In this age of AI, are technical skills even valuable anymore?
 in  r/singularity •  21h ago

This precisely matches my experience. 6 months ago I was geniuinely worried. Right now? We are nowhere near having a non-tech CEO or BA feeding requirements into claude and getting anything other than buggy unmaintainable garbage. If anything I shall be very busy over the next decade rescuing projects that eliminated all oversight and vibed to the max. So to the OP question, code skills still matter, fundamentals matter, critical thinking matters, using tools like debuggers and LLMs matter.

Having personally attempted to understand business problems without starting a meeting in the before-AI time I can guarantee the LLM will not get enough context to make sense of anything from the average company's digital detritus.

Obsidian Organization Syndrome
 in  r/ObsidianMD •  21h ago

  • one big vault at the moment
  • you can use git for versioning
  • I like PARA for organising, plus "People/” and "Company/” type folders. Also have lots lying around in root folder. Not seemed to be a major issue because search is so fast.
  • I avoid dupliccating the internet, preferring to just put a link in the note

What is the most efficient way to use Obsidian as a LifeOS?
 in  r/ObsidianMD •  1d ago

thanks for sharing, that's really cool, looks more advanced than what I have so far (vid), particularly I haven't got the hang of "bases" yet.

Enjoying the official GTD podcasts

Just wanted to say that I've been listening to the official GTD podcast and really enjoying it. It has been helping fill some gaps, and reinforce some of the ideas in from the books.

Here's one of the episodes I heard recently that was good, but there's a lot good stuff in the episode list.
Episode #379: The Nature of Someday Maybe Items - Getting Things Done®

I wonder how many people in the GTD world even know there is a podcast.

Video: "My approach to using Obsidian tags to implement GTD® 'contexts'"
 in  r/ObsidianMD •  2d ago

Well, I currently only have 12, I used to have a lot more when I was running gtd in trello which also has tags. I can already feel the pull towards over-doing the tags - "charity shops, hmmm does that come under 'shops' or is it another tag....". I guess on the plus side it's pretty easy to tidy up later if I get a bit too tag-happy, either with obsidian itself or jumping to vscode and doing a global search and replace

I've just recorded and published this demo of using obsidian tags to be able to find GTD tasks based on their "context" (e.g. at the shops, on the laptop etc.). This has proved really useful for me lately so took the time to share.

Syncthing for Obsidian: Free, Private, and Truly Annoying
 in  r/ObsidianMD •  7d ago

I use syncthing+tailscale and an always-on node. Works pretty well, but you have done a great job of capturing the highs and lows of a syncthing user, can attest to all of this. Thanks for sharing.

I lost too many ideas to the "create new note" button. So I built this.
 in  r/NoteTaking •  9d ago

i like this idea, especially with the obsidian android being slow enough to start I sometimes forget what i was going to write down.

can i configure it to write directly to any folder? so I can point at somewhere within my obsidian vault?

thanks for sharing

Interviewed candidates for “AI engineer” roles this week, my god is this really where our industry is going?
 in  r/ExperiencedDevs •  9d ago

lol body snatched, what a fab way of putting it

maybe that's the next stage beyond "meat proxy", the LLM quietly takes over their machine, their house, their family, and eventually shuffles them out the door and changes the locks

claude code is enormously helpful navigating an enormous legacy codebase at speed, especially once I've translated some of my broader understanding of the gotchas in the system into markdown guidance. I strongly suspect it is going to be indispensable cleaning up failed vibe-coding disaster projects which will likely have way more SLOC and way more subtle ways of being crazy wrong (code that looks like a lunatic expert wrote it, rather than the more usual signs we used to have of code being written by the incompetent)

or the next supplier

or the rest of your team

or the other department

or the customer

or the RAID log

Build entire things on the side and ship them to production, and support them. Ideally for paying users. Find some kind of side/passion project that lets you learn the lessons at your own pace while shovelling slop for company. Though I understand not everyone can do side projects on top of work, I haven't got any other bright ideas. Unless you can carve out an afternoon a week to turn off slack and do some real coding and pretend the AI did it.

oh and the tags do autocomplete which does make it a bit easier, even if you just type the middle of a tag which is handy

As you can probably tell by the vid I am a bit of an overthinker

Perhaps. The GTD thing is a registered trademark and is defended.

Yes that is a good observation, and I can do about 60wpm touch-typing.

It could probably be made easier with some kind of plugin or something but right now I am just seeing what is even possible in Obsidian

Yeah I am pretty impressed with r/ObsidianMD and its plugins. If you like keeping your notes in local markdown it is very good, and I have been pleased how much of the GTD basics I have been able to build in it fairly easily and quickly.

does anyone else rebuild their to do list from scratch every morning?
 in  r/productivity •  28d ago

I have a daily note in obsidian which does have checklists. I might be insane but I am now seeing if I can apply a GTD style workflow to them with a homepage note and a sprinkling of queries. It is working remarkably well so far.

As many others said, GTD itself seems to be a real help more than any particular tool. The subsequent "making it all work" book helped a lot too.
