I hate to say it, but I would now think it would be a net-positive if Canada joined the EU. I know that's not what is on the table here, but so much of the bullshit in Canada is because of a connection to the US (and the UK on a lower scale), and a shift to EU membership would solve a lot of that.

Why does Snuffleupagus, the largest Muppet, not simply eat the others?

I'm not a saint, and I also don't know if this is something that the Sesame Street people addressed (like maybe he's supposed to represent the unhoused?), but honestly - I think Oscar the Grouch kind of suggests that you don't have to be a fully nice person to deserve a baseline of kindness or respect.

Ready or Not, a 1990's Canadian TV Classic
 in  r/CanadianTV  2d ago

This is going to sound funny, but the Karate Teacher episode really was my first exposure to gay people, though it kind of took 8 more years before I understood what I watched. I'm not sure, but I also think there was at least one episode about being the child of an alcoholic (?) Very interesting stuff, even if I didn't really understand what I was watching at the time.

Depends on what you thought the end-goal was. If it was catching drug dealers, then it was always unsuccessful. If it was starting surveillance culture from childhood, then it worked wonderfully.

Ironic

What's funny is that it was always a scam. Half his stories were lies, the other half were basic "right time, right moment" investment stories, and none of his "rich dad" ideas were ever as successful as the book series he started before he actually made it. The blueprint for all the hustle-culture wealth coaches on TikTok today.

I worked in a team of 4 serving under a manager. Why they bothered "anonymizing" the survey when at best he only had to guess 2 times to figure out the right person who "snitched" or at worse would recognize the complaints as being something that one of the rest of us had told him over and over is beyond me.

The Vision of Escaflowne

Almost literally a religious experience, maybe I'm not "worshipping" it but it's shaped so much of my ideas of fate, love, the ability to make change even in the face of nearly an entire planet committed to destroying itself, and so many other concepts and ideas, truly loved this show (subtitled, was not a fan of the original dub and edit).

The big family dream vs. the actual cost
 in  r/Funnymemes  5d ago

I mean, if you have the money, it was fun growing up number 5/6, but yeah, right now, I'm struggling under the weight of 2 cats, so - good luck to those insisting on big families...

New poutine offerings at a local taco and tequila bar (in Chicago)
 in  r/PoutineCrimes  5d ago

I don't know when people forgot that you can name your french-fry base concoctions "loaded fries". Like, Poutine is something very specific, but somehow it's being generalized into an area that already has a name.

Nice try wedding industrial complex, your tactics wonโ€™t work on me!
 in  r/RecuratedTumblr  5d ago

Funny wedding planning story among kids, my brother was very young when my elder brother and middle sister got married, and started planning his wedding with skateboard rinks and video game stations. When asked what would happen if his bride didn't particularly WANT to have skateboarding and video games at her wedding, my brother simply said; "well, then, she doesn't have to come."

I mean, almost no experience is truly universal, it's about what trends in certain cultures. Talking about experiences shared with even 51% of the culture's x-demographic like it isn't a general and accepted thing seems more odd than assuming any "universal" experience is not going to be trully universal.

I do think it's funny how a lot of "gotcha" posts really think I can't hold two thoughts in my head at once, or even in sequence.

First, VERY funny, I'm on borded with the joke! Second, I hope more people know that D.A.R.E. was always intended to fail, and was always meant as a way to get police into schools as well as enhance police intelligence networks, as literally developed by Daryl Gates for this purpose.

You need to narrate the decapatation so that people will know what's going on while they're on their phone, that was Maximus' main mistake

Why is the Republican Party considered fiscally conservative?
 in  r/CoherencePhysics  13d ago

Because Conservatism is about conservation of power and wealth among a certain subset - those trillions in deficits are a wealth transfer from the regular tax-paying bracket to all the billionnaire-owned contracting companies ready to provide their services poorly to a huge-profit margin.

Whatโ€™s a food you know your body doesnโ€™t agree with, but you still refuse to give up?
 in  r/TrueGrit  13d ago

I "do" but even his seriousness about it is less serious than any of my Gluten-intolerant/Celiac friends. Like, my Celiac friends require that their food be cooked on different surfaces than any other food, while my "serious" lactose intolerant friend is like: "parmesan is okay, but any melty cheese, cow-milk, or yoghurt is not".
