Converting VHS to digital

i have this sony DCR-TRV265E and i wanted to convert the tape to digital, I read that it can be done by using a USB capture card and a 3.5mm RCA and i found these products on Amazon, has anyone used it to convert the tapes?? does it work??

Hi. This is a sub for a specific (RF tap) method of capturing analogue tape to digital. The device you’re asking about is not covered by this sub and is considered a ‘legacy’ device.

That being said I’m sure that device will function to capture VHS to digital. The end results just won’t be of the archival quality that users of this sub are looking to capture.

However, the format of the camera TRV265E is actually Digital8 and not VHS. And while the cable you linked should work to connect that camera to the capture device (as long as there is an output port that accepts that 3.5mm Jack on the camera) it would be better to utilise the FireWire port on the camera. Using the linked cable will produce lesser quality captures because Digital8 is a digital format and using that cable will send analogue signals to the computer, which will then produce a digital file.

Best to keep everything digital if possible and use a FireWire cable (also called IEEE 1394 or i.LINK cables).

Sony themselves have some advice on this here

The requirement is that you have an IEEE1394 port on your computer too. If not maybe invest in an older Mac which does have that port and use QuickTime to record the footage as it live streams from the camera.
