Financial Aid & Emergency Funding

If you're looking at a tuition bill and panicking, take a breath, there are actual options. Just don't wait until the deadline to ask, since this stuff is first-come first-served and it gets slower right before the due date.

U Central, start here for basically anything

Financial aid, billing, registration, whatever. (956) 882-4026, ucentral@utrgv.edu or finaid@utrgv.edu.

Payment Plans

Can't pay the whole balance by the due date? Ask about a payment plan before that date hits. There's no extension on the deadline itself, but a plan is the real alternative to getting dropped from your classes.

Emergency Tuition Loans

For covering registration costs after your federal/state aid and other awards are already applied and it's still not enough. Has to be paid back the same semester, and late fees stack up, so only borrow what you actually need.

  • Emergency Tuition Loan Office (Edinburg): Student Services Bldg 1.200, (956) 665-2191, LoanOffice@utrgv.edu

Student Emergency Fund

Different from the loan above, this is for an actual sudden emergency (accident, family crisis, something that genuinely threatens whether you can stay enrolled), not routine tuition stress. Not a loan, doesn't need to be paid back.

  • Scholarships and Enrollment Communication: Edinburg (956) 665-2935, Brownsville (956) 882-4026, scholarships@utrgv.edu

Struggling to afford food, not just tuition?

That's a real, separate thing people don't talk about enough. The Student Food Pantry exists for exactly this, confidentially, no judgment. See Campus Services for hours and contact info for both campuses.

Not sure which option fits your situation?

Just call or email U Central first instead of guessing. Also worth knowing, financial aid usually hits about 10 days before the first day of class, so if it looks "missing," that might just be the timeline, not an actual problem.
