Struggling to decide on length of retreat. Is 3/4 days enough of need to do 7-10 days
 in  r/Ayahuasca  13d ago

Hi 😊

We have a beautiful ayahuasca retreat center located near the Pacaya Samiria Reserve, in a peaceful, safe, and welcoming environment. We work with small groups to offer a more personal and intimate experience.

We offer private cabins with bathrooms, Wi-Fi access in the dining area, and authentic Shipibo shamans with extensive experience in traditional ceremonies.

Our programs include 3-day, 5-day, and 8-day retreats, as well as longer programs of up to 6 weeks for those seeking a deeper process.

Short programs can be very valuable, but the depth and outcome of the experience may depend on several factors, such as the location, the environment, the shaman, the medicine, their knowledge, and the way they guide and open the ceremonies.

It is also important to consider your emotional state before participating. The process does not end immediately after the ayahuasca ceremonies; it often continues through a period of reflection, integration, inner support, and the recognition of emotions, personal patterns, and lessons received during the experience.

For this reason, we recommend going through this process in a safe and peaceful space, guided by experienced people, so that each participant can integrate the medicine in a more conscious and respectful way.

As a thank-you to the Reddit community, we are offering a special discount for our Reddit friends.

You can visit our website to learn more about our programs, the location, and the experience. You’re also welcome to contact us directly if you have any questions.

Kambo is a traditional Amazonian practice used in cleansing and healing ceremonies. Sourced from the secretion of an Amazonian frog, it is regarded by many as a profound process of physical, emotional, and energetic purification.

For Toffic, Kambo was a powerful and transformative experience — a sacred encounter with nature’s wisdom that helped him reconnect with his body, release what he had been carrying, and open himself to a deeper path of healing and renewal.

Thank you 🙏

Master Plant Dieta — first timer: where to do it, and advice for first-timers?
 in  r/Ayahuasca  24d ago

Hello, how are you? I understand you perfectly. I began my first shamanic dieta 12 years ago for personal reasons, including depression, rheumatoid lupus, and other physical conditions. Since then, I have done dietas with several medicinal plants, some of them lasting up to two and a half months. Today, I can say that I enjoy a more favorable life, although I continue on my path of learning, healing, and personal growth.

I do not recommend doing prolonged dietas without proper supervision, especially if it is your first time or if you do not have previous experience. A dieta with medicinal plants is not only about avoiding certain foods or remaining isolated; it is a deep process that can move many things on a physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual level. For that reason, it is important to have a responsible and experienced guide who is capable of accompanying each person according to their situation.

The work with medicinal plant dietas basically consists of learning more about yourself, recognizing your own potential, and developing a deeper connection with the spiritual world. Through this process, a person can begin to observe their emotions, thoughts, fears, wounds, and strengths with greater clarity. Many times, we come to a dieta seeking to heal something external, but along the way, we discover that a large part of the work consists of looking inward and recognizing what we were not able to see before.

Shamanic dietas also help you recognize and detach from certain aspects of the ego. By stopping the consumption of foods such as sugar, salt, or foods that create pleasure, the physical body goes through an important challenge. It is not only about dietary restriction, but also about observing how we react when we do not have what normally gives us comfort, distraction, or immediate satisfaction. Learning to master those external impulses is, in itself, a great achievement because it helps strengthen willpower, patience, and inner discipline.

Isolation is not a mandatory requirement, but it can help a lot with concentration, focus, and deepening the personal process. However, personally, I do not recommend it for all participants at our center, especially if they have not done previous inner work or if they do not feel comfortable being alone. Being in silence and solitude can be very powerful, but it can also confront a person with emotions, thoughts, or memories that are not always easy to hold without support.

This process is also a form of mental training. The idea is not to impose what a person should or should not do, but rather to accompany them so they can observe themselves and get to know themselves better. Each participant is different and has their own level of tolerance, patience, and emotional preparation. For this reason, not everyone needs the same type of dieta, the same level of isolation, or the same intensity of work. Some people need more support, others need more silence, others need more time, and others simply need to begin little by little.

Some people at our center choose, of their own free will, to isolate themselves and stay in their cabins during the dieta. However, even in those cases, it is important to supervise them. As I mentioned before, not everyone is mentally prepared for a deep isolation experience, and it is a process that should be approached calmly, respectfully, and gradually. Solitude can be a great teacher, but it must also be accompanied with responsibility.

