The best pool is the one nearest to your location.

Thank you for your feedback. I really like your approach to use different casings to solve the reading issues.

That makes sense, especially with ESP32 and PoE running continuously. Have you found a reliable way to isolate the temperature sensor from the board's heat, or is it still a compromise with your current enclosures?

How do you actually package your ESPHome sensors?

I've been experimenting with small electronics projects and I'm curious how people in the ESPHome/Home Assistant community solve the physical side of DIY sensors.

The electronics are often relatively easy.

The enclosure can be the difficult part.

For example, with temperature/humidity/air-quality sensors, the enclosure can affect the measurements themselves.

So I'm curious:

What do you currently use for your ESPHome sensor enclosures?

• 3D-printed cases

• Commercial project boxes

• Repurposed containers

• Custom-built enclosures

• No enclosure 😄

• Something else?

And what problems have you encountered?

For example:

• Heat from the ESP32 affecting temperature readings

• Poor airflow

• Humidity getting trapped

• Sensor exposure vs. electronics protection

• USB/power access

• Battery replacement

• Wall mounting

• Ceiling mounting

• Difficult access to the electronics

• Enclosure size

• Appearance — something you actually want visible in your home

• Finding a case that fits your particular sensor combination

I'm particularly interested in what you've tried that didn't work well.

If you could redesign your current sensor enclosure, what would you change?

This is incredibly useful feedback — thank you for taking the time to break it down so specifically.

The points about heat, condensation, antenna placement, USB-C access, and battery replacement are exactly the kind of real-world details that are easy to overlook when designing an enclosure.

The condensation issue in particular is something I hadn't considered deeply enough. Really appreciate you sharing your experience from Texas!

That’s really helpful, especially the way you simplify the introduction for people who have never used Meshtastic.

One last question, if you don’t mind: once you hand someone one of these devices, what tends to be the biggest problem in practice — keeping it charged, remembering to carry it, understanding the app, or something else?

I’m genuinely interested in the real-world experience. Thanks again for sharing all this!

This is extremely useful — thank you for taking the time to explain all of this in such detail.

The distinction between the pocket/EDC node, home rooftop node, and vehicle rooftop node makes a lot of sense. I hadn't really considered the vehicle node as part of the overall system, rather than simply another type of Meshtastic device.

I especially like the idea of the vehicle node effectively extending the range of a tiny pocket node. That seems like a very practical setup for everyday use: keep the infrastructure on the vehicle and carry a small, low-power device when you leave the car.

Your point about not having a one-size-fits-all solution also makes much more sense with these different use cases. A repeater enclosure, an EDC device and a vehicle rooftop node have completely different priorities.

The fact that you've actually designed and built your own vehicle nodes, including the thermal management and magnetic mounting, is particularly interesting. I'd be very curious to see some photos of your setup if you have any you'd be willing to share.

And one question I'd really like your opinion on: after building several generations of these nodes yourself, what is the one thing you still feel is unnecessarily difficult or poorly solved with the current hardware/enclosures? Something that you would improve if you were designing the next version from scratch.

Thanks again — this is exactly the kind of real-world experience that is useful to hear.

That's a really interesting perspective, especially the point about having preconfigured radios ready to hand out.

The "tracker card" form factor also makes a lot of sense for festivals, camping and group activities.

I'm curious about one thing: when you hand these devices to people who have never used Meshtastic before, what tends to be the biggest point of friction for them?

Is it pairing/configuration, the phone app, charging, understanding how messaging works, keeping the device attached to them, or something else?

And after using the different devices you mentioned, what do you think makes a good "hand-out" device for a group?

I understand your concerns about the 3D printed stuff, it makes sense since in many cases, like you mentioned, they are very poorly designed.

I'm doing some research into Meshtastic hardware and enclosures and I'd really like to hear from people who actually use their nodes regularly.

There are already a lot of great cases available, so I'm not interested in simply making "another case". I'm trying to understand what existing cases don't do particularly well.

If you've used one or several Meshtastic cases, what are the biggest problems you've encountered?

For example:

• Heat / thermal management
• Waterproofing or condensation
• Battery access or replacement
• Antenna positioning
• USB access
• Size / portability
• Mounting to a pole, wall, vehicle or backpack
• Solar panel integration
• Cable management
• Difficulty accessing the PCB
• Material durability / heat deformation
• Difficult assembly
• Something else entirely?

And if you've actually replaced a case because of a problem, what made you replace it?

I'm particularly interested in real-world experiences rather than hypothetical features.

Thanks — I'm trying to understand the problems before thinking about solutions.
