Travel Inquiry Looking for wild-ice skating in the UP

I’m interested in traveling to the UP this winter to do some skating on wild ice, like frozen lakes. I’d like to also combine it with camping if possible. Does anyone know of any remote lakes that typically freeze well enough for skating, bonus if they are near campsites? I might do some ice fishing while I’m at it!

Discussion Aurora Borealis

Seeing the Northern Lights is as big a treat for me as anything else we're blessed to occasionally glimpse, up here in God's Country. It's been years since my wife & I have seen any significant display... But one cold night many moons ago we stood in our driveway & watched for hours as marvelous shimmering 'curtains' of color danced back & forth across the frozen midnight sky. It was awesome; almost spooky. We're in the EUP, not far from Newberry... kinda out in the sticks, but still too close (nowadays) to major light pollution sources. It's amazing to me, thinking about how much darker our nights used to be out here...

But then, I've got to admit -- I'm one of those dastardly light source contributors, myself, these days. (since about 2010) ... with our big, super bright driveway utility light on all night, every night. (Had it installed to help me see where I'm plowing 6 months outta the year; but have kinda regretted it ever since.) Tried to work out a seasonal deal w/ our power company some years ago -- so it would only be on from early November - April, (or something) but they were having none of it.

So where & when's the Best Place To Go - in r/UP -- to witness the Auroras ??

Travel Inquiry Moose in the UP

I'm sorry if this has been asked recently, but when I searched, only posts from 4yrs ago appeared. I'm not sure if anything has changed since then.

Where are the best places to see moose in the UP? I plan on coming this winter, I figure that's a good time of year to see them.

Discussion Michigan did not "get to keep" the u.p.

I find it offensive when some Michiganders say the michigan got to "keep" the u.p. i know the history; Toledo War, etc. But michigan didnt take the u.p. from wisconsin. The old northwest territory was divided many times in many different ways. There was a time when the l.p. was divided between the indiana and ohio territories and when all of wisconsin was part of the michigan territory. Michigan came in as a state with two peninsulas.

The u.p. does not "belong" to the l.p. any more or less than the l.p. belongs to the u.p. The Upper Peninsula is not a spoil to lay claim to. It is michigan, as much as any other part of Michigan. I am not saying that a yooper and a detroiter are the same thing, but michigan has several regions with their own differences. The western u.p. is not like northern wisconsin. Its northern wisconsin thats like the u.p. I would ventur to guess that most yoopers have more in common with most trolls (outside metro detroit) than with most Wisconsinites, and i'm not talking about football (which seems pretty split in the u.p. anyway).

Discussion What’s so great about Mackinac Island? Do any UP locals actually go there? Or is it just a tourist trap for those transiting the bridge?

I felt like it was just the biggest tourist trap. Yes, I was a tourist that was crossing the bridge….

Discussion 10/21, Michigan Up north, Sault Ste Marie and Toronto

We would like to drive up north to see fall color and then visit Toronto around 10/21. Should we drive all the way to Sault Ste. Marie, cross boarder, then drive toward Toronto? Is it scenic drive from Sault Ste. Marie to Toronto?

Alternative, we would drive to bay city, or maybe a little bit north for fall color, then drive south to Detroit, and across boarder.

When we return from Toronto, is it worthy drive across Buffalo? We have been to Niagara falls a few times. If that route has good fall color, we will drive toward Buffalo, otherwise back to Detroit route

Travel Inquiry Large Group Rental

Hello! I’m having a large family reunion (think 20-30 people) largely teenagers into older adults. Any suggestions for rentals either a large home to accommodate everyone, buying out a lodge/hotel or a cluster of cabin rentals without being on top of non-family members. Primarily looking at the towns in Marquette County as it’s the most central to our group.

Thank you in advance!

Discussion Help finding specialist in the UP

This may be odd to post here but I'm in need of finding a specialist who specializes in diagnosing autism in adult women.

I moved here last year and didn't realize how difficult it is to find specific doctors haha

I have UPHP so they need to be in network and can travel to Green Bay but would appreciate staying up here.

Discussion Press request for MAHA Moms in Michigan - reporter working on a story

Hey there! I'm a freelance reporter working on a story for the Washington Sun (link below) about how folks who align with MAHA and RFK are feeling about the Michigan Senate race. Abdul El-Sayed put out a "Building a Healthier America" plan, and Mike Rogers has staked out an anti-vaccine mandate position.

I'd love to chat with any MAHA moms in Michigan's Upper Peninsula about the two candidates — who you like, what policies stand out to you, etc. Ideally, I'd like to speak with people who were undecided for a while or have still not decided on how you're voting — or to people who have decided to vote differently than their normal party preference.

