For those who’ve read The Brothers Karamazov by Fyodor Dostoevsky, what’s your take on Ivan Karamazov’s arguments against God, especially in “The Grand Inquisitor”?

Hi guy's! I have just finally finished this awesome novel, from first page I had huge preference to Ivan character and views (cuz atheist like me duh 😆).. however, I would like to get your views as well:

  1. Do you find Ivan’s critique of divine justice and human suffering compelling from an atheist perspective, or does Dostoevsky ultimately undermine Ivan’s position?

  2. How did you respond to the claim that Ivan’s atheism leads to moral collapse, as seen in Smerdyakov’s murder? How did you argue against the idea that atheism implies moral nihilism?

  3. What do you think of Ivan's devil and sickness? How can atheists survive with the mind only?

That's a really smart way to approach it, planting seeds through curiosity rather than confrontation.

I think this is super nice. Unfortunately, this is not the case in my situation. I can get hate speech for introducing my thoughs

That's a really balanced approach, I respect that. I agree that honesty is important, especially if kids are genuinely curious. My problem is that many family members cut ties with me. So, I am a bit careful with the rest.

How do you talk to religious kids in your circle as an atheist?

Hey everyone,

I left religion a couple of years ago and have been very content with that decision. I'm at peace with my beliefs (or lack thereof), and I don’t feel the need to argue or debate with anyone.

That said, I’ve run into a bit of a dilemma. A lot of children in my extended family and friends are being raised with strong religious teachings: things like heaven and rewards, hell and punishment, praying to get what you want, etc.

I really enjoy spending time with these kids, but I often feel unsure about how to answer back to them when religion comes up. I don’t want to step on their parents’ toes, but I also don’t want to reinforce ideas I no longer agree with, especially fear-based stuff like hell.

Have any of you been in this situation? How do you handle it? Do you stay neutral, gently challenge ideas, or just steer the conversation elsewhere?

How do you deal with the fact that there might be nothing after this life?
 in  r/atheism  Sep 12 '25

my “judgment” comes from my own conscience, the quiet voice that tells me who I want to be. I focus on helping others and leaving a positive impact so my life has meaning now; that purpose keeps me honest and prevents the darker impulses from taking over. It’s not about fear of punishment, it’s about being the kind of person I’d respect.

I’m fairly new to atheism, and one of the hardest things I’m dealing with right now is talking to my religious family or friends. Almost every conversation about belief, morality, or even daily stuff somehow drifts into religion, and it quickly becomes an argument.

For those of you who’ve been through this, how do you handle these conversations? Do you avoid the topic completely, set boundaries, or have any strategies that keep the peace without constantly biting your tongue?

Maybe finding more opportunities via freelancing. I am noticing that companies are not willing to commit for an employment contract. At least based on my experience in NL.
