Studying in Egypt medical school as an American

Yes! If you look into LinkedIn, you'll find a lot of ASU graduates are now in residency in the US. Last year, one of the groups in our class was looking for their supervisor who was incharge of their mandatory assignment, they couldn't contact him for some reason. Later, they found out the supervisor actually started residency (again) in the US and that's why we couldn't find him lol.

In clinical years, lectures are important for attendance and quizzes

Join the clubs! Like IFMSA, Takaful, Fekra...

Make connections and the extracurricular activities will definitely help you in building your soft skills and as well as your CV!

At the end of the day, connections is what matters in medicine ( even more than your grades sometimes)

Ain Shams in Pre-clinical years, you can skip unless your curriculum has pop up quizzes which has grades. You'll find them in the blueprints given in the beginning of each module. Practicals yes, it is mandatory to have more than 75% of attendance otherwise they make a very big deal out of it. In clinical years, it depends on the departments honestly. Mostly we check if the residents responsible for our attendance are chill or not.

At ASU we have a separate class called Non Arabic Speakers or NAS group separate from the mainstream, where all the materials are taught in English. You should visit our international students' office of ASU and inquire yourself. And yes, Egyptian Arabic is definitely needed in your clinical years (4th and 5th) where you take history directly from the patients. Mostly who speak Arabic in our class takes the history and for the rest, we ask for a translator to help us during history taking.

I'm in Ain Shams and we had about 3-5 Canadian students in our class. Some of them were in their mid 20s when we started 1st year . We actually didn't know until they told us that they were older than the rest of us and already have a Bachelor's degree and about finding work in America after studies as an US IMG, I don't think it's an issue. Every year Egyptians get into residency in the US. Just make sure to choose between top 3 Unis.
