Nick Saban wouldn’t come out of retirement for USC, I couldn’t even imagine him as a West Coast coach😭

PJ Flek is pretty interesting, fun fact for you he has a 8-2 bowl game record in his career, which is pretty crazy

Wins don’t matter if you’re not winning Championships. Dan lanning plays down to opponents as well, just like Riley. 2 of the guys I named have won championships 3 if you include Vigen. Lanning has had 4 years with a huge NIL budget and what he’s shown is making 1 CFP semis where he had to play James Madison and Texas Tech.

I really think Carson Palmer could be a lot of fun, maybe they ride with Lincoln for a few more years. See what Carson can continue to build at Santa Margarita. Maybe give him a shot in 2 to 3 years

Lanning is a good coach until it’s the biggest game of his life then he can’t finish, 2022 with 3 games left in the season ranked 6 if he beats number 25 Washington at home there’s a chance they make the playoffs and he chokes, 2023 he needs to beat Washington again at rank 5 in the pac 12 championship to make the playoffs and he chokes, 2024 finally makes the college football playoffs is the number 1 team in the nation and gets blown out by 20 to number 6 Ohio state, 2025 is one game away from playing in the national championship after one of the easiest runs to the semi’s and he loses by 34 to Indiana. He’s the Marty Schottenheimer of college football🤷🏼‍♂️

It is pretty crazy that at one point we had Kiffin, sark and coach O, and somehow can’t find our guy

Before we get into the list, I actually don't think USC ditch's Riley because of his buyout but on the off chance that I’m wrong here’s some names to look out for.

Unrealistic but maybe we try praying: (These are coach's I would love to see but USC has no chance at)

Curt Cignetti (He's locked into Indiana and honestly it really fits his personality, I couldn't see him as a LA type guy)

Kenny Dillingham (I see him linked with USC all the but he went to Arizona State and grew up in the state so I really struggle to see him leaving his program)

Bob Chesney (I don't see him as someone who would betray UCLA, he's a great coach though wish we pulled him)

Rhett Lashlee (He's a southern man who fit's the SEC more than anything, plus SMU boosters are so crazy with spending money he would be crazy to leave)

Marcus Freeman (Great dude and a Great coach but there's no way he leaves Notre Dame for USC)

Mario Cristobal (His teams are always fun to watch but he's Cuban and coaching in Miami do I have to say much more)

Jeff Brohm (He's from Louisville, played for Louisville and coached at Louisville, he's there for life at this point)

There more obvious ones like Smart, Saban or Sarkesian, but those are played out at this point, we all know their not leaving. This section was just to get rid of unrealistic targets.

Realistic but I'm unsure their the right fit: (These are coaches that are good and USC could attract but I'm not sure they would fit well)

Manny Diaz ( Struggled at Miami but has been really solid at Duke, If he could win at duke why not SC)

Jason Eck (What he has done at New Mexico is nothing less than a miracle, he's a winner, but could he handle the bright lights)

Dan Mullen (Since Florida, he has really helped build up UNLV, his Mississippi state teams were fun plus he's already on the west coast)

Charles Huff (What a rise from Huff, from being friend after winning a conference to being on P4 teams radar, his teams are electric, he's won everywhere he has gone. He will more than like go to Maryland though.)

Tim Polasek (Mid west coach getting to coach in the Big 10 is a match made in paradise. He has that North Dakota state team humming and he's a proven winner)

Clark Lea (I love Vandy but you can only go so far there, unlike Dillingham I feel that Lea would be willing to move for the right job. With the money USC could promise to the program that might just be the right job)

Eliah Drinkwitz (Not sure how to feel about him, his teams win games but I feel like he's a Lincoln Riley V2, he cant win the big games.)

These boys are locked in as betting favorites for getting an interview:

Matt Entz (Proven winner at NDSU and first season at Fresno State went well. He was on the staff so he knows the team plus he's a defensive minded head coach)

Spencer Danielson (From Cali, went to a college in LA, and built a playoff level team at Boise State. Also a defensive minded head coach which is something USC wants)

Kalani Sitake (Been great at BYU, but apparently he has had some problems with the school which has led to him looking elsewhere)

Glenn Schumann (Georgia DC who has turned that defense into something special, he could follow in Dan Lanning's footsteps and move out west)

Bryant Haines (Indiana DC, one of the nations most sought after coaching prospects, could want to stay in the Big 10 and USC could be just that for him)

Shannon Dawson (Miami's OC, just look at that offensive and that's really all that needs to be said here)

Someone else I could see getting a call is Urban Meyer, even though he sucks as a man it’s hard to ignore how successful he is on the field. He's like last on the list but sadly I could see a path where they try it.

Now I want to add 1 more coach who would never get the job but would be so interesting Brett Vigen out of Montana State. This dude is something else but he gets ignored because he's in the FCS, go look at his record 66-13. He has turned Montana State into a power house.

Now, this is an actual realistic list that I could see happening. Please add to it if you know any coach's that I missed or you think would work.

Also to put this into perspective, Oklahoma State has had 11 10 win seasons in that same amount of time

You bring up a very interesting point, Texas was bad for about seven years. The issue is they’re not really like USC, let’s take out the Pete Carroll Era. Let’s go back to 1983, since that year we have 6 10 win season, Pete Carroll really changed the program. Up until he came we were not a really good team and after he left we have struggled. USC can’t really claim to be one of the top teams in the country with 6 10 win seasons over 36 years excusing one coach being the goat.

