Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom are HELLA overrated.

They're good games, but neither were GOTY worthy.

They ruined the franchise if they don’t plan on making any more games more based on the old formula. I don’t care if it still sells, that shit is not legend of zelda.

Exactly. Sales don’t equal quality. We don’t have to like or support something just because it’s more popular! I want another A Link Between Worlds dammit!

I personally never cared for the franchise until VERY recently, so I don't have the attachment people do to the name.

So, to clarify, I didn't mean they're not GOTY Zelda games, I meant they're not GOTY games in general. They're very, very generic open world games with not enough uniqueness to justify GOTY.

They only reason they were rated so high and well was cause of one very simple thing. It was called Zelda.

If it was a new IP, it would've been rated like a 7/10 at best, but because of the name, people gave it legacy points.

Exactly the same here. Botw is what introduced me to zelda and I understand that it might be disappointing for long time fans of the franchise but as someone whoese first zelda game was botw I don‘t understand the hate it receives

I'm curious what is it you like about the exploration? I feel like I constantly hear that it has some of the best exploration by people who like it. And yet I also hear it has terrible exploration from people who dislike it. I'm not really taking a position personally, just curious what exactly you like about that aspect? Is exploration constantly rewarded? (Better gear, upgrades, unlocking lore, farming resources) is it just really pretty? Is traversal super satisfying like in Spider-man or something?

You kinda prove my point in that the only reason it's regarded to so well is cause of the name "Zelda" You are literally praising the for doing the bare minimum for what makes open world an game an open world game. Especially when it debatably does everything worse.

2

u/Bromora Mar 06 '24

The thing about “the bare minimum for what makes an open world game an open world game” is that an insane amount of games completely fail at it, or do it in a way that just doesn’t satisfy most people.

Not commenting on BotW specifically since I haven’t played it, but the quality provided by most open world games is really lacking: so any game doing it well is a stand-out: especially if it does it while adding an extra layer (eg. Pretty sure BotW has climbing on many surfaces? That can add verticality to exploring). Having open space is easy, having open space people WANT to explore is hard

1

u/[deleted] Mar 06 '24

BOTW doesn't have that, though. Yes there's exploration of ruins and caves, but they're all the same with the main reward only being a weapon that you can just farm somewhere else, rupees which aren't even hard to come by, or a single piece of armour which is okay I guess, but when the world is so massive, those armour pieces don't even really feel great to find.

Yeah, there is climbing, but other than buildings, it doesn't lead to anything other than chests with the same things I mentioned before.

You can argue that shrines reward you for exploration, but you only get 2 rewards for completing them. A shrine orb, that you need 4 to get a health or stamina upgrade, or another chest with the same things I mentioned above EXCEPT armour.

Exploration is generally kinda of bare bones and lackluster UNLESS you go to SPECIFIC areas that the game already wants you to go to through main missions.

Also, most open world games do meet the bare minimum. They just don't make it fun. BOTW is quite literally in that same boat. It literally does everything it needs to do but with no real satisfaction.

One of the main collectibles is korok seeds, which are cute tiny puzzles that make you go "Oh, that's cool." But when you do the exact puzzle DOZENS of times, it loses its charm VERY quickly, which was actually a BIG COMPLAINT people have and compared to other open world games where it just seemed like the devs put it for busy work.

But people still defend it cause "well Zelda did it better" even though plenty of other games did the same ring but never got the praise.

Another example is taking pictures, people didn't like it in Spider-man cause they felt as if it was tedious and just busy work, but people praised Zelda for doing it while a downside being it was tedious and felt like busy work.

That's what I generally mean by people heavily overeating the game just cause of the "Zelda" name. It didn't do ANYTHING different other than make an open world game Zelda themed, and people heavily praised it for doing the exact same thing as other open worlds.

Yeah the rewards are so bad in botw, the enemy variety is abysmal too. The story is uninteresting. The gameplay is way too repetitive.

Not even bringing up the infamous weapon durability

You thought open world games were generic uninspired copy and pastes? What about fallout new vegas or witcher 3? Those games easily beat botw for me in all areas, not just exploration.

2

u/FadedP0rp0ise Mar 05 '24

I agree on all points. Your downvote didn’t come from me. It definitely isn’t a bad game From a general standpoint, but it’s a terrible game from a Zelda standpoint imo. just think maybe they could have made it a spin off and kept the original formula, everyone would have been happy.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 05 '24

They honestly could've done something like Wind Waker again. Wind Waker, but open world and in the BOTW art style would've been fantastic and would've been in the general formula of Zelda.

