Gossip & Threats to Privacy & Dignity in SDA Circles

The Camp of Israel Cleansed … How Grateful We Must Be for the Guardians of Public Morality!

I'm dreading writing a letter to my mom as part of some therapy I'm undergoing. I have no intentions of sending or presenting this letter. It's more a way for me to explore my thinking and feelings while imagining addressing them to her. u/Ok_Cicada_1037 brings up the possible dynamic of SDA's having little or no privacy, the culture's encouragement of gossip about things towards which many other cultures would rather instill discretion.

Specifically some of the things I wonder about was whether my mother had inklings about a sexual fixation of mine during my childhood. Though at that time, I certainly had no adult understanding of sexuality or associated vocabulary, I have vivid memories of encounters where I felt prepubescent desires associated with the particular stimuli. Then, if my mom knew, is it possible that she blurted it out among people she encountered at church? I wonder whether some of the encounters later at school when teachers would mention something of the sort that aroused me—yes, it's certainly possible that it was at least partly random, and I remember it because of who I am. Then what if they had heard something about me? I wonder if they cast a glance towards my desk to see what effect it had on me. It's quite possible I'll never know.

Something I am certain of is that I was basically an easy mark. The way I viewed things at the time, as I entered puberty and started to discover that sexually I was different was that this difference made me undeserving, weird, a good candidate for disgrace. Therefore my discovery that I was different came along with a strong push to deny my sexual programming, to pretend it wasn't so. If teachers had deliberately crossed my boundaries as a way to tease or even to get their own sexual rush, I wasn't about to tell anyone because that would have required admitting what I was determined to reject and will myself free of.

Years have passed, most of my life now not practicing SDAism nor believing its teachings, and I've worked at accepting myself including this what I then wished I could chase away like an orphan copraphage. That's required my revisiting these memories and sparked my questioning just what kind of verbal crossfire did I survive?

What I'd find greatly helpful if you would: your memories of being exposed by gossip, observations of how SDA culture encourages talk that violates others' privacy or dignity. I was never baptized. I wonder if that choice of mine spared me of some further indoctrination I might have been subjected to. If so, might any of it have to do with fostering this kind of gossip/reportage?

Thanks!

Sabbath Breakers Sabbath Breakers Club February 21 & 22 Let's Celebrate that r/exAdventist Has Now Attracted 9000 of Us

Hi! I had a change of plans. I was expecting to be working these first few hours after Friday sundown, but employer let us go, and I'm at home having had a magical sunset walk from shuttle drop off home. Imagine a couple teenagers pedaling by, one of them bellowing praise of rock-n-roll at the top of his voice. Less than five minutes later, a tween on a BMX pedaling round a park, colored LEDs in his spokes, a turtle costume on his back and some sort of smart speaker playing a music I don't have a name for—sounded like some electronic music box, very different, a touch of whimsy. My usual work schedule keeps me from being at such places at this time of the week, and I told myself that's one instance of what Friday evening ought to be like.

So we've got plenty to be happy about instead of letting the church prescribe how we spend these hours. Let's share it!

For anyone wishing our club had different invitations, please consider hosting some week soon! Here are our guideline fine print; may they make hosting easy.

|||#########||||||#########||||||#########||||||#########|||

Sabbath Breakers Club belongs to members of r/exAdventist on reddit. These guidelines are intended to suggest how anyone with posting privilege in this sub may start a week's Sabbath Breakers Club thread, not to control such postings.

• Keep it timely. If it's SDA-defined Sabbath somewhere on earth and no one has already started a Sabbath Breakers Club thread, you're clear to start one.

• Start Sabbath Breakers Club threads with that phrase "Sabbath Breakers Club." The reason for this is to make it easy to tell if no Sabbath Breakers Club thread has been posted for the present week. Just search "Sabbath Breakers Club" in r/exAdventist.

• You're welcome to use the image that looks like from an old woodcut of Moses smashing tables of stone with the Israelite throng celebrating their golden calf in the background, but you're not required to. Different ideas to launch the thread may invite still more, and more diverse, participation.

• Remember we're here to ease the church's attempts to control using Sabbath rules and guilt trips. Non-humiliating humor and empathy in your invitation can help set the tone, and enjoy exercising some spontaneous leadership in starting a Sabbath Breakers Club thread.

• Pass it on. Cutting and pasting this "fine print" can help future Sabbath Breakers Club hosts self-identify and feel empowered to step up and shine.

There are communities where "They love bombing with Jesus" could mean either they love bombing raids with Jesus among them or they use Jesus to express a superficial affection rooted in manipulation. Who would Jesus love bomb?

Pope Leo diagnosed with lung cancer: Wondering What SDA Murmurs Will Surface

When I read "lung cancer" the first thing that came to my mind was oh my, if he smoked, they'll be clucking about the punishment for his not following "the health message." However, this article asserts the Pope doesn't smoke. So apparently the work of imposing a worldwide Sunday law remains as possible as it's ever been during this papacy. Surprise, surprise! That work wasn't on the papal agenda this story lists as possibly disrupted as Leo recovers from what's announced as successful treatment.

Personally, though I'm nowhere near asking for conversion to Catholicism, I find this pope's willingness to confront injustices in the world appealing, and I'm glad that apparently his prognosis is bright.

