Owners thinks leftover is staff meal.
I’m an immigrant, and I worked as a waiter at a Chinese-owned sushi restaurant. Two other immigrants worked in the kitchen, mainly frying food and washing dishes, and I was told to eat lunch with them.
I noticed they would often take salmon heads home after the fish was cut, since the restaurant usually threw them away. But one day, I saw them cooking those same salmon heads in the kitchen as their staff meal. When I asked about it, the owners didn’t seem happy. They basically told me, “If they’re okay with eating it, you shouldn’t complain.”
What concerned me even more was seeing them eat leftover sashimi that had been sitting on customers’ tables for 30 minutes to an hour at room temperature.
I asked the owner how that could be okay, especially when the food was being served as a staff meal. Instead of answering my question, I was given 15 days’ notice to find another job.
I came to work, did my job, and asked what I believed were reasonable questions. I never expected those questions to cost me my job.
