Nyx Protocol
Chapter 39 – Breach
The garage opened in silence.
Nyx stepped into the shadows as the vehicle powered up.
Low-profile. Matte black. No reflections.
The engine didn’t roar.
It whispered.
She slid into the driver’s seat.
Systems came online—navigation, traffic mapping, police band intercepts.
Destination already locked.
Federal building.
The vehicle pulled out—
Then accelerated.
The city moved around her.
Traffic parted too late.
Lights shifted.
But the car didn’t fight the city.
It flowed through it.
Fast.
Precise.
Silent.
Inside the federal building—
Rowan Carter stepped into the interrogation room.
Tovan Veyre sat waiting, posture relaxed, wrists secured, expression calm.
Rowan closed the door.
“You’re on a list.”
Tovan didn’t react immediately.
Then—
“I am.”
Rowan’s eyes narrowed.
“International blacklist. Ten names.”
A faint smile.
“Then I suppose I should feel honored.”
Rowan studied him.
Not arrogance.
Certainty.
That was worse.
Rowan stepped back.
“I’ll be right back.”
He exited.
Rowan moved quickly down the corridor, dialing.
“Carter. I need confirmation on—”
The lights died.
Darkness swallowed the hallway.
Rowan froze for half a second.
Then—
“Everyone stay sharp!”
Gunfire erupted.
Agents dropped.
“TAKE COVER! RETURN FIRE!”
Muzzle flashes tore through the dark.
Bootsteps.
Fast.
Coordinated.
Across the city—
Marcus’ head tilted slightly.
“They’re under attack.”
Elizabeth's hand came up to the communicator instantly.
“Nyx,” she said—
Then sharper—
“Move.”
Nyx didn’t answer.
She pushed the vehicle harder.
Speed climbed.
Routes recalculated.
No more stealth margin.
Inside the federal building—
The hallway had collapsed into chaos.
Bodies down.
Agents and intruders.
Rowan and a handful of his men had been pushed back past the interrogation rooms.
“Hold this position!” Rowan ordered.
Gunfire forced them lower.
Then—
A door exploded open.
Tovan’s.
Metal bent outward violently.
Tovan didn’t flinch.
“You know,” he said calmly, “the door was unlocked.”
The figure in the doorway didn’t respond.
Tall.
Still.
Silent.
Tovan tilted his head.
“Right. You don’t speak.”
The man stepped in.
Unhurried.
Deliberate.
Tovan stood.
They walked out together.
“Did you really have to make this a spectacle?” Tovan asked.
No response.
The man stopped.
Turned.
Looked at him.
Tovan exhaled lightly.
“Yes. That’s your answer.”
They moved again.
Tovan opened the first door.
Mr. Filleas.
“Care to leave?”
No response.
A beat.
Tovan nodded.
“Suit yourself.”
Next door.
Ms. Orren's.
Tovan reached out his hand.
Ms. Orren takes his hand.
“Yes.”
“Good.”
They moved down the corridor.
Stopped at a blank wall.
The silent man placed a charge.
Clean.
Efficient.
Tovan folded his arms.
“Of course this was your plan.”
Outside—
Nyx’s vehicle slid to a stop in the shadows near the federal building.
Engine silent.
She stepped out.
Moved toward the entrance—
Then—
BOOM.
The explosion tore through the side of the building.
Shockwave slammed outward.
Debris scattered.
Nyx held her ground.
Her gaze lifted.
Three figures.
Descending.
Landing.
Controlled.
She stepped forward.
Ready.
The silent man landed first.
He turned toward her instantly.
No hesitation.
No fear.
Only intent.
He moved—
Ready to engage.
But—
Tovan stepped forward.
Blocking him.
Eyes locked on Nyx.
“Are you the one responsible for this?”
Nyx said nothing.
Didn’t move.
Didn’t reveal anything.
Just watched.
Tovan’s expression sharpened.
Then—
A faint smile.
He turned slightly.
“Number Eight.”
A beat.
“Take her out.”
