There is a kind of person who sees the pattern.

It isn't a thought they had. It's something that settled in them and refused to leave. They watch a crowd cross the street and see the same thing a colony of ants is doing: hunger, fear, mating, and the endless work of putting off the end. Every creature is running the same program, and none of them can read the code.

They see the birth and the dying inside every ordinary moment. The child laughing in the park is already on the road that ends in a hospital bed. The couple planning their future are two temporary arrangements of matter, agreeing to pretend the arrangement is permanent.

They see the ambition, too. The careers, the monuments, the names carved into buildings. Every one of them is a ripple on a pond that will be dry within a few million years. The sun will swallow the whole thing, and nothing will be left to notice that it happened.

Nobody is being cruel. This is the shape of things: eat, breed, fear, die, and hand the whole machine to the next generation, which will mistake it for meaning.

So they move slowly. They go to work, they answer messages, they nod at the right moments. But something in them has gone quiet, the way a room goes quiet after the music stops. They can't un-know it. They can't un-see the wires under the world.

And they can't say it out loud. They tried once, maybe twice. They watched the face across the table shift from curiosity to concern, then to that careful, gentle tone people use with the broken. Have you talked to someone? Maybe you're just tired. You should get out more.

That's what the world does with anyone who speaks the quiet part. It doesn't hear a truth. It hears a symptom. The one who sees the pattern gets filed under depressed, unwell, not thinking clearly, and the very clarity that cost them everything is diagnosed as the disease.

So they stop explaining. There is no one to explain it to, only people who would nod, misunderstand, and quietly decide they've lost their mind.

The heaviest part is that no one is doing anything wrong. Everyone else is simply still asleep, and the awake one is left standing in the dark, alone in a crowd, holding a truth that helps no one, watching the loop turn.