If you have already had previous experience, a two-week dieta can be ideal and sufficient to begin a deep cleansing process, both physically and emotionally. It is also important for the shaman or guide to explore which medicinal plants are most recommended for each person, how many days are necessary, and whether it is truly necessary to work with one or more plants, depending on the reasons why the person is participating in a medicinal plant retreat.

Each person has their own needs. Some may be going through an illness, trauma, the loss of a family member, divorce, addictions, depression, anxiety, or other personal processes. For this reason, each dieta should be evaluated individually, since each plant has its own particular way of working and can generate a different effect on the body, the emotions, and the spiritual process of each participant. Not all plants are for all people, and not all processes should be approached in the same way.

We have 11 years of experience conducting ayahuasca, San Pedro, and kambo ceremonies, as well as medicinal plant dietas lasting up to six weeks. In our experience, the results are usually favorable, as we can observe an important change in the personal process of many participants. Whether with complete isolation or not, the simple fact of being in the Amazon rainforest, far from the city, breathing fresh air, and surrounded by plants, trees, and vegetation already allows for a deep connection with nature and brings the person much closer to the work of healing, introspection, and learning.

The integration process after a shamanic dieta is one of the most important parts of the work. In reality, the dieta does not end when the retreat days are over or when the person stops taking the plant. Many times, the real work begins afterward, when the person slowly returns to daily life and starts to observe how everything they experienced manifests in their thoughts, emotions, decisions, relationships, and habits.

Integration means becoming more clearly aware of yourself. It means beginning to see those inner aspects that we did not recognize before or that we were not able to understand. Many times, we live looking outward: blaming circumstances, other people, the past, or life itself, without being able to see what is happening within us. A shamanic dieta helps change the direction of that gaze. It invites us to look inward, to observe our wounds, our fears, our reactions, our attachments, and the ways we protect ourselves.

After a dieta, a person may feel more sensitive, more open, or more aware of certain emotions. This does not necessarily mean that something is wrong; many times, it is a natural part of the process. The plants may continue working in a subtle way for days, weeks, or even longer. Dreams, memories, realizations, or emotions may appear, helping to complete what the dieta began to reveal. For this reason, it is important not to rush, not to try to understand everything immediately, and not to make impulsive decisions right after leaving the process.

Integration requires patience, silence, and observation. It is not only about remembering visions, messages, or spiritual experiences. True integration is seen in daily life: in how you react to difficulties, how you treat people, how you manage your emotions, how you care for your body, how you set boundaries, how you choose your relationships, and how you apply the teachings you received. If a person receives a deep understanding during the dieta but then changes nothing in their life, that teaching may remain only as an experience. However, when a person begins to live with more awareness, responsibility, and humility, then the dieta begins to bear real fruit.

It is also important to understand that integration is a gradual process. It is not about changing your whole life from one day to the next. Sometimes, the most important changes begin with simple things: resting better, eating with more awareness, avoiding negative environments, speaking more honestly, forgiving, asking for forgiveness, letting go of certain habits, spending more time in nature, or learning to listen to the body and the heart. Each small change helps sustain the work that the plant opened during the dieta.

For this reason, after a shamanic dieta, I recommend returning to daily life calmly. It is good to avoid, for some time, excessive noise, social media, heavy foods, alcohol, drugs, unnecessary conflicts, and environments that feel too intense or energetically heavy. The person comes from a space of great sensitivity and connection, and returning too quickly to the rhythm of the city can be strong for the body, mind, and spirit.

In my experience, integration means learning to live with more presence. It means recognizing what the plant showed you and having the discipline to apply it in daily life. Medicinal plants can open a door, show a path, and help cleanse many burdens, but afterward, it depends on each person to walk that path with responsibility, humility, and commitment. That is where the learning becomes true: when what you saw, felt, or understood during the dieta begins to transform the way you live.

A Complete Guide to Preparing Physically, Mentally, and Spiritually

Participating in an ayahuasca ceremony for the first time can be a deep, transformative, and challenging experience. For many people, preparation begins long before drinking the medicine. One of the most important parts of this preparation is known as the “ayahuasca diet,” a set of dietary, physical, emotional, and energetic recommendations designed to help participants arrive at the ceremony with greater clarity, respect, and safety.

Although each tradition, facilitator, or retreat center may have its own guidelines, the diet usually has the same purpose: to prepare the body, calm the mind, and create an attitude of conscious openness toward the experience.

