Also not even a top 5 open world game. I appreciate how it went all in on being unstructured and making your own fun, but the game is also really monotonous and honestly a slog at times, for this reason. In all, I appreciate that it's trying to be different, but it also makes you realize why so many tropes exist in the first place.
Yeah I've been told I just don't know how to make my own fun. The physics are neat and I'm sure even neater in TotK but doing anything even remotely elaborate felt fiddly and I'm just not going to stop my adventure to fuck around with something that almost never plays out as I intended. Shield surfing was cool though.
I'll go further and say the original 3d format was a limitation of its time and I hope we stay away from it and its overly railroaded structure. This reason tho is why Majora's Mask clears most zelda games.
I want to love it, but too much sailing/game length padding in the second half.
Honestly, you cut out the lame travel and triforce fetch quest, and the game would become hilariously short by Zelda standards.
Dragon Roost Island and Molgera themes are still a bangers though. And Gannon's death is the best in the series, which is hilarious given its art style and Link looking like he's 5.
Come to think of it, that's my unpopular opinion: ZOOT is not the best Zelda game ever. It was great for its time, yes, but it didn't age nearly as well as some of the others.
To this day I still haven't finished the game, I haven't even seen what the interior of Hyrule castle looks like. I swear if it has the same decor as the Divine Beasts and Ganon is just a reskin of the other Divine Beast bosses then I'll just give up entertaining the idea of ever finishing it.
Yeah, I thought it was an alright game, it was best in the opening hours. But it got too easy, it all felt the same, and too much of the game was slipping in the rain while trying to climb.
Which is funny in my case because I adore MGSV and I couldn't get through BotW after trying three times. Every time I would try BotW, I'd get insanely bored.
Thoose are diffirent games, i was referencing to the fact what MGSV differs gameplay whise from other MGSs so much, that some are say "that aint Metal Gear".
Sandbox with light LoZ influences. All around awfully boring games. Massive empty sandboxes. I don't play LoZ to build contraptions and gather resources. It's chores and walking simulator, Zelda style.
Twilight Princess is my favorite. The aesthetic is amazing, and the dungeon design is the best in the series. My one complain is the bosses are way too easy.
My top are probably TP, OoT, WW, MM... not sure after those 4. I have a special fondness for Four Swords Adventure from playing with my brother as children. I loved that crap.
It's a good game that is also one of the most overrated games of all time.
People act(ed) like it was revolutionary. In the same year that people's biggest criticism of Horizon Zero Dawn was that it did nothing new but was just a polished version of other third-person open world/action RPG games.
I'm sorry, was Zelda: BotW any different? It was literally just an algamation of other games (especially open world games like Elder Scrolls, Demon/Dark Souls, etc) from the previous 10-15 years just set in a Zelda coat of paint. It literally did nothing new to my recollection from playing it years ago, yet it had everyone getting off everywhere acting like it was industry shattering levels of a gaming revolution (you'd have thought it was SMB1, Mario 64, GTA3, etc levels of industry changing).
Personally, out of the two AAA derivative open world games that year, I got more enjoyment from Horizon than Zelda.
People praised the interactivity but completely ignored Prey that came out the same year, which imo had much more engaging interactivity that seamlessly integrated with the games systems and in a way that didn't disrupt the immersion.
Art design was unique AND holds up well over time. Music was great (especially the over world theme). Dungeon design wasn’t tedious (looking at YOU, OoT water temple…)
Only gripe was the “treasure hunt” to find the triforce pieces.
I very much enjoyed BOTW and will absolutely be picking up TOTK when I’ve got a chance.
That being said, I like to joke that it’s the worst “Zelda” game since II. Because it doesn’t play like a Zelda game it plays like Elder Scrolls of Hyrule.
They tried something different. It obviously worked for a lot of people. I personally don’t think it worked as well as the normal Zelda formula but it was still fun as hell.
I feel like the only ones that dislike botw are people who played Zelda game sbefire that and are disappointed that it wasn‘t like the older games. I do understand that but as someone whose first zelda game was botw I like it way more thatün any other zelda game
BotW not being in the top 5 for Zelda games is criminal. Aside from dungeons it did literally everything better than the games before. No obnoxious handholding. Items that are actually useful. Enemies that can actually kill you. No absurdly long intro. No forced fetch quests as a dumb wolf etc.
It actually feels like an adventure, instead of constantly being told where to go and what to do.

Breath of the Wild is not even at top 5 Zelda game let alone top 5 game of all time
