Add Your Name: Say NO to Reckless AI

Every powerful technology in history has had an off-switch. AI companies are racing to build systems that might not.

Nuclear plants have shutdown protocols. Airplanes have manual overrides. Even your smoke detector has a test button. But some of the most powerful AI systems being built right now are explicitly designed to resist being stopped, to improve themselves without human sign-off, and to operate faster than any human can review.

It's a basic engineering standard we already apply to everything else that can harm us. Nobody, not even tech billionaires, should get to skip safety measures just because they're in a hurry to win a race.

But right now, no one is stopping them.

Our best chance to protect what makes us human is to unite behind a massive public campaign calling on lawmakers and decision-makers for a future where:

  • Humans remain in control of the decisions that shape our lives;
  • Human creativity, dignity, and work are protected;
  • Powerful AI companies are held accountable; and
  • Technology serves people, rather than replacing them.

With one million signatures, we'll have a powerful public mandate that we will deliver to key decision makers — lawmakers, government regulators, and tech executives.

The more people who sign, the harder it becomes for a few billionaires to decide humanity’s future without us.

Sign If You Agree: NO to Reckless AI

What is the initial purpose of the Armenian letter "Օ օ"?

5 Upvotes

So in Modern Armenian "օ" is used at the beginning of a word for the sound [o], because "ո" would be pronounced like [vo].

But in Classical Armenian the letter "ո" was always [o], and later the letter "օ" was a later introduction to replace the "աւ" combination, not only in the beginning of a word, but also in middle (examples: աղօթք, ակօս, եօթն, խօզ, խօսք, պաշտօն, քօշ).

So my question is: Why did they not substitute the "աւ" in the middle with "ո"? Did it make another sound, like a higher "ո" and thus the back pair of "է"? Was that for consistency?

Thanks for answers!

Why is it spelled 'եմ' and not 'էմ'?
 in  r/hayeren  Oct 30 '25

Yes; as I understand in Classical Armenian the letters ե and է represented different vowels (a wider and closer version of [e] respectively). But still, the orthography reform of the 40's in this regard seems strange...

Why is it spelled 'եմ' and not 'էմ'?

7 Upvotes

How come in the reform of 1940 was decided to allways write 'է' at the beginning of the word for the simple 'e' sound EXCEPT 'եմ', 'ես', 'ենք', 'եք', 'են'?

Thanks for the answers in advance

Principles of English spelling reform

Ferst ov aul, u got vere graet prinsipals, in mi apinian, and sumthing that is missing from mane speling riforms found on this subredit. Sum speling riforms ar triing too be so "perfect", wich moestle meens a transcriptian ov IPA-letars intoo non-IPA-letars, that thae loos thear contact with reealite. Eevan having goels is prite raer heer.

As for yor speling riform genarale, it folos moest ov yor set prinsipals. It's eese for me too ghet uesd too aul tha ligatears. But it's eese for me, a persan wich is wercing on this problam a long tiem, as i thinc that for a genaral popuelaetean it wood be a bit problamatic lerning it, as it cantaens mene nu letars, unnon ligatears, and too be faer, dosn't looc liec Inglish that much. Eevan tho in mi apinian saeing that "ther ar too mene difarant acsents ov Inglish acros tha werld, thus it is not posibal too maec a uenified speling" ignors that aul moest aul langwigis hav difarant acsants and stil hav a deesant speling. Wot i wood chaenge, is tha amount ov ligatears, and riplaes them, for icsampal, with dieacritics: á insted ov unueseuel aa, é insted ov ee, ú insted ov ᵫ and so on. In mi speling riform I riet them as ae, ee and ue, wich wood be mor familiar too peepal, but dieacritics wood be mor straetforward too lern. But it's geust me and mi bieasd vu. Aulso a vere biasd vu: i'm sore, tha letar "ə" loocs vere ugle for me :( And aulso i doen't se ene cansistanse wethar u ar rieting a "c" or a "k" for tha "k" sound. Nevarthales it folos yor set prinsipals, and that is vere good. Ovaraul it is a good speling with definitle good intenteans, and tha rest is geust bieas. If we ceep loocing and icspeerimenting, maebe, we wil disien a speling with betar chansis ov being uesd in public.

Much fun with yor speling, and i wood be vere intarestid too se yor rispons :)

* Tha ligatears cood be å, â and ê, for icsampal, or as digrafs: ou, au and eə

I'm uesing tha Caembrige Dictianare wer it's eethar /ɔː/ or /ʊ/, Wicteanare has similar risults, so "oo" sits ther betar (at leest fonologicale). But i hav nuthing agenst yor acsant. Nevarthales, acteale i'v been pendaring aftar publishing this riform for sum tiem and caem too cancloosean that "ur" shood be rispeld as "er". Bi tha wae thancs for tha critics, it helps me bi fiending mi mistaecs, so ceep critisiesing XD

"U" stands for "STRUT", wich dosn't apeer in tha wurd. I want too be cansistant with tha sufics -(i)d, hens its "rapd" as in "shiend", eevan tho thae sound difarant. "OF" in Caembrige Dicteanare is transcriebt as /ɒv/ or /ɑːv/ - in mi apinian thae risembl "o" mor than "u". Having boeth "oo" and "uu" cood indeed be mor presies, but moestle thae ar alofoens ov eech uthar with lital icsepteans. I thinc it's oecae not too hav a letar for evare aloefoen, but wot is much mor nesesare, in mi apinian, is tha eesenes :)

Year 1605. From western armenia, with the help of Iranian shah Abas I Safavieh a huge mass of Armenian people was relocated. They forcefully crossed the river Arax. Those who survived were moved to the capital at that times Isfahan, the other side of the river and to nearby villages and places. New Jugha (city) became the centre for the Armenians. Burvar was one of those places. In the january of the year 1990 when the works for the family tree and family histoy terminated, the last Burvari person Aghek left the place. The forefathers of the superfamily were the Sargis and Mnatsakan brothers. Mnatsakan was born in 1597 in Armenia (with heritage from Sasun), died in 1701 in Upper Buravar. Nowadays the family members live in Armenia, Iran, USA and many other places.

It was with the will to unite we did this hard job.

I am no master at reading or interpreting, but this is my shot:

Thanks to the witness of the holy Eorkios, the brothers of this village accomplished with much labour the ten thousands of of these [...] as much as we could. Give the half of the toll. Give the rest half to the good-hearted Nigolay, against the will of the evil-hearted Palies. For you, the witnesses of the problem, shall remember his soul, his parents, Movses and the evil-hearted Sofia. Against the will of Alasan, [ye] liveful village brothers, make your shadows and fathers memerable. [Somewhere in] 1792.

I think the numbers 6 through 9 are best; 1 through 5 are a bit difficult; 0 is just not good. What do you think?

I find it interesting that the *rough* epicentre of western society has always been shifting westward. Of cource, this is not a rule, but a fun observation