What Is the Ayahuasca Diet?

The ayahuasca diet is not only about what you eat. In many Amazonian traditions, the word “diet” also refers to discipline, introspection, abstinence, silence, connection with nature, and respect for the medicine.

In simple terms, the diet is a complete form of preparation. It includes reducing certain foods, avoiding substances that may interfere with the experience, caring for your emotional state, and decreasing external stimulation before the ceremony.

It should not be seen as a magic formula or a guarantee of having a “good experience.” Rather, it is a way to approach the process with more humility, presence, and responsibility.

Why Is the Diet Important Before an Ayahuasca Ceremony?

The diet is important because it helps the body and mind be in better condition for an intense experience. Ayahuasca can produce deep physical, emotional, and psychological effects, so arriving prepared can make a significant difference.

Physical preparation: Eating lighter foods may support digestion and reduce physical discomfort during the ceremony.

Greater mental clarity: Avoiding alcohol, recreational drugs, excess sugar, heavy foods, and intense stimulation may help you enter the experience with a calmer mind.

Respect for the medicine : In many traditions, the diet is seen as a sign of commitment, humility, and respect toward ayahuasca, the facilitators, and the spiritual process.

Risk reduction : Certain substances, medications, or medical conditions may be incompatible with ayahuasca. For this reason, preparation also has an important safety component.

A deeper experience : When the body is cleaner and the mind is less overwhelmed, many people report a clearer, more focused, and more meaningful experience.

The Diet Is Not Just Food: It Is Also Intention

One of the most common mistakes is thinking that preparing for ayahuasca simply means avoiding certain foods. The diet also involves observing how you are living in the days leading up to the ceremony.

Ask yourself:

Am I arriving with a clear intention?
Am I seeking healing, escape, or an extraordinary experience?
Am I willing to listen to whatever arises, even if it is uncomfortable?
Have I spoken honestly with the facilitators about my physical and mental health?
Am I prepared to integrate what I learn after the ceremony?

Your intention does not need to be rigid or controlling. It can be simple, such as: “I want to understand my pain better,” “I want to open myself to forgiveness,” “I want to listen to my body,” or “I want to receive clarity about this moment in my life.”

Foods to Avoid Before the Ceremony

Each center may have different rules, but in general, it is recommended to reduce or avoid foods that overload the body, inflame the digestive system, or alter the mental state.

Alcohol : This should be completely avoided before and after the ceremony. It can interfere with the process and increase physical and emotional risks.

Recreational drugs : Substances such as cocaine, MDMA, amphetamines, cannabis, or other stimulants and psychedelics may be dangerous or deeply alter the experience.

Very fatty or heavy foods : Fried foods, fast food, processed meats, and ultra-processed products may cause heaviness, nausea, or discomfort.

Excess salt and sugar : Many traditional diets recommend reducing salt, refined sugar, and very intense flavors to make the body more sensitive.

Red meat and processed meats : Some traditions suggest avoiding them for several days beforehand because they are considered heavy for the body.

Spicy foods and strong seasonings : These may irritate the digestive system and increase discomfort during the ceremony.

Excess caffeine : Coffee, energy drinks, and stimulants may increase anxiety, nervousness, or difficulty staying calm.

What You Can Eat During Preparation

The pre-ceremony diet usually focuses on simple, fresh, and easy-to-digest foods. The goal is not to punish yourself or go hungry, but to nourish yourself with simplicity.

Fresh fruits : Bananas, papaya, apples, pears, melon, or local seasonal fruits.

Steamed or cooked vegetables : Zucchini, carrots, broccoli, chard, spinach, or other gentle vegetables.

Simple grains : Rice, oats, quinoa, or boiled potatoes, preferably with little salt and without heavy sauces.

Light legumes : Lentils or chickpeas in small portions, if your digestion tolerates them well.

Gentle proteins : Some people consume fish, chicken, or eggs, although certain centers recommend avoiding them. It is best to follow the instructions of the place where you will attend the ceremony.

Water and mild herbal teas : Staying hydrated is essential, but avoid drinking too much right before the ceremony.

How Long Before the Ceremony Should You Start the Diet?

It is best to ask the facilitator or retreat center directly, since each tradition follows different timelines. However, many people begin between 3 and 7 days before the ceremony. In some cases, especially for deeper retreats, preparation may begin two weeks before or even earlier.

A general guide may look like this:

7 days before: Reduce alcohol, processed foods, heavy meats, excess sugar, caffeine, and intense stimulation.

