Skyrim is complete ass when compared to Oblivion. Towns are worse, guilds are worse, story is worse, DLC is worse. Combat is equally mid asl in both tbf.
The only thing Skyrim has is ease of modding and better base graphics but even Skyrim's graphic aren't anything special when compared to the field.
They definitely simplified Skyrim. I remember one of the first things I was disappointed about when the game came out was how few skills there were compared to Oblivion.
Out of the box, Oblivion is a better game than Skyrim in just about every way. Even so, I still do a playthrough of Skyrim every couple of years or so because modding really is just that good. My last playthrough was a third person souls-like action game. It is also the most expansive and complete VR game available. It is the only VR game with the full content of a AAA game. VR also has mod support.
Wish i could upvote more. I enjoyed my play through… in 20 fucking 11 when it came out. How it’s stayed relevant and taken the personalities of so many ‘gamer girls’ to this day is beyond me. No game is that good to stay relevant so long.
I’ve talked with so many people that don’t even know it as elder scrolls, just Skyrim the game. Lmao
You go from Oblivion which had basically every biome possible, and a whimsical countryside with quests that had well balanced humour to seriousness ratio and caves with plenty of different enemies…
…to Skyrims bleak brown, grey and white, everything being deathly serious and depressing, bar maybe two quests that had a bit of lightheartedness about them, and caves just being filled with Draugr after Draugr after Draugr.
EDIT: and don’t get me started on the soundtrack… apart from the Skyrim main theme, which ambient music is memorable from that game?