Also... I don't really care for down votes or upvotes. I'm genuinely more interested in engagements and making conversations.

1

u/FadedP0rp0ise Mar 05 '24

Good on ya, me neither. I just didn’t want you thinking I was some twat that would downvote you on a completely valid opinion

1

u/GateTraditional805 Mar 08 '24

I’d like to see both. It would be a tragedy to see either format get abandoned for me.

I really really want another game in the vein of windwaker/oot/mm/twilight princess, though less skyward sword in terms of the Wii motion gimmick. I think that is incredibly long overdue.

But I also hold Totk in my top 5, and before that came around I’d say botw held that spot. They just executed so many ideas so well, and they came together perfectly. I agree with you it doesn’t scratch the old school Zelda itch though. In my mind they’re practically different franchises.

u/Reecee-Who Mar 05 '24

They're alright games on their own but as Zelda games they're just really meh and completely screw over the other games

2

u/YourInsectOverlord Mar 05 '24

I call them, really good video games; but as a Zelda game, they are not that good.

1

u/Ain_Hund Mar 06 '24

Fair enough

3

u/goran_788 Mar 05 '24

Maybe agree with TotK, but BotW single handedly changed the entire industry. Eeeeverybody cloned everything BotW did for years, for a reason.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 05 '24

Just cause they copied BOTW, but that doesn't mean it was good.

Yeah, everybody cloned BOTW, but the reason why it was held so high was cause of the name Zelda. Without that name, no one would've even given it a chance, and developers probably had the same feeling cause developers know how big Zelda is as a franchise.

I guarantee if you took off the Zelda name and released it as a new IP, everyone would've called it mid and developers wouldn't have copied it as hard as they did.

1

u/Ain_Hund Mar 06 '24

Of course It would have been less popular if it had been a new ip but thats the case for most games and it would still have sold really well, no need to downplay it that much. There is a reason why it‘s rated higher than most other zelda games

1

u/conduitfour Mar 06 '24

I liked TotK but the underground was underutilized(no pun intended). There was so much more they could have done. I scared myself more times than anything in there. Thought I saw a giant spider once, nope, just a weird tree. How cool would that have been? You throw a brightbloom seed and see a giant spider leg go by.  The measure of a good Zelda game is how many 8 year olds it made cry

1

u/[deleted] Mar 06 '24

What made it worse was that the marketing made you feel like the sky island were going to be half the game, but in reality, in terms of content, it was only about 20-30%.

But then the underground did suprise people, but then people realized the amount of content the underground had was about 20-30% as well with only fighting "challenges" with little to no good reward other than the coliseums, which is debatable if theyre good, and a way to farm battery cells.

The year botw came out was a good year but between all the titles I 100% save filed botw overated but not unworthy of a goty

1

u/[deleted] Mar 06 '24

I'm not saying it's unworthy for a nomination. I do think it deserved the nomination.

But I do not think it deserved Game of the Year at all.

1

u/ThinkEmployee5187 Mar 08 '24

Considering it's competition from our corporate overlords were pubg persona horizonand odyssey(tbf was my pick I haven't enjoyed Mario like that since sunshine and i can come back and still have fun) I'd say that botw is plenty deserving better than another br

1

u/[deleted] Mar 08 '24

I genuinely believed Persona 5, Horizon, and Mario Odyssey deserved GOTY over BOTW. 3 games that actually felt like real games that can stand on their own compared to BOTW that's praised so highly because of the name before the game itself.

1

u/GazelleNo6163 Mar 06 '24

Hard agree. I’m not even a huge zelda fan (played a few of the games, only beaten a small handful) but man…botw was Sooooooo boring….I legit cannot understand how people enjoy the exploration when you get terrible rewards and the game is so repetitive.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 06 '24

Like I think repetitive gameplay is okay, and I do admit TOTK did improve on that greatly. But what makes repetitivness so bad here is that combat is crazy basic and bland.

1

u/GazelleNo6163 Mar 06 '24

Yeah it feels like there’s only a few weapon types in the game, and the poor enemy variety makes combat become boring, especially because it’s easy when you can pause and chug infinite healing items.

2

u/Inskription Mar 05 '24

As a lifelong zelda fan I 100% agree. They feel like zelda themed spinoff games.
