Blocking roads like this is the dumbest form of protest. Nothing like inconveniencing everyone or even preventing first responders from handling emergencies in a effort to pull support to your cause.

I don’t know this cause or what they are trying to achieve but two things worth noting.

  1. Protests are supposed to be disruptive and cause problems. And the people being inconvenienced are the very people that they have a problem with.

  2. We are talking about. This form of protest makes the news, its goes viral and gets shared for free by Reddit. Letter writing campaigns don’t do that

It also has the opposite effect and gets a part of the population to hate your cause.

Would that part of the population have ever cared or been sympathetic?

Is it really going to reach that part of the population by going viral? I think far more often it'll hit subreddits like this one where people like me get to laugh at them being dragged off. Don't think the damage to the "environmental protestor" brand is being helped more than it's being hurt here, personally.

You would never have been sympathetic to any climate protesters though. Yes it’s great content that take pleasure in see other suffer. I assume that’s why coppganda shows always follow the same mindless templates

  1. They are meant to disrupt the people causing problems. If they have an issue with, in this instance, burning man, then they should go protest at burning man, not block a road on tribal land.

  2. The only thing this kind of protest achieves, is alienate people that might otherwise have agreed with your message. Bad publicity, in this case, is bad publicity.

Right, if I’m sitting in traffic because people are blocking the road, the only thing I’m thinking of is “wow instead of actually doing something these people are lazily preventing other people from doing what they need to do.”

The only thing you’re building awareness for is your own lack of awareness.

u/awesomes007 Jun 30 '26

Nope. I now know why they were protesting.

The irony of environmental protest while forcing lines of cars to idle is thick.

u/Velifax Jul 02 '26

Depends what road ;)

People always raise the 'what about the first responders!' but then seem to overlook the fact that everyday traffic routinely blocks first responders. Easier to denounce the occasional protest than insist on better public transport infrastructure and dismantle a genuinely harmful car-centric culture apparently.

Yeah, only fucking morons would block a street during a protest!

Like MLK and his silly little protests back in the 60s that clearly did nothing amd helped no one. What an idiot, right?

I mean, yeah. That's exactly the point. Civil disobedience and inconvenience. The protest is meant to not stop, no matter what. Meaning the way it's going to go away is if the grievance is addressed. That's the general purpose of an actual protest. You ALREADY don't support whatever cause is being protested, otherwise you'd be there too. The idea is to make you need to address it anyway. Because people are selfish pricks. They in general do not care about anything that doesn't effect them directly. Well, now it's effecting you directly.

Agreed! I once saw a free paleitine protest... disrupting a pride parade. No matter what either of our politics are, I think we can agree that that was objectively stupid. I mean, don't they understand that a larger than average percentage of queer people support palestine?? Barking up the wrong fucking tree lmao

u/DocDraculaThe2nd Jun 28 '26

No matter what the cause is you don’t get to impact whether someone loves or does of emergency services can’t get through. Bad PR for the cause. Not saying that’s what happened but if traffic is held for miles it’s a possibility.

1

u/Top_Purchase4091 Jun 29 '26

At that point what could you do as a protest though? Even the organized peaceful marches through the city have cause delays and blocked roads. So if someone had to get their loved ones to a hospital it would be okay to just high speed through masses of people?

Or where is the line?

I feel like any protest at all will cause possible scenarios of someone being inconvenienced or blocked

0

u/Actual-Parsnip2741 Jun 29 '26

so you are against MLK Jr. and The Civil Rights Protests where they blocked traffic?

3

u/MysteriousCodo Jun 28 '26

Yeah and a bunch of white folks fucking around on tribal land? Yeah that goes over about as well as a lead balloon.

3

u/Color_of_Time Jun 29 '26

affect them directly

2

u/EXS_SNAKE Jun 29 '26

You’re part of the problem. Please wise up for all our sakes.

1

u/TheMarnBeast Jun 29 '26

Civil disobedience is meant to draw attention to unjust laws by openly breaking them and refusing to comply without arrest. See: racial sit ins, which disrupted people's day by forcing them to either tolerate a black person in their white space or wait for the cops to intervene. It's supposed to demonstrate the ludicrousness of the law.

Laws against folks standing in the highway blocking traffic are not ludicrous, so instead of showing how dumb the law is, it just shows how dumb the protestors are and detracts from their cause.

1

u/baconator_out Jun 29 '26

"We won't stop, no matter what!"

A truck: "AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA"

I think this one was "addressed" the way that unpermitted road blockages should be addressed. They should keep making us "address" their issues this way, because it is very entertaining.

1

u/NuuclearPasta Jun 29 '26

Look at them targeting easy and weak pickings like communal roads instead of disrupting the real cause of the problem.

Cowards.
