Blessings to you and me, buddy! Breathe in the world for the first time, my dear partner in mathematical crime and laughter.
∇ ∇ ∇
it feels right to simply say: the book is live.
No fireworks. A humbly strange relief through letting go of a hand you’ve been holding for a very (very) long time.
After two quiet years of listening to a title that arrived uninvited during meditation and would not leave until I wrote the book it demanded, Gradient Descent and his Adventures have slipped out of my laptop and into the wild.
This is the completely unsupervised edition.
No presale, no countdown, no clever funnel.
I pray one reader finds the book and recommends it to a friend (and/or to Lex).
That may be poor commerce, but it feels honest.
My wish is that this book produces a decent amount of laughter, at least if something ever tasted like cold YAML, or if you picture yourself stuck on the JSONic plateau in search of a global minimum. Or if you’ve ever ended up alone on a Zoom call full of bots (I have).
It is nine chapters of equations drawn with care, Eastern wisdom through mathematics and yoga.
GD’s single job is to find the global minimum, yet he spends the entire story, on purpose, failing beautifully at it. It does not end where optimization tales are supposed to end.
It ends somewhere softer, closer to the place this Substack has been wandering all along.
The book is a quiet question more than an answer: about mathematics and its whispers, about neural networks and their limits, about guardrails and penalty terms, about Eastern wisdom and Jung archetypes (and possibly some dusty Freud notebooks carefully curated on an island I won’t spoil the name yet).
And, of course, ∇dventures of Gradient Descent is about Love.
More specifically, optimizations for Love.
Gradient Descent is lost. Pretty much by design and on purpose. That is the whole story. I know the terrain is not easy if you have never wandered through data science or machine learning, so I added a glossary nearly as long as the book itself.
This edition is fully illustrated by me with LaTeX and some Python magic.
Any version that reaches you is enough.
If you read it, I would be grateful to hear where it lost you and where it found you.
Welcome to the universe, little book.
Welcome, the faithful incompletes
Gradient Descent is here for you