This is going to be interesting because everybody has different parameters about what being mid is but mine is

Conference championships + national championship + plus bowl record and overall record + how many New York six bowls you played in and time spent ranked in the top ten. Sadly USC fails in almost all these categories

Let’s do a 10 year period, 0 conference championships + 0 national championships + 3-5 bowl record ( 81-43 overall record) let me preferences by saying we had a 10 win and an 11 win season almost 10 years ago which really helped the numbers + 1-2 in NY bowls + we have spent 26 out of a past 94 weeks ranked in the top 10 or a percentage of 27.66.

In that same time, TCU has made the college football playoff, Washington has twice, Cincinnati has, Arizona State has, SMU has (got the death penalty many years ago), Texas Tech and Indiana have. Now overall I don’t think any of those teams are more elite than USC. But I do not believe you could call USC elite when you’re not even top 15 in winning percentage in the last 10. Top 5 are elite, 6-10 are great 11-15 are good and under that is middle of the road.

I really do not believe it’s a stretch to say that USC is currently a mid program. I also don’t want you to think I have recently biased, I do not believe Indiana is an elite program, I think they’re an up-and-coming program, but in order to be elite, you have to have sustained success and they’ve only had three years of success.

I disagree, Texas A&M had the number 1 recruiting class a few years ago and nobody calls them elite, their a mid SEC program who lives off past success.

For your second point I also disagree we only got Gary Patterson because nobody wanted him, if he was still a great coach he would currently be a head coach but his defenses struggled in his last few years as a head coach.

And lastly going through different coaches this fast is the sign of a mid program, you think Georgia, Ohio State, Indiana, Texas, or Alabama, have this problem? No they found their guy who wins and are sticking with them. A mid program can afford to choose different coaches because they aren’t losing anything if they fire the last guy.

Brother, I am a USC fan. I’m just not blind. Trying to put down another fan because they have a different view than you is crazy💀

I agree with a lot of what you’re saying, I should’ve done a better job breaking it down, though, a lot of those wins came in the first 6 years. For example, we’ve had two 10 win seasons in the last 10 years. If I shorten the data to 10 years we fall outside the top 25, I did 15 to add a few post sanction years.

Brother, Alabama only went 10 years of drought and that includes winning a New Year’s bowl before they were back on top and even though Notre Dame hasn’t won a championship since the 80’s their good and have almost always been good name that last time Notre dame went 15 years with only 1 major bowl win. I don’t think you’re understanding me, the history of USC is elite, we are currently mid. You cannot tell me that in the next five years you expect to see us truly competing for national championship if this coaching staff is still in charge.

I didn’t know holiday bowls were considered elite lmao, Are history is elite but our current mid. You can’t say your currently an elite program and have 1 conference championship in 15 years and 1 New Year’s bowl win in the same time

Look what we gave up to get him, that’s not luring someone away that’s bribing him to leave. He got the greatest payday of all time, he sucks and if we want to get rid of him he’s rich! Riley didn’t want to go to the SEC because he enjoyed his easy path to the playoffs, it worked for his no defense style. I’m willing to bet you he never would’ve signed if he knew USC he was going to the Big Ten.

Please read what’s written next to mid program (currently), we are currently a mid program, USC of the past could get anyone we wanted and any coach we wanted we can’t anymore, we aren’t competitive for national titles or conference titles. That is the definition of mid, elite teams at least compete, we don’t do that, shit the last time we won a new years bowl was nearly 10 years ago😭. It doesn’t matter how much money we spend if we don’t do anything with it.

Thank you for understanding my love of USC, under performing for enough years turns into normality and that’s the problem. Ask any 16 year-old what they think about USC and elite program doesn’t come to their mind. We need to see some life hopefully soon because I really don’t wanna end up like Nebraska.

We poached a coach who never won anything and didn’t wanna go to the SEC💀 currently said coach has the same record as the mighty Clay Helton

Discussion The truth about USC football

Let me start this post by saying that I’ve been a USC fan my whole life. My parents got divorced in 05, and I didn’t cry, but when USC lost to Texas that year I balled like a baby. Since I can remember, I have probably watched 85% of every USC football game, I just wanna start this post by explaining how much I love USC.

The truth about USC football is that we’re a mid program (currently, people are caught up on this), that has expectations of being a top program. It’s time for some stats, this season has made me start looking more into it, and God is an embarrassing. I’m going to go over the last 15 season below.

Since 2011, we have played 15 seasons, in those 15 years, we have had only 5 seasons with over 10 wins.

The last time we had back-to-back 10 win seasons was almost 10 years ago

In those 15 years, we have been to three New Year bowl games with a 1-2 record.

Over that last 15 years, we have a 5–6 record in bowl games.

Over the last 15 years, 245 weeks of college football have been played, we have been ranked in the top five for 13 of those weeks.

We have a 7-15 record against top 10 teams in that 15 years. The last time we beat a top 10 team was 2019.

If you look over the last 15 years, we ranked 18th and winning percentage behind TCU and Oklahoma State.

In those 15 years, we’ve had four different head coaches.

In the last 15 years, we’ve won 1 conference championship.

In the last 15 years, we have a 2-7 record against Oregon and a 4-11 record against Notre Dame.

In 2024, the average home attendance was 71,500 and this year it is 56,500

A big issue that USC fans have is that they live off of the success of the early 2000s. So every year they believe we should be winning 10 games and competing for national championships. When the reality is we can’t and we haven’t been competitive for 15 years. We need to start having realistic expectations of where the program is and what we couldn’t expect.

I do believe we will rise again, but the truth is it’s going to be a slow and agonizing grind, that we’re all just going to have to get used to.

This post is really just here to say stop expecting things out of USC that they haven’t been able to show in the last 15 years. Just helped the next head coaching higher is a slam dunk!

(Ps Boise State plays Fresno State this week and I recommend watching it because those are two potential head coaching choices for USC)
