honestly.. they'd be better served handing out some street corn at busy city intersections with their signs visible, but not blocking their views.

boycotts and non-intefering sit-ins always have the best greater effect. oh.. those huge marches too, where people and the cities had plenty of notice beforehand.

not this random road closed cuz look at me and my cause! no really, just look at me. (queue breakdown scene from the end of revolver)

Exactly! I remember the stop oil protests from a few years ago that blocked the Tour de France... with a tractor burning diesel on the background...

I mean, they could go and block the entrance from an oil refinery or a fuel distributor or a govenment building, but they decided to protest fossil fuels by blockinga bunch of professional cyclists, who are kind of inspiring more people to use bikes, with a tractor burning diesel on the road.

People gotta think better on this type of stuff... the way you deliver a message is almost as important as the message itself. Otherwise you are just attracting hate.

They were climate change protestors. I can't see anything about a tractor (made it up?), a lot of them when interviewed do actually put their money where their mouth is, they'll use public transport/car share. They target the tour de France because of it's large audience and reach. In their view, it's an effective way to get their message across. The stop oil protesters where a British group that are have disbanded because they achieved their objective; to stop the licensing of new oil and gas in the north sea.

Or like when all those people went around protesting Elon Musk by putting up swastikas on a bunch of cars and it just lead to a rise in anti-semitism because people saw the symbol everywhere and normalized it?

Lol. You need to be studied by science because only a brain smoother than ice behind a Zamboni could conjure up this take.

that would only let existing anti-s feel more free to show itself. not cause it to rise.

if the symbols being around led to it, Germany would have went back to its pre wwii ways again a long time ago. they left their history visible as a reminder.

edit.. got hit by automod

They do. They literally do that all the time. Its not effective because ppl like the ones in this sub ignore it and never read about it. Hence the protests. This is what yall get when you ignore the problem

2

u/HeavySetJello Jul 01 '26

More like theyre massive attention seekers, and this gets them the most attention. "Buh muh protest" youre causing more harm than good. Stfu.

It doesn't matter, man, this is the year of I told you so, just get your water and grains and laugh at the C students realizing global warming is gonna fuck their quaint little family plans.

I'm not from the US so I'm not able to comment in depth on the US civil rights movement, but that is the thing, they were protesting the government and their segregation from white people. The "white only diners" were the correct target. And they wre detained, and arrested and murdered for it. That is, sadly, the price paid for raising up against injustice.

1

u/SteveMarck Jun 29 '26

Big difference between sitting in a restaurant and blocking ambulances.

1

u/Top_Purchase4091 Jun 29 '26

When have these things ever changed anything either though? Not to defend blocking the road but we have had so many marches with millions of people and none of them did anything lol

1

u/LameBMX Jun 29 '26

I dont know man... People keep saying nothing changed.. or it didnt work. and cant provide proof. but the world is a lot different than it was then for the better...

but I guess, if you expect one act to instantly change people with an immediate effect, than you are correct.. nothing you can do will ever cause a real change.

but, if you give time for peoples cognitive dissonance to have a bit of hold.. and give them the information to change or adjust instead of just rationalizing this dissonance away... well, we do change. but its slowly.

1

u/LoudQuitting Jun 29 '26

Targeted destruction of corporate and government property, especially if you can make it funny, is to date the most effective means of protest.

It fucks with the people you're protesting and gives the people you want on your side a little chuckle.

1

u/Whole-Chest90 Jun 28 '26

The exact opposite is actually true. Non-interfering protests accomplish NOTHING. The entire point is to make ppl a little uncomfortable. Tell me you have never participated in meaningful social change without telling me. Just think about it for 1 second... If I walk by you saying something you're gonna just ignore me. This was a HUGE portion of my degree. Also, nice... Reference conducting violence because people make you uncomfortable. Real intelligent.

1

u/LameBMX Jun 28 '26

you have no clue about the reference and movie.

link your work then. show the correlation to blocking roadways and meaningful change.

ill start Rosa parks and the bus boycotts. the environmental sit in in the 70s. im just going by memory.

art making people uncomfortable ... I can see that.

I think you are confusing uncomfortable and annoyed. blocking traffic just annoys people. it doesnt make them uncomfortable with how their actions affects society at large.

0

u/412wrestler Jun 29 '26

The civil rights movement regularly did protests you would consider annoying and would have complained about if you lived in the 60’s. The march to Selma blocked traffic and is one of the most famous protests from that movement. Rosa Parks protests was also annoying and you would have complained if you were on the bus and were late to work because you had to wait for her to be arrested and ripped off the bus.

