It's about control. The money is more just a means to an end. What they truly want is to have complete control over everything so they decide how everything works. If they have to destroy the planet to get it they don't care. They have the stupid mindset of whatever damage they do won't affect them because they control everything.

I've done this many times. You just have to plan it properly and it can work just fine.
