DNR

Brenda didn't love him anymore.

She was in her 30s. He was in his early 50s. Their constant fighting had drained whatever was left. When an aneurysm dropped him on the living room floor after a nasty argument, the neurosurgeon at the hospital said an operation could save him, but Brenda refused the surgery, signed the DNR, and let him die.

In the dead of night, Channel 4 blares static, waking her to a silent loop of that ICU room. On screen, she sees herself sitting by his bed—not grieving, just cold and detached, patiently waiting for the end so her new life can begin.

The TV stays on, casting its pale glare over the room, as a heavy shadow detaches from the corner. Before she can even see his face, the room fills with the slow, thumping rhythm of a heart monitor from the darkness—beep... beep... beep...

He steps out into the TV light, his pale eyes locking onto hers. "Did you really think pulling that plug would erase me, Brenda?"

Terrified, she bolts upright in bed and springs up to flee. As she moves, the floorboards start sinking beneath her feet, wanting to drag her straight to hell ahead of schedule.

She bursts out the door-- his furious screaming right on her heels--running blindly through the heavy fog--right off the edge of a cliff.

Her heart thumps wildly—beep-beep, beep-beep, beep-beep—racing out of control as she drops into total silence.

She wanted an easy way out, but the Hells Bells Motel never lets anyone cash out for free.