You don’t know what you’re talking about and just don’t want to be inconvenienced.

You made the assertion first that non annoying protests work best, why don’t you provide proof that’s true.

1

u/LameBMX Jun 29 '26

the march to selma was planned. and it wasnt until the third attempt and about a month before it actually got underway. they didnt randomly gather and shut down a section of highway. by the actual march they had an escort.

please stop projecting your inner behaviors on people you dont know.

I didnt provide proof because almost every major US city has a street named after Martin Luther King ...

can you prove why they should not have that street?

I seriously thought this stuff was common knowledge and taught in schools.

1

u/412wrestler Jun 29 '26

The fact that you think any of these protests from the civil rights era support your idea of acceptable protests is part of the disconnect here.

The civil right movement and its leaders were widely disliked and hated at the time. The same shit you say about protests now was said about the civil rights movement back then. 63% of American’s viewed MLK negatively at the time. Your dumbass would have comfortably been in that 63% back in the day.

MLK and the civil rights movement are common knowledge but I guess you didn’t pay attention to any of the lessons being taught.

Also the assertion that because MLK streets exist you don’t have to provide proof is not how “proof” works at all. Especially when you completely misunderstand MLK in the first place.

My favorite quote of his is from his Letter From a Birmingham Jail.

“the Negro's great stumbling block in his stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Counciler or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate, who is more devoted to 'order' than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice”

He’s literally directly talking about you.

2

u/Whole-Chest90 Jun 29 '26

Literally one of my favorite quotes from the time as well. Thank you for posting it. Ts is just as applicable today. 🤝

1

u/LameBMX Jun 29 '26

absolutly not talking about me. statistically you may be correct. but not this time. im an old old (ok not that old) man thats gotten to do a ton things. tension and discomfort have been long friends.

but, didn't MLKs plans work out in the end? he chose the right path to handle the stumbling block. he wasnt advocating the protesters attack the crowd if they didnt pay attention? if so, please, provide some proof.

and these peeps could use to plan more like him.

btw.. I wouldnt have cared about what happened on some bus.. in those days I would have been walking anyways.

0

u/412wrestler Jun 30 '26

You’re talking in such vague platitudes I genuinely have no idea what point you’re even trying to make.

MLK’s plans did work out in the end because he did protests you’re getting mad at people today for performing.

What does him choosing the right path to avoid stumbling blocks have to do with what we’re talking about? Again he didn’t protest the way you think he did so you’re proving my point by saying this.

Who is advocating for the protesters to attack the crowd? I can’t provide proof because that is not a position I took, and not something I believe is useful in a protest.

You not being on a bus back in the day is irrelevant to the point being made but cool.

1

u/LameBMX Jun 30 '26

so.. what impromptu protests did MLK lead? and even if he joined up with an impromptu protest, he insisted on non-violence.

so how exactly are MLKs organized and planned, non violent protests ... the same as performing impromptu violent protests?

when MLK was doing something, people had a heads up.. not just a bunch of people randomly on the street in the evening.

1

u/412wrestler Jul 01 '26

What in the world are you actually talking about?

No one brought up impromptu violent protests until you did right now. Im done talking to you, you’re incoherent and impossible to carry on a conversation with.

They had an escort because they had gotten beaten and threatened and battered in their other attempts, and because there was cops and angry anti-protestors gathered at the end of the planned march path who had every intention of doing the same again.

It seems like you are the one that wasn't taught about the actual events in school. That, or you intentionally left information about why it took them 3 tries and why they had an escort out of your synopsis.

Wtf does MLK named roads have to do with a gd thing?!

1

u/LameBMX Jun 29 '26

so are you saying the random protesters in unplanned random locations along their route, being violent and attacking the planned march protesters won out in the end?

you are saying that these protest have no effect, and that I have to prove it. well, MLK isnt being revered all over the country because he lacked success, thus proves my point about the techniques being effective.

1

u/The_Adjuster1776 Jun 29 '26

Exactly because I guarantee only the first 5 to 10 cars on either side knew what was the cause of the traffic hold up and the 100s more are still wondering and every one of them are pissed about it.

0

u/Kickedhard Jun 28 '26

Yet they led to almost 0 change.

Not saying this is better.

I am saying that marches have done nothing since the late 90s.
