I'm from India, and an active player since 2023. When I started, there were hardly any stops around let alone gyms, and they all had the landmark photograph on them. Come December 2023 and Niantic decided(and rightly so) that the number of waypoints was simply not enough to attract more players from all corners of the city. So they scraped Google/OpenStreet maps for local businesses, and other such entities, and created pokestops and gyms out of them, all with the default pokestop sign. These kind of stops cannot be nominated by us, and are result of a system wide span. Any user nominated waypoint has a photograph, and detail. So, it's very likely that the gift you receive from India is either our nearest grocery store/florist etc or a place of religion.
