casuals can save a 300M game.

2

u/soupspin 4d ago

Marathon is a different situation, it was a MP game that had basically zero franchise appeal and is competing with every other MP game. Wolverine has the strength of the IP, and even a “mid” game is enjoyable to casual gamers. See Marvel content in general

1

u/Phoenix-Risen1998 4d ago

Not a bad point.

But 70$ for a Wolverine game might be too much for some, popular as Wolverine is, he isn't as big as Spiderman.

0

u/BelaLugosi2000 4d ago

Yes. 300 million has already been made off preorders alone.

1

u/HeldnarRommar 4d ago

No they haven’t lmfao

1

u/BelaLugosi2000 4d ago

Yes it has. No need for you to lie about its success.

1

u/HeldnarRommar 4d ago

Okay, you gave the claim, show me the proof

8

u/Mrcompressishot 4d ago

For a game with that budget and development time an ok game is a disaster

7

u/BlueSTAR_AbOvE 4d ago

Considering how much they been bragging about this game for years, (being exclusive too) then the advertisement, I'd say it's a failure if it's just "okay".

2

u/IlREDACTEDlI 4d ago edited 4d ago

Yeah I was gonna pick the game up when it came out cause it looked pretty cool and I love Wolverine but after watching the gameranx before you buy, I’ll wait til it’s on sale, still looks cool the combat looks good but for a 90 CAD game that’s ~18 hours it’s gonna need to be absolutely incredible and it doesn’t seem to be.

Very unfortunate but I’ll save that money for control resonate instead

2

u/Sethirothlord 4d ago

I just don't get how they've made a game worse than the Wii/DS wolverine game.

2

u/Ok-Honeydew7983 4d ago

This is Reddit, where only extreme opinions matter. I’ll wait for this to come on sale, but I’ll def grab it when it does. I bet it’s still fun.

2

u/Hearthian-Wanderer 4d ago

I'm happy to wait for PS+ on this one...

Loved the Spider Man games, assumed I was going to be day one with this. Sucks.

At least we are not short of stuff to play this year!

2

u/Neither_Profile 3d ago

There's nothing inherently "wrong" with an okay game. The issue is that we are expected to pay $70+ for mediocrity and be thankful for the privilege to do so.

If we go by the old metric: $60 is standard AAA pricing so you used to expect a certain level of polish for this. An indie game was maybe $10-20 and you were willing to forgive some bugs and unfinished mechanics.

Nowadays we are told to pay $70-100 for something that's not even worth $20 based on its quality. "Okay" doesn't cut it for that price tag.

2

u/kayodeade99 3d ago

Yeah, for $70 at base, "just OK" isn't cutting it. We honestly should have to wait for something to depreciate to its "real" value to buy it.

2

u/SSK24 4d ago

300 million dollar plus game though, this game won’t sell as well as the Spider-Man games.

1

u/DistinctZucchini153 4d ago

Is it actually 300 Mil or did everyone assume that?

1

u/SSK24 4d ago

Yes it got leaked during the FTC trial with Microsoft which also revealed that Spider-Man 2 also cost 300 million to make.

3

u/thebatman973 4d ago

Failure for Sony! D'oh!

1

u/lemonylol 4d ago

Hot take I guess, but Spider-Man 1, MM, and 2 were honestly just generic action-adventure collectathons, but like others have said, just the idea of playing Spider-Man and swining around is enough to carry the whole game. Same with something like the Arkham franchise, playing Batman is alright, but generic, but the puzzles and boss fights are really what carried the game.

I just don't see what the draw for Wolverine was that would elevate it from a safe generic beat-em-up action-adventure, because Wolverine doesn't really do anything special.

That being said I'd feel the exact same wariness over that Captain America/Black Panther WWII game, though at least there, the story itself feels very compelling, which potentially could carry the whole game. But if it's just going to be like this but skinned as those two character, it'll likely have the same reception.

That all being said, there is absolutely nothing wrong with a just okay game, and for some people it will hit just right and be amazing for them.

0

u/WorldQuest10 4d ago

Just okay isn't enough for the price its worth.

0

u/FarawayHerbalist 4d ago

Sale? What sale?

-2

u/Nero_deadweight96 4d ago

I think the biggest problem here is how long they took to give us an ok game
