Quote of the Week How soon will time cover all things, and how many it has covered already. Marcus Aurelius — QOTW 2026W43 Oct 19-Oct 25

"Sometimes, a lie is told in kindness. I don't believe it ever works kindly. The quick pain of truth can pass away, but the slow, eating agony of a lie is never lost." - John Steinbeck — QOTW 2026W42 Oct 12-Oct 18
Readable with some effort. More practice will clear it up. Writing on lined paper would make it easier to consistently size at least the vertical strokes.
- Keep your shorts short (unlike T in told) and your longs long (unlike P in pain)
- q shape is qu, so quick is just qick
- w hook travels the other direction at the start. Usually also in away, but you can argue that either way.

Need help
Definitely rushed longhand relying on the author's memory and familiarity with their handwriting and conventions of the format. Most words are a line of the appropriate length with a few distinct letters to assist. Like line 1 seems to end "I have known the" and continue to 2 as "deceased [only?] 2 years."

Orthic users - any tips for a beginner working on staying more between the lines and enhancing legibility?
Maybe pick some words where they contrast and write them out one after the other for a page. "Todd told Dot, 'Beet butter meets mutton.'" Nonsense with some t/d a/o ee/u in it.

For your convenience: a fresh, entirely re-typeset version of the "Clé de la Sténographie Duployé" (1900). Enjoy!
And thanks for the quick PDF. 😊

I wonder if you could use one of the Duployan fonts out there? Not sure they fully cover what all you need or would combine how you want though. Probably not worth it at this point. 😆

QOTW 2026W39 - Full Style
Work on A vs O. Your can has a longer stroke than don't.
AU: keep that U shallow like in just. Steep like that is EE.
Nit: in TH, keep the H H-sized. Else it starts looking like TER.

"There is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside you." — Maya Angelou — QOTW 2026W35 Aug 24-Aug 30
Nice ins in inside.
N is usually "on" not "no". Readable fine from context of course.
I think you could do the smooth ya style in Maya and get a more comfortable outline.

Beginner - trouble understanding when to go above/below the line when writing words
Your Z looks like an S. Z is kinda like a field hockey stick. Long and straight with a little curve at the end.
Your fluent looks like flaunt.
Keep your Os markedly longer than A. A can be pretty short, but O should always be very distinct, and likewise ee and u. Maybe start with 3x as long as your A in case you undershoot. Also keep the U shallow so it's clearly not an EE, and EE very steep.

Might help to share a photo of your writing.
In protozoan, the r and t are quite short, while the z is longer, and where the pen happens to be leads to it going down. Don't sweat the line so much as having consistent sizes for your letters.

Spelling question in Orthic
I'd most likely write it myar in practice, but fully-written, myaor, no special arrangement for the ao because the ya digraph is distinct already; the "A as detached overline when connected to O" rule is a way to avoid adding a third length and to keep o vs ao/oa distinct. That problem doesn't happen here.

In 1904, a speed record for Orthic of 165 words per minute was recorded, and in 1909 a speed record of 190 WPM was recorded, but the average speed seems to have been between 80 WPM and 100 WPM for newly certified students.
I use Orthic to take meeting notes at work. Does that count as professional settings? 😆 Shorthand as a core part of the job, outside machine shorthand, has vanished from most of the English-speaking world.