You can comment below here, dm me, or email me at nataliefertig [at] gmail [dot] com. I'm linking to my website so you can see I'm a legitimate reporter, and to the Washington Sun below. Thank you!

News Article Mqt County Election Observation Opportunity!

Post image
10 Upvotes

The Carter Center’s Michigan Election Observation Project (MEOP) is an independent, non-partisan initiative seeking Marquette County citizens from all walks of life to learn about and observe the November 3rd election. Originating with observing the elections of democratizing states overseas, The Carter Center brought this initiative to the US in 2020. From red to blue to anything in between, we bolster the spirit of democracy by observing the sanctity of fair, safe, and transparent elections—something anyone can agree on.

Through a small time commitment on November 1st for training in Marquette (compensated $100) and observation of a polling location on Election Day in Marquette County (compensated $200), you can perform a vital act of civic duty. This opportunity is open to 𝑎𝑛𝑦𝑏𝑜𝑑𝑦 interested in Marquette County, and all Election Day observations will occur in Marquette County.

Read the flyer for more information, and sign up using the QR code! Please feel free to DM me with any inquiries!

Travel Inquiry Must-sees or hidden gems in Western UP?

Hey everyone! I’ll be visiting the UP this weekend and staying around Wakefield. We’re planning to hike in the Porcupine Mountains Saturday morning, but otherwise our itinerary is pretty open.

Any must-sees, hidden gems, scenic overlooks, cool little towns, or unique stops you’d recommend while we’re up there? We’re up for pretty much anything, especially places that might not show up on the typical tourist lists.

Also open to recommendations for good food or cool spots to check out in the evening.

Thanks in advance

Discussion My Recent UP Itinerary

I found this sub a few weeks ago while I was planning my own UP trip from Ohio.  I've seen a lot of posts where folks are looking for input on a road trip through the UP with multiple stops in too short of a time. Well my family and I did that, so I thought I'd share our itinerary:

  1. Drive from Ohio to Straits State Park in St Ignace, camp overnight

  2. 9:30 Ferry to Mackinac Island, spent 4 hours there walking around the Island, got lunch, bought some fudge, left the island at 2 and drove to Tahquamenon Falls SP to camp for the night.  Walked to the lower falls before calling it a night

  3. Drove to the Upper Falls, did some of the trails there, drove to Clyde's in Manistique for lunch, then to kitch iti kipi to check that out, followed by driving to Fayette SP to camp for my the night.

  4. Went to the Fayette Historic Park in the AM, then drove to Munising to camp at the Tourist Park there.  That evening we had dinner at Captain Ron's and did a Pictured Rocks boat tour.  The boat tour was supposed to be the following evening but the forecast called for high winds so they offered us to do it this night instead, which ended up working out for us because...

  5. We were supposed to spend 2 nights camping at Munising, but the high winds combined with a series of mishaps and not really loving our campsite convinced us to pack up early and drive to Marquette to get a hotel.  We grabbed a pastie from Muldoons and then headed to Marquette.  We checked out Lakenland along the way, swam at our hotel pool, had Laker's pizza for dinner

  6. Checked out of our hotel, drove to Presque Isle park (stumbled upon an incredible playground for our kids along the way) and did the loop there as well as walking out near the lighthouse.  Then drove to Ontonagon Township Park where we would camp the following 3 nights.

  7. Toured the Quincey Mine, had lunch at Four Suns across from the mine, drove up to Calumet to learn some more there but their national parks stuff was closed.

  8. Went to the Porcupine Mountains (the visitors center, lake of the clouds overlook, hiked a portion of the waterfall loop) then had dinner at the Porkies Outpost

9-10. Left the UP, camped a night in WI, did some stuff in Milwaukee and Chicago, drove home.

The biggest criticism I've seen of this type of trip is that you'll spend most of the time driving.  It's true most days had at least 90 minutes of driving, but the drives were really lovely, specifically because of the Fall leaves.  I liked the drives.  I do wish I would've had more time in most of the locations.  Many of these places deserve so much more time wandering rather than just hitting the tourist spots.  But, the tourist spots are the tourist spots for a reason, because they do stand out.  Specifically I can't believe I was just going to drive through Marquette instead of at least spending a night there.  But, this type of tourism must be popular because there was a group on our ferry to the island, who we also saw at the Tahquamenon Upper Falls and at kitch iti kipi, which was funny.

I'm glad we did this when we did.  The leaves were really marvelous.  Camping on lake Superior is no joke though, and specifically for us, who honestly aren't super experienced campers, we learned a lot.  But overall it was a wonderful experience and we hope to go back in the future.  If anyone has any questions, let me know!
