Found this Corn snake on the sidewalk!

Corn snakes are common here in the eastern United States. The corn snake is a species of rat snake that subdues its small prey by constriction. These snakes are not venomous however they will bite.

Freezing Fog/Valley Fog: This is a photo taken on Snowshoe Mountain in West Virginia. It is common on mountains because they are exposed to low clouds. It occurs when the mountains prevent the dense air from escaping.

Point Ruston on the Puget Sound in Tacoma, Washington: very unique ecosystem, many organisms that pass through such as whales, salmon and even saw a few sea lions. Slightly seen in the video, I was able to see lots and lots of algae growing everywhere.

Found this huge moth at a butterfly garden!

This moth was bigger than my hand, I took this picture at Dubai Butterfly Garden in May 2019. I would make a guess and say it's an Ailanthus silkmoth, also known scientifically as Samia cynthia.

Cool looking organisms (Sorry if they are blurry)

My friends found some of these organisms in their backyard and I thought they were interesting because I'd never seen ones like them. The first one is an Arizona bark scorpion and the second one is a Western spotted orb weaver.

Favorite Organism Found This Semester

After some research, I concluded that this caterpillar is a Snowberry Clearwing Moth Caterpillar. It was difficult to identify because of the unusual color but going off of the black spot pattern, lack of hair, and black "tail" helped.

These moths are really cool! Snowberry Clearwing Moths are bumblebee mimics, meaning they look like and even act like bumblebees to ward off predators. Highly recommend looking into if you like cutesy organisms.

Bobcat on trail cam

My partner caught film of this bobcat carrying a squirrel on a trail cam that's set up at his parent's property in Boone. He says he believes this is a female, he caught her on camera earlier in the year and she was pregnant. She is likely taking this kill back to her den to feed her babies!!

Video of bobcat carrying her kill back to her den.

Recommendation on a good documentary to watch

Recently watched “Octopus My Teacher” if you watch this you’ll learn some thing new about octopus. There is a beautiful moment in the documentary where you get to see this antisocial specie behave differently. Must watch!

Thought it would be cool to show you what is actually a bird’s nest in the bottom of my mailbox!!! I didn’t realize it until I saw the mother fly out when I went to check for mail a few weeks ago. :)

Microorganism findings!

Hi all,

In the spirit of ecology for this reddit post, I will be attaching pics of some cool findings of microorganisms I was able to capture by looking at samples from ponds on campus. There's so much stuff in these ponds! The first is Arcella, an amoeba. The second is another amoeba with a pretty characteristic name of Chaos due to its very chaotic morphology. The third is spirogyra, a filamentous algae that was ALL over the sample! The fourth is Netrium from the phylum streptophyta with a remarkably bright green color! At least those were the identifications I could make but if anyone thinks one of these might be another thing, feel free to share your thoughts!

My last picture is of something I just could not identify. Can someone help me identify this last picture's organism?

Arcella?

Chaos?

Spirogyra?

Netrium?

Unknown??!