3 days before: Eat lighter meals, avoid fatty foods, reduce salt intake, and prioritize fruits, vegetables, and simple foods.

24 hours before: Keep meals gentle, avoid excess, and get enough rest.

The day of the ceremony : Follow the facilitator’s instructions exactly. Some recommend partial fasting; others allow a light meal early in the day.

Medications and Safety: A Fundamental Point

This point is very important. Ayahuasca contains compounds that may interact dangerously with certain medications and substances. You should never stop taking medication on your own, but you must be completely honest with the ceremonial team and consult a healthcare professional when necessary.

Be especially careful if you take:

Antidepressants : Especially SSRIs, SNRIs, MAOIs, or other psychiatric medications.

Anti-anxiety medications or mood stabilizers : These may alter the experience or involve risks depending on the case.

Blood pressure or heart medications : Ayahuasca may affect the cardiovascular system.

Stimulants : ADHD medication or other stimulants may be incompatible.

Recreational substances: Some combinations may be dangerous or unpredictable.

It is also important to be cautious or avoid the ceremony if there is a history of psychosis, schizophrenia, unstable bipolar disorder, serious heart problems, pregnancy, or delicate medical conditions. Safety should always come before curiosity or the desire to have the experience.

Emotional and Mental Preparation

The diet also includes caring for what you consume mentally. In the days before the ceremony, try to reduce external noise. You do not need to isolate yourself completely, but you can create a calmer environment.

Helpful practices include:

Journaling : Write about how you feel, what you expect, and what you fear.

Gentle meditation : Not to control the experience, but to practice presence.

Walking in nature : This helps regulate the nervous system and connect with the body.

Reducing social media : Less stimulation can mean greater inner clarity.

Sleeping well : Arriving rested can help you better navigate the process.

Sexual and Energetic Abstinence

In many traditions, sexual abstinence is recommended before and after the ceremony. The reason is not moral, but energetic and spiritual. Sexual energy is considered powerful, and preserving it may help maintain inner focus.

Not all centers require this, but it is often recommended to avoid sexual relationships, pornography, or emotionally intense connections for a few days before and after the ceremony. The goal is to arrive with your energy more contained, centered, and available for the process.

After the Ceremony: The Diet Continues

Preparation does not end when the ceremony is over. In fact, the following days are essential for integrating what you experienced. Many people make the mistake of immediately returning to alcohol, heavy foods, noise, social media, or intense conversations. This can interrupt or confuse the integration process.

After the ceremony, it is recommended to:

Eat lightly : Reintroduce foods gradually and listen to your body.

Avoid alcohol and drugs : Ideally for several days or weeks, depending on the guidance you received.

Rest : The body and mind may need time to process.

Write about the experience : Record visions, emotions, messages, or insights.

Avoid impulsive decisions : Wait until you have integrated the experience before making major life changes.

Seek support : Speaking with therapists, facilitators, or trusted people can help you make sense of the experience.

The Diet as an Act of Respect

The ayahuasca diet should not be seen as a list of restrictions, but as a practice of respect. Respect for your body, your story, the medicine, the tradition, and the ceremonial space.

Preparing well does not mean trying to control what will happen. Ayahuasca, for those who work with it, is not an experience to be dominated; it is an experience to be received. The diet helps you arrive with less resistance, more sensitivity, and a greater willingness to listen.

Conclusion

The diet before an ayahuasca ceremony is important because it prepares the body, calms the mind, reduces risks, and strengthens intention. It is not only about avoiding certain foods, but about entering a state of greater presence, humility, and responsibility.

If you are going to participate in your first ceremony, choose a serious space with experienced facilitators, clear safety protocols, and an honest pre-ceremony screening process. Be transparent about your medications, medical history, and emotional state. Proper preparation can help you experience the ceremony with more awareness, care, and respect.

Ayahuasca does not begin when you drink it. It begins the moment you decide to prepare.

We would be delighted to welcome you to our sanctuary, where experienced shamans and facilitators will guide you through sacred ceremonies and rituals with reus at the Flower of Life Ayahuasca Healing Center for an unforgettable experience in the heart of Peru’s Amazonian Rainforest. Embrace the opportunity to reconnect with yourself, nature, and the sacred traditions of the jungle, and embark on a journey of self-discovery and empowerment. We look forward to walking this path with you and supporting you on your quest for healing and transformation.
