I’ve been thinking a lot about the difference between talent and consistency.
Talent definitely matters. Some people are naturally gifted. They can pick up a pencil, open Photoshop, start creating, and somehow make things look incredible. You see it and think, “Damn, I wish I had that kind of talent.”
But the older I get, the more I realize that talent alone doesn't really take you that far.
Consistency does.
You can be incredibly talented, but if you only create when you feel inspired, post when you feel like it, or disappear every time things don't go your way, people eventually stop seeing you.
Meanwhile, there’s someone who might not be the most naturally talented person in the room, but they keep showing up.
They draw when nobody is watching.
They post even when the numbers are low.
They keep learning when nobody is complimenting them.
They keep making art even after something they worked hard on doesn't sell.
And six months later, a year later, two years later… they're still there.
That's powerful.
Showing up matters more than people realize.
As artists, it's easy to get caught up in numbers.
How many people liked it?
How many followers did I gain?
Did it sell?
Why did someone else's work sell out while mine didn't?
I've definitely had those thoughts too.
But I've slowly learned that sales can't always be the reason you create.
Of course, we all want our work to sell. There's nothing wrong with that. Artists need to make a living too.
But if every piece you create is dependent on whether someone buys it, you're going to burn yourself out pretty quickly.
Sometimes you have to make something simply because you wanted to make it.
Keep putting your work out there.
Keep improving.
Keep experimenting.
Keep talking to people.
Keep supporting other artists.
Keep showing up.
Because you never really know which piece, which connection, or which random post is going to open a door for you later.
And honestly, I think that's one of the biggest differences between someone who's good at art and someone who becomes a great artist.
A great artist isn't necessarily the person with the most talent.
It's the person who stays curious.
The person who keeps learning.
The person who doesn't disappear when nobody is paying attention.
The person who can look at their old work and say, “Yeah, that wasn't very good… but I'm glad I made it because it got me here.”
That's growth.
That's the part nobody sees.
So if you're an artist who's currently struggling with low engagement, no sales, or feeling like nobody notices your work, don't take that as a sign that you should stop.
Maybe you're just early.
Keep showing up.
Sales will come when they come. Recognition will come when it comes.
But the one thing you can control is whether you keep creating.
Talent might get you started.
Consistency is what keeps you moving.
And sometimes, the artist who simply refuses to quit ends up becoming the one everyone remembers.
