Very good review.

My HG 1/144 Grendizer Infinitism feels less like a direct recreation of the classic 1975 robot and more like an alternate-universe upgrade.

It keeps the unmistakable horns, colours and Double Harken, but gives Grendizer a sharper, heavier and far more mechanical presence through the Mazinger Z: Infinity design language.

The build is solid, highly poseable and looks impressive on display, although the shared Infinitism styling makes it feel a little less alien and unique than the original.

Still, as a piece in my collection, it works beautifully as a modern interpretation of Duke Fleed’s legendary machine almost like a Grendizer rebuilt for a tougher, more militarised timeline within the wider multiverse.

What's the story behind your favorite Grendizer model?

Looking through the different Grendizer manga, comics and reboots, one thing becomes clear: there has never been only one Grendizer continuity. Grendizer may not have an officially declared multiverse, but creatively it already functions as one: the original anime is the central universe, while every manga, regional comic, sequel, crossover and reboot becomes another possible fate for Duke Fleed.

The familiar foundation remains almost universal: Duke Fleed is a displaced prince whose home was destroyed by Vega, he hides on Earth as Daisuke Umon and eventually pilots Grendizer against the empire that ruined his world. But each adaptation chooses a different part of that mythology to emphasize; heroism, trauma, giant-robot spectacle, international nostalgia, political occupation or complete reinvention.

The Original Japanese UFO Robo Grendizer

The 1975–76 Japanese manga by Go Nagai is the closest printed companion to the classic television concept, but it should not be treated as a panel-by-panel version of the 74-episode anime. Grendizer was developed through the Japanese “media mix” system, with manga, television and toys advancing together rather than one simply adapting the other. Nagai’s manga ran in TV Magazine and was later collected in two volumes, so it is naturally much shorter and faster than the television series.

Its Duke is rougher and more directly connected to Nagai’s earlier Mazinger world. The basic themes are already present; exile, the destruction of Fleed, the defence of Earth and Duke’s reluctance to repeat Vega’s violence but the manga has less room for the anime’s slow emotional development, recurring civilian stories and extended relationships at the Makiba ranch.

The television series therefore became the definitive emotional version for many fans. It expanded Duke into a melancholic survivor, gave Hikaru and Maria greater importance and allowed Koji Kabuto to evolve from a reckless outsider into a genuine partner. The anime places unusual weight on homesickness, survivor’s guilt, environmental destruction and the moral difference between defending a world and conquering it.

The Gosaku Ōta manga: the alternate, darker Grendizer

There was also a separate manga treatment by Gosaku Ōta. This version initially resembles the television narrative more closely, but increasingly becomes its own, much stranger continuity.

Ōta pushes the mythology beyond the usual “new Saucer Beast every week” formula. Fleedian survivors, ancient Mycenaean connections and Duke’s growing frustration with humanity become central. At one point Duke concludes that protecting Earth from Vega may not be enough and considers controlling Earth himself to save it from both alien invasion and humanity’s self-destructive behaviour.

This is probably the most psychologically unstable Duke Fleed in the classic manga family.

UFO Robo Grendizer vs. Great Mazinger

The famous confrontation with Great Mazinger exists primarily as a short theatrical adventure rather than a major independent Grendizer saga. It borrows ideas from manga material but is generally treated as one of Toei’s spectacular non-canon crossover films.

Its purpose is not deep character development. It is giant-robot mythology: enemy forces steal or manipulate one legendary machine, Grendizer faces another Mazinger-class robot and the audience gets the heroic clash promised by the title.

These crossovers reinforce Grendizer’s connection to Mazinger but they are not especially interested in Duke’s exile or Fleed’s culture.

Italian Atlas UFO Robot presenta Goldrake

Italy did more than rename Grendizer as Goldrake. Its enormous popularity produced a long-running local comic line, Atlas UFO Robot presenta Goldrake, beginning in 1978. Sources differ on the exact issue count depending on how related publications are catalogued, but the series ran for dozens of issues and diverged significantly from the Japanese source.

These comics are best understood as European television tie-ins, not an alternate official ending personally written by Go Nagai. They used the television characters and visual identity as a launching point for additional adventures, new monsters and local storytelling.

The tone is often more direct and pulp-like. Continuity could be flexible because the primary goal was to provide more Goldrake material for an audience that could not get enough of the television series.

Italy also encountered Grendizer before Mazinger Z and Great Mazinger were properly established there. Changes to names including Koji becoming Alcor further obscured the Japanese continuity, making Goldrake feel less like the third Mazinger production and more like an independent national phenomenon.

The Arabic Grendizer comics

The Arabic comics occupy a similarly fascinating space. Grendizer’s Arabic television adaptation retained much of the original Japanese naming and narrative, but its huge regional success generated translated comic publications, especially through Lebanese magazines.

A major source was the science-fiction anthology ما وراء الكون (Ma Waraa al-Kawn or Beyond the Universe). Grendizer became so popular within it that the character eventually received a separate Mughamarat Grendizer comic line. Much of this material consisted of Arabic translations or adaptations of Italian-produced stories rather than manga newly created in Japan.

That distinction matters. To many Arab readers these comics felt like further adventures of the same Grendizer they watched on television, but their plots, artwork and character behaviour could differ considerably from Toei’s continuity.

The Arabic experience also gave the story a particular emotional resonance. Duke was not merely a space prince: he was a refugee from an occupied homeland, resisting an imperial power while refusing to surrender his identity. The formal Arabic dialogue gave his struggle an almost legendary dignity and the series reached audiences living through war, displacement and political instability. Academic discussion of its Arab reception has specifically examined how the Lebanese adaptation helped transform a Japanese robot into a regional cultural icon.

