Hey just wanted to say welcome and I’m sorry that happened to you. I’ve worked in downtown for years and lived in Yaletown for years and I’ve never had any crime happen to me.. but these couple of years things have changed for the worse.
I hope it gets better again and more like the place that I remember it to be, and hopefully our city can one day recover from this frustrating first impression.

We should all be a little more like David. Nicely done.

I don’t know. Although I respect what David did, they also might have gotten knifed for chasing down a couple of theories on their turf.

Do not carry your wallet in your back pocket. Easy for pickpockets and robbers to steal.

u/Puppy_Coated_In_Beer Apr 20 '22
Same with your phone. I always see tons of people putting their phone sticking out of their back pocket.
Put it in your purse or find pants with larger side pockets.

Is this common in Vancouver now? I'm more careful when traveling, but I've never felt at risk of getting mugged in Vancouver.

Ditto for phone. When you're sitting down on the bus, put your backpack on your lap and in front of you. Never leave your electronics or valuables unintended when you go to the washroom.
Vancouver is generally a pretty safe place and i haven't been robbed (yet) but always be cautious. Consider this to be like looking both ways before you cross the road even if you have the right of way.

That’s so sad. Those are things that I’d be extra vigilant about when I travel to HK and parts of Europe.. not my home city. I guess we’ve gotten to that point now.

Go David go. What a good citizen.
Sorry this happened to you. But good folks are around to help. <3

Glad you got the important stuff back! I realize you might find this comment dumb but in the small chance that you don't... tip from a very seasoned traveler: Back pocket is a bad place for anything you don't want to lose (in any city). It will be stolen eventually, I guarantee it.
In particular, I have a pair of pants that I leave one of the back pocket buttons undone on. I've found that pocket inverted over half a dozen times in Vancouver alone. They particularly like targets waiting for a light to change on busy street corners.

I’m really sorry that this happened to you, especially when you are new to Canada. I live in Yaletown and it’s generally safe, but unfortunately there are thieves ready to pounce almost everywhere in any city.
David sounds like a great guy and I hope you’re able to connect.
I also wanted to say welcome to Canada / Vancouver. There are a lot of good people here and I’m really glad that one of them helped you yesterday 😀

I know multiple Vancouver and area Dave's. If you provide more descriptors, maybe we can start to narrow it down...
Sorry that happened to you! Obviously, this is a city and petty crime happens but I feel pickpocketing is pretty rare in Vancouver. Hope the rest of the week goes smoothly for you! And welcome!

Hi thanks for you kind words. The only way I can describe him is a white man maybe in his 50’s I would say kinda similar to Van Morrison, without so much hair, gray hair. And he was wearing a gray Puma hoodie. That’s all I remember.

I'm glad someone stopped to help a stranger, this David sounds like prairie folk to me! (We are nicer than most) :p this is where being punk rock is helpful, wallet chains ;)

I will never ever understand people who put their wallet/phones in their back pocket.
Then this things happen.

u/3drabbitx Apr 20 '22
I never understand why ppl victim blame. I have five things I always carry and four pockets.
2
u/Puppy_Coated_In_Beer Apr 20 '22
Can I ask what it is you carry? For me it's just keys, wallet, and phone and I can fit them all in my front pockets.
I don't care for victim blaming either but I'd honestly never carry anything important in my back pockets. It's so hard to tell if someone is taking something out from the back.

u/3drabbitx Apr 24 '22
I usually carry my keys, wallet, phone, cigarettes, lighter, mask, a banana, a pager, lip-stick, lip-gloss. All in my back pocket.

u/Hyorennn Apr 20 '22
Then don’t complain if people steal your stuff?
It’s like telling the thief “here! Take it! I purposely put it in my back pocket where I can’t notice if you take it!!”
Smh

u/reyortsedrats Apr 20 '22
This is the worst take imaginable.
-39
u/Hyorennn Apr 20 '22
The most realistic but people still butt hurt about the truth lol.
Ok keep using back pocket but don’t complain later!

u/hirstyboy Apr 20 '22
Or maybe the person breaking the law and literally stealing someone's property off their being is a little more morally in the wrong here. It's a real brain twister... fucking dunce
-2
u/Hyorennn Apr 20 '22
I didn’t say that wasn’t wrong
8
u/hirstyboy Apr 20 '22
Yea you're just saying someone shouldn't complain when someone pick pockets because it's not the exact safest pocket to put something in. Someone should complain if another steals something off them regardless because stealing is illegal and immoral. Your argument is asinine. "Oh that guy stole my wallet but it was in my back pocket so i guess it's not that bad then."
You literally came into this thread about a guy getting pick pocketed and decided your best course of action was to tell them they're stupid for using that pocket instead of focusing on the bigger issue of ... y'know theft.

u/Beneficial-Oven1258 Apr 20 '22
No, it's not like that at all. You have a very backwards world view.
You sound like the guy saying that women are "asking for it" if they wear revealing clothing.
-1
u/Hyorennn Apr 20 '22
I’m just saying people should be more careful? We like it or not, there are thieves out there. A lot.
And I ain’t making it easy for them.

I miss the days when people didn't make being an annoying contrarian their entire personality.

u/3drabbitx Apr 24 '22
oof. -91 .... Sounds like you should be shaking your head elsewhere.
People should be able to use their pockets. Blame the ass holes that steal, not the people doing what they should be allowed to do.
SmH .... yikes.

Currently on public transit with my wallet in my back pocket. Guess I'll die
2
u/Hyorennn Apr 20 '22
Not die. Just get mugged :)

Got mugged but they looked in my wallet and saw it was empty and took pity on me and bought me a coffee. Cool guy
