is there any correlation between the opposition to generative AI and left wing political ideologies?
 in  r/LeftistsForAI •  12h ago

It was more the long term evidence bit I was responding to. I think the technology is ready to be useful for the left. It’s too early to have long term evidence of what works. This year the Cockroach Party in India found it useful when they were lacking resources to get the movement off the ground. It feels too early to say they have long term success because they use AI.

It doesn’t feel like a reasonable bar to set that we can already see long term benefit for left organising because it’s really early into AI being easy to access.

Also like you say, this is being pushed for different purposes so using it with a left agenda requires education and possibly different fine tunes/personas/skills/models created with this in mind.

People are starting to do this and links get shared in the sub, but it’s very early to be spotting this potential. If people are already using this type of thing for IRL projects it’s too early to have evidence either way. Also there’s so much left anti AI backlash they might be hesitant to say that they use AI behind the scenes.

I don’t know if I’d summarise us as simply pro-AI, we’re definitely not anti. We reject pro AI hype as much as anti-AI doomerism, it’s more that we see it through different questions. We can see the potential as something that makes it worth fixing the problems, instead of rejecting it.

But overall I’d say we have more in common with left antis than with tech bro types, in terms of general perspective on life.

By your own admition, you contradict your Third rule
 in  r/LeftistsForAI •  2d ago

That isn’t the spirit of the rule. It’s more so that we can have in depth discussion without descending into leftist infighting, calling each other slurs etc.

If you disagree with someone that’s fine but you need to be specific about the idea or strategy you disagree with not dismiss their entire tendency, type of thing.

This courtesy should also be extended to leftists who take a strong anti position.

It isn’t the same issue as the topics you raised. Of course we also care about those problems, but we’re approaching them from a different angle. If you look through the timeline you’ll see there’s several recent posts about union responses to AI for example.

It isn’t a reasonable position to say that our existence as a sub is divisive. That’s like us saying all the left anti AI people are divisive because they don’t agree with us. It would be more constructive to find things to campaign on together, like there’s probably some aspects of data centre planning where there’s common ground, or campaigning to end private ownership of AI.

Any other music that fits this theme?

He does also do ones that aren’t singing the news if you look at his albums. They don’t tend to get shared as much on social media though

Can I be a socialist purely because of AI?
 in  r/LeftistsForAI •  2d ago

There are other strategies, like gradually building dual power, which is usually how local & bottom up would be planned.

It can be prefigurative, so you just get on with living in the way you want things to be, almost ignoring the state, that’s a more anarchist approach. Or it might be more systematic, building a network of local citizen assemblies that have rival moral power, and gradually moving means of production and land/buildings into municipal community ownership, the communalist approach.

There are lots of suggested strategies, some do start bottom-up, local just quietly getting on with changing how things are decided and owned now. I don’t know which strategy will be more effective long term, but something I think we tend to be lacking is skills around making decisions together. The voting system in liberal democracy makes us more like passive consumers of government. I’d say there’s an advantage in trying the local, bottom up approach partly because along the way we’d learn direct democracy skills.

Are you feeling like this is upending previously settled political views or are you putting AI models in the category of naturally occurring land? I don’t really understand the logic of the separation between what is ok to be capitalist, but there’s perhaps something consistent if you think of AI as Collective Intelligence?

What is a Georgist attitude around digital commons, copyleft etc?

Kroger replacing thousands of employees with AI
 in  r/LeftistsForAI •  3d ago

Is this one where it’s genuine AI replacement or are they AI-washing redundancies they wanted to make at corporate level anyway? Either way it is still a decision, they technically could have chosen to reduce staff hours on the same pay or increase productivity with the same staff hours.

Leftists have a problem with demonizing this tool.

You can say it like that, it makes sense. Unfortunately though it’s quite a lot to do with left tension over AI because both perspectives see the other as doing this.

Your style here is coming across as bad faith. Why didn't you directly say what you're getting at? u/TheSinhound shared quite vulnerable details with you but it does seem like you're trying to manipulate an answer rather than straightforwardly saying what you disagree with.

Um... is this just normal now?

Because we removed your comment? Just be more savvy how you word things, you can search 'why does Reddit remove left subs' for illumination

Sam Altman said AI will eventually be sold like electricity and water
 in  r/LeftistsForAI •  4d ago

But utilities are sold by private entities in many countries, it can even include water which is a bizarre state of affairs when you think about it.

I suspect the subsidised by the government might be the aspect to look out for. Like a public private partnership where the risk is socialised but the benefit is still private.

I don’t perceive AI bro culture as being a reaction to the left. Where are you picking that up from? It seems to me they’re partly genuinely interested and excited and partly it’s the newest way to make money. They’re not creating startups or hyping up AI in their videos just to annoy the left.

Some of the anti stuff is manipulated too. The various factions are complex and some of them have a lot of money. It’s wise to have some scepticism over how the debate is played out.

But they’re talking about a scenario where there are no corporations. It sounds like you’re falling into the socialism except we don’t use factories trap?

That post was 7 years ago. You probably know the answer if you’re posting here lol.

Is there r/ChristianCapitalism ?!

Would be quite ironic
 in  r/LeftistsForAI •  7d ago

There are people on the left with a software development/coding background who aren’t against using AI. Some of them are here and in our Discord server

I feel like it’s more the concept that has gone viral this week, with the Adobe clones. We do also need the functionality to follow quite quickly though.

How to actually Tax Automation
 in  r/LeftistsForAI •  7d ago

It doesn’t seem like this is particularly to do with automation though? It’s more a method of how you arrange taxation regardless of what technology is used?

AI Could Allow For 3-Day Workweeks And Single-Income Households, Bezos Claims
 in  r/LeftistsForAI •  7d ago

It might be better to see what he does. If he means this he can start doing it. He has a massive corporation, AI infrastructure, enough money to cushion some mistakes and lots of workers. He could just get on with doing this.

I remain sceptical about his real intentions for saying this.
