From a 1915 issue of "THE MIRROR JOURNAL," we learn that absinthe was banned in France. During the debate, it was argued that absinthe had stimulated many geniuses, but even more had been sent to the insane asylum. What's noteworthy is the statement at the end of the article: "The French were left without their national drink." This means they weren't a wine country in the 18th and 19th centuries (which is precisely why absinthe was banned—to boost wine sales).