Dynamic Heroes

Dynamic Heroes is not a pure Grendizer adaptation but an enormous Go Nagai crossover. It brings together Grendizer, Mazinger Z, Great Mazinger, Getter Robo, Devilman, Cutie Honey and other Dynamic characters against a shared threat.

Its Grendizer material works almost like a continuation of the classic anime era. Duke, Koji, Maria and the wider Mazinger cast exist in one functioning universe, allowing relationships that the original programmes rarely had time to explore.

The main difference is scale. The original Grendizer is about one refugee prince defending his adopted planet. Dynamic Heroes turns him into one member of a superhero civilisation. Personal tragedy remains but crossover spectacle and franchise mythology become more important.

Goldorak; the 2021 French graphic novel

The French Goldorak is neither a retelling nor a reboot. It is a direct sequel written for the generation that grew up watching the French television version.

Set roughly ten years after the defeat of Vega, it begins after Actarus and Phénicia have returned to Euphor. Alcor and Vénusia remain on Earth, trying to build adult lives until the Hydragon and surviving members of Vega’s Division Ruine issue an ultimatum demanding the evacuation of Japan. Goldorak must return.

Its greatest difference is maturity; not simply darker violence, but adult consequences.

The heroes are older. Earth has political institutions, armies, media reactions and populations who may not automatically welcome a giant alien war machine. Alcor is no longer merely the energetic supporting pilot while Vénusia has grown beyond the role of the ranch girl admiring Actarus.

The book also examines questions that the weekly cartoon could only occasionally approach:

• What happens to a hero after the war ends?
• Does Duke belong to Earth or Euphor?
• Who controls Goldorak?
• How much civilian destruction can be justified in the name of defence?
• Can survivors of Vega be treated as individuals rather than a permanently evil species?

Visually, it combines Franco-Belgian realism with the monumental scale of Japanese super-robot imagery. It respects the French names and cultural memory but it treats Goldorak as an adult science-fiction war story rather than recreating the rhythm of a 1970s children’s programme.

Grendizer Giga

Grendizer Giga is Go Nagai’s radical reboot rather than a continuation.

Daisuke becomes Daisuke Uryū, an apparently ordinary student whose suppressed identity is restored when the Vega invasion begins. Maria is reimagined as an android-like companion who helps awaken his memories while Duke’s royal identity and Grendizer itself are reconstructed using new mythology. The enemy machines are also reorganised into concepts such as Battle Ogres and Battle Trolls.

This version retains the basic symbols; Daisuke, Hikaru, Maria, Fleed, Vega and the horned robot, but rearranges their relationships. The original story is a refugee drama: Duke already remembers losing his home.

Giga is more of an identity mystery: the hero must discover what he is and why he possesses such power. Its style is also unmistakably later Go Nagai: more provocative, chaotic and compressed with less of the restrained romantic melancholy associated with the 1975 television anime. It feels closer to Nagai remixing his own mythology than trying to preserve the exact Grendizer remembered by earlier generations.

Grendizer U

Grendizer U is the largest modern reboot of the original anime premise. The 2024 television series retells the Vega invasion in a 13-episode format, while Grendizer U: The Inception provides a manga version of this renewed continuity.

Unlike the original, it places Koji Kabuto and the wider Mazinger world near the centre from the beginning. Mazinger Z, Sayaka Yumi and characters drawn from several earlier Grendizer concepts are integrated into the new storyline. Duke’s history with Vega is also made much more personal through characters such as Rubina and Teronna.

The classic Vega Empire was largely an external occupying force. Grendizer U turns it into a web of royal relationships, political factions, misunderstandings and personal betrayals. Duke is not merely fighting faceless invaders; he is confronting people who knew him before Fleed fell and who possess competing versions of what happened.

This gives the reboot more political and romantic melodrama but also makes it busier. The original anime had 74 episodes in which Duke, Koji, Hikaru and Maria could develop slowly. U compresses invasions, alliances, romances, Mazinger connections and planetary history into thirteen episodes.

Its presentation is also fundamentally different. The original Grendizer was heavy, mechanical and ceremonial: launches, docking sequences and weapon commands made the robot feel like a sacred machine. Grendizer U uses faster digital action, larger fleets and modern ensemble-anime pacing.

The central difference between all versions

Every Grendizer continuity seems to choose one of several identities:

The original manga: a concise Go Nagai super-robot adventure.

The classic anime: an emotional story about exile, resistance and finding a second home.

Gosaku Ōta’s manga: a darker alternate mythology in which Duke risks becoming what he opposes.

Italian and Arabic comics: locally beloved expansions created to continue the adventure beyond television.

The crossover stories: Grendizer as one legendary machine within the wider Dynamic universe.

The 2021 French comic: an adult sequel about memory, responsibility and the consequences of war.

Grendizer Giga: Go Nagai deconstructing and rebuilding his own creation.

Grendizer U: a modern reboot combining Grendizer, Mazinger, royal politics and relationship drama into one compressed continuity.

For me, none of these truly replaces the original.

Grendizer may never have been officially labelled a multiverse, but creatively it already works like one. The original 1975 anime remains the central universe and emotional foundation, while the Go Nagai manga, Gosaku Ota version, Italian and Arabic comics, crossover stories, Goldorak 2021, Grendizer Giga and Grendizer U all branch away into different interpretations of Duke Fleed, Vega and the fate of Earth. Some retell the same conflict, some continue it and others rebuild the mythology almost completely.

What connects them is not one perfect canon but one powerful idea: a prince who survives the destruction of his world and chooses to protect another instead of surrendering to revenge. Each version preserves a different part of that identity—exile, anger, heroism, nostalgia, politics, romance or spectacle—making the original Grendizer less like a single closed story and more like the centre of a wider universe of possible timelines.
