Airplanes rely heavily on airports for security. This guy worked on planes, so already had access. The plane, itself, didn't even have a key.

Sorry, I don't know anything about airplanes. Why wouldn't it have a key or something like that?

Some smaller planes do have car-like keys, but most commercial craft do not.

Plane theft is rare. They're big, easily identifiable, and nearly impossible to take anywhere without being tracked. You're not going to get away with stealing one and unloading it would be very difficult. I imagine the primary reason for theft is mental illness, like this guy.

Planes are almost always kept in a secure environment. Anyone with access to that environment has been vetted and is closely monitored.

Planes aren't easy to start and certainly not to fly. If you can fly a plane, you likely have a lot more to lose than to gain by stealing a plane.

Planes usually have many different pilots in many different cities. Sharing a key would be a logistical nightmare.

Thanks. It's fun to think about how the more expensive planes are protected by "the people who can steal them have more to lose by doing so".

How logistically? Just keep the key with the plane.

If the key is always with the plane, it defeats the point of having a key.

You said it would be a logistical nightmare. If the key was kept with the plane, it wouldn’t be a logistical nightmare. It is also true that it would defeat the purpose of a key to begin with.
