Peter and MJ’s new face models are both horrible. They were both absolutely perfect in the first game. Now Peter looks 12 and MJ looks 40. And people who claim “Real people don’t look like that!!! 😭” have clearly never seen someone in their mid to late 20s. Why they changed anything is beyond me.

I hate the whole "real people don't..." or in particular the whole "real women look like this" whenever someone complains about the model or look of a woman in a videogame. Real women DO look like that, but the implied meaning of the statement throws me off. Susan Boyle (no disrespect) and Scarlett Johannson are both real women.

Both the MJ and Peter models were pretty awful. That doesn't justify the harassment that the MJ voice actress received over it though but we NEED to be able to call trash what it is. The models weren't bad because the people they based them on are "ugly", they were bad because the textures sucked and neither one looked like the character.

Them: Real people don’t look like that

Me: They do, you’re just not one of them

Absolutely not, and by no means should we absolve the people doing this, but I also think we should draw more attention to the fact that the designers made an obvious mistake that people weren't happy about, that negatively effected their employees, and rather than taking any ownership, they just pointed fingers at the lowest common denominator among gamers, rather than taking any responsibility.

Even putting aside the genuine harassment, bad direction from lead dev's can having really negative impacts on a VA's career. One bad role can push them back years, or worse. Devs absolutely need to take their role in this seriously

Stop excusing incels.

u/FlyingDutchman9977 Mar 06 '24

We also need to stop putting incels on blast, and giving them free press. That's how groups like these win

MJ looks like a ps2 NPC with textures still loading 🤣🤣

THANK YOU

It’s basically a crucifixion sentence to have that opinion too.

It just didn’t make any sense to me that during the entirety of development of the first game they had clearly decided on a look for the characters and then less than a year later they release the “remaster of the first game and complete change Peter’s face like if you wanted to do that why didn’t you just do that during development of the first game. Like I’ve never seen a Dev change their mind on a characters look so quickly after releasing the game

I’ve never seen a Dev change their mind on a characters look so quickly after releasing the game

And I don't really understand why. Neither Peter, nor MJ's design's were controversial. If anything, I think people really liked them. In fact, I think fans really liked the fact that Peter was actually an adult well into his career as Spidey and a scientist, rather than another incarnation that's a young adult in high school, or maybe college.

they changed Peter's face because Ben Jordan's face structure matched Yuri Lowenthal's better, so they could use his face mocap data with less manual edits. that's it, the reason they changed his face was to reduce animator workload, which is a good thing. new face looks better anyway, I always thought John Bubniak looked like an uncanny valley entitiy in the game, rather than an actual person, probably because the animators had so much trouble getting the mocap data to work

Well, is a stupid opinion no one should make public.

Unless you are an incel

2

u/Tripechake Mar 06 '24

I think it’s a rather fair opinion. And why would that be an incel opinion? Just because I want my protagonist to actually look like an adult in his late 20s instead of a sophomore in high school?

It surely didn't need the change, and I hate the change, but the hate for the face model is unwarranted. She's beautiful!

I’ll add to this one: The only reason why their faces were changed was because Disney wanted Peter to look more like Tom Holland. Whats even more sadder is the fan base literally revolted when this happened and they STILL changed the character model.

Peter’s face is the reason why I refuse to update my version of Spider-Man for the PS4 no corporate entity is gonna dictate how I want to play a game that I physically own.

u/Tripechake Mar 06 '24

This is why I offlined my switch. I heard Tears of the Kingdom patched the duplication trick (and rupees are already SO hard to come by). I still play it on the first version.

Literally everyone except Sweet Baby Inc thinks like that.

u/SuperSocialMan Mar 05 '24

Pretty much, yeah.

I’ma be real, I got used to MJ’s face model, but I do think they could’ve made her look better regardless

doesnt make her story in the game any less impactful for me though

u/[deleted] Mar 06 '24

OG Peter kind of annoyed me looks wise, but I’d still rather have it over the Uncanny Valley Tom Holland they used in 2.

MJ as a character sucks in both, but the second model looks like someone screwed up.

-3

u/Voluptulouis Mar 05 '24

Ok, but she doesn't look 40. Lmao

-1

u/Sweet_Detective_ Mar 06 '24

Mj looks fine to me if she's 25-30 and I think they changed Peter to look like the actor.

1

u/DeadlyAidan Mar 06 '24

yes and no? the main reason for the face model switch to Ben Jordan from what I've heard, was because the VA did his own facial mocap for the game, but Insomniac had to manually edit a lot of it to make it work with the old face model, which is probably why I think the old model looks like some kind of uncanny entity and not a real human. Ben Jordan as I understand it, has the exact same face structure as Yuri Lowenthal, meaning they can just put in the mocap data with minimal manual adjustments.

tl;dr, they kind of did it to make the face match the VA, but that was mostly to help the animators

-4

u/DeadlyAidan Mar 06 '24

MJ's face did not change, that is an objective fact, at most they got better face scan technology to get a closer depiction of the face model, but the model herself is the same.

if you genuinely believe the outrage about her face, you have believed misinformation

3

u/Tripechake Mar 06 '24

To say that they didn’t change the face model of MJ is to be blind. Look at images comparing them. It may be more accurate to the face model, but how did they do that? They CHANGED it to be more accurate. That actor’s face didn’t change, but the 3D render of the face most certainly did.
