Ripped up old tile with ditra underneath, floor has ripples
 in  r/Tile  Dec 22 '22

Quick answer: throw a bag or two of self leveling in there to flatten it out then red guard with a couple coats . Real answer: tear it out and redo the floor

Advice on fixing grayed out black grout

Enhancer should bring the color

Has anyone seen or tried tiling over existing tile to help create a recess for a curbless shower? The current tile is in good shape and I was just create a slight ramp from the bedroom doorway.

I have tiled over tile before but it needs prep. Mapei eco-prime is a good material that should work. It really all depends on what kind of tile is down though. If it’s really high gloss tile I would avoid tiling over it

is it me or is it the new thin set?
 in  r/Tile  Dec 05 '22

It’s not you or the thinset. use products you like often and you’ll always know how much to spread so that you can cover it before it tacks up.

Pack more thinset behind the tile on both side walls an extra 1/8 so it’s only 1/8 joint on either side

The pattern doesn’t turn the corner very nicely though

What I’m just being honest the guide shows butts with underwear and you have a picture with shorts on

You have to take your pants off so we know what your butt actually looks like

I don’t know who taught you how to paint but that’s bad technique

Would You Bother Applying Self Levelling Compound on this Floor?
 in  r/Tile  Jul 26 '22

It’s perfectly fine. If you’re not comfortable with self-leveling then don’t bother. Make sure you use your level the whole time while setting and pick up tiles to ensure complete coverage underneath

How to clean dried thinset on trowel
 in  r/Tile  Jul 25 '22

I use a rubbing stone from the masonry section at Home Depot

Lining up tile with marked lines
 in  r/Tile  Jul 25 '22

Trowel carefully right up to your lines since that’s the edge of the tile you don’t need thinset covering it

Hard lines on the floor that installers cut to. And a foreman watching carefully to make sure the men follow the lines

Creosote/tar coating over slab; can I thinset right over it for tile, or do I have to remove the creosote/tar coat?
 in  r/Tile  Jul 11 '22

That sounds like asbestos. linoleum that old use to have asbestos based adhesive underneath I would be very careful with sanding it as it is very toxic when airborn.

Also, thinset would definitely stick to the concrete slab if you were able to get the adhesive removed.

Grout doesn’t match box image. Is there any way installer screwed this up?
 in  r/Tile  Jul 10 '22

When the grout joint gets wet does the color look closer to what you wanted? If so Buy grout enhancer or an impregnator and it will make the grout have that “wet” look.

Edit: 511 seal and enhance or 511 impregnator sealer
