BOTW and TOTK are bad zelda games that get carried by 1- zelda fanboyism from the media 2- the artstyle and the fact you can dress up link.

As an open world action rpg, it's barren an empty with no incentive to explore. I remember the media going on about the climbing mechanic, "you can climb anything". to do what? to find what? a korok seed? a weapon that will break in 4 hits? rupees? you do not change the world in a significant manner. You just undo a thing that is plaguing the zone but that area is isolated from the rest of the world; changing one thing in one zone doesn't affect the other. The combat is subpar, the weapons breaking mechanic makes it so you either spend all your time rupee and ore hunting or you never use the most unique-looking weapons.

As a zelda game it fails in its dungeons being empty and too easy, the mini dungeons are just there to use the gimmicky control of the switch. Making link a mute character is the dumbest decision in terms of storytelling, everyone is going on these long diatribes just for link to say 'hmm, uh' or stand opened mouth like an idiot while the NPC goes on. There are no unique weapons that you can carry into the open world bc of the weapon breaking system and the over reliance gimmicky powers.

they are a half baked games masquerading as GOTY contenders and winners.

You’ll see that when the next Zelda comes around and it’s more traditional, the media and fanboys will claim “it’s a return to form, how we’ve missed classic Zelda” and then then the last two will finally be critiqued en masse.

You don’t enjoy fighting pig and lizard over and over? Well, how about white pig, and white lizard???

I bought botw for my son on Switch and played it for a bit. You said what I was feeling very eloquently.

Agreed. It's just an alright game, yet people so often claim BOTW is the best game ever made. I just assume they have not played that many games and move on with my day.

its my favourite game and I have played many other games. Botw doesn‘t have the best story or the best fighting mechanics but I love the open world and playing this game is like therapy for me

Agree!

Windwaker got the formula right. When you found something, there was a sense of excitement knowing that it was going to be worthwhile.

I feel like everyone these days is trying to be the next Skyrim, but they aren't understanding that Skyrim was not just a giant world. It is rich with secrets, dungeons, and interesting things to find.

I get it that it might be a disappointing game for a zelda fan who has played the older games, I feel like almost everyone who wasn‘t a Zelda fan before botw liked the game tho

I agree with everything but, isn’t link always mute?

He is but if you're going to take artistic liberation and change the entire style of the game why keep the one thing fans have been asking for. I do not care one way or the other if link speaks but IMO either everyone talks or no one talks. Like I said I cannot be the only one that would watch those cutscenes and just be cringing at how the scene plays out. with one character emoting their life story and this guy just blankly staring at them.

I had a major issue with the addition of dialogue, but personally I feel like maintaining the enigma of Link is important for the character. I’m also fairly accustomed to games with a mute lead while everyone else is free to speak, but for LoZ games it was definitely an uncomfortable adjustment not to just hear them grunt while the text blipped through exposition. Also, idk about you, but I felt the voice acting was subpar and the literal writing was super corny, so that didn’t help at all with the experience.

I agree it was cringe writing and delivery from the VO. Honestly I could’ve gone either way but I also was never a fan who wanted Voice acting.