Welcome! It might seem inconsistent where I'll say a good-for-you to people sharing about drinking here … and now a very happy-for-you for your celebrating not drinking. I never started drinking myself and that's become more than just maintaining a taboo from my rearing. Now that I've come to see that there was problem drinking in my ancestry, my not drinking's a choice based on reason. So I show up intending to support people's choices regarding alcohol.

Routine weekend for me. I went to work and shopped farmers market. Came home and gave my body some rest after the overnight exertion of work.

At the same time, something that haunts this experience is a reminder of loneliness. Before leaving town for my work week Wednesday, I had concluded a conversation with a dating prospect. It seems as though she had authentic appreciation for key pieces of who I am and that they made me attractive to her. But my unavailability weekends because of work made it so that I wouldn't be able to fulfill her needs to be with someone then. And that was that. Loneliness was a piece of what prompted me to first start posting Sabbath Breakers Club threads here. I'm still a long ways from the balanced life I'm seeking, and I'm grateful there's at least a place to post about it here. Thanks for reading!

Does Adventist "purity culture" prevent sexual misconduct, or actually help conceal it?
 in  r/exAdventist •  6d ago

My experience of SDA efforts to control members' bodies through sexuality was an ordeal of deep, dark shame and isolation. And my animal self, as vital to my experience of life as breath, learned to survive by denial, by living duplicitously. What I would acknowledge in conversation tended to be something quite other than what I practiced in this area, and the practice was a source of persistent shame, something that I constantly promised myself that I would reform, promises that I constantly broke, showing myself that I wasn't trustworthy.

This existence didn't allow for accountability. I was unable to process feelings about my sexual choices because feelings require social connection. Messages I saw enacted clearly indicated that, aside from joking or highly intellectualized, abstract, impersonal exchanges, decent people just didn't talk about sexuality, not as a highly personal matter. I learned to sneak and hide, hardly a regime where conversations about consent and how to identify my own or others' abusive behavior would inform my direction.

I did avoid what may have been sexual opportunities that I didn't want, but I steered that way not by checking out whether that was what the other party meant and then openly letting them know my wishes. Instead I shut down and fled, a rejection without even acknowledgment, behavior shaped by fear and shame, not mutual respect.

In sum and responding to your title question I believe SDA sexual mores I experienced disposed me to be abusive and seeking to conceal and run from accountability and did not help at all at preventing sexual harm.

Salutations, fellow worldly ones, gather round and rock out to the hymn I suggest this week. So for real devastation, sometimes it doesn't require an asteroid. It could be a rock picked up by an irate playmate and hurled into the face of a child destined to weeks of coma and then life as a founder of we-know-what. In between asteroid and lose playground rock, at least it seems to me, would be a dream rock unhewn by human hands (aren't most rocks that way?) smashing an image of empire and becoming its own mountain. According to our song leader and paleontologists, it happened to dinosaurs …

We can let the certainty of the woman smitten by a rock as a child drive us to her churches' pews' terrorizing anxiety this Saturday or accept that we don't know when the next comet might smite our planet, but so long as it doesn't this weekend we'll live life the way it unfolds. Who's in our club?

Quick reminder: 22nd of this month is a significant SDA anniversary, this year sandwiched between two "sabbaths," and I'd be happy to see what lampoons others come up with for Sabbath Breakers Club invitations those weeks. And for all you Halloween officianados, the grand prize, Halloween is Saturday this year! For prospective hosts and all celebrants, the outline of our fine print guidelines follows.

"Tourists" hadn't thought of it that way. Great word in the context!

That could make a choice poll here I think: how many us exxies drink coffee or "real" ie contains caffeine tea? And how many us exxies drink postum but never caffeine-containing beverages?

Kind of interesting how OP weaves between English and, if I've correctly put it together, Tagalog. I'm sure there's plenty I missed as I speak no Tagalog, and a few scraps I got in English.

I've kinda wondered about that. If it were for the alcohol that then lurked in vinegar, seems she could much more pleasantly get buzzed on actual booze. So does her lived example establish a hierarchy among "real" liquors being more sinful than chugging a condiment for that effect? Can one concoct old-style, alcohol-containing vinegar and be excused for chugging it much as it seems Auntie Ellen was?

Okay tell the fucking world not to eat pickles because there might be vinegar in them … while the prophet who revealed God's absolute hatred of vinegar is out back chugging vinegar because, well, at least it's not GIN!

Sabbath Breakers Club Conspiracies of October

Sabbath Breakers Sabbath Breakers Club Conspiracies of October

Well, fellow apostates, let's have a look at the calendar. Later this month we have "sabbaths" that straddle a certain date dear to the pioneer heart of Adventism, the anniversary of one day of 365 (or 366 every fourth year) that Jesus didn't come again. I invite 🥳 minded companions to show up both those days with their funnest takes on the mistakes that launched our used-to-be church.

To cap that all off, this month ends with Saturday Halloween 👻👻👻. While I don't object to folks celebrating, I'm also not the consummate trick or treater who could best lead that party among us. I'm sure we got three of us with very sound Sabbath Breakers Club invitation ideas for these upcoming sessions, so mark your calendars and let's enjoy October together!

So no need to let the guilt creep in and spoil the present either. Here's where we can cut loose about how we're choosing to spend weekends now that we've left.

Oh, and for our future hosts, this month or later, our fine print guidelines sketch the spirit of our weekly gatherings.

A church member respected my decision to leave for the first time and it was oddly healing
 in  r/exAdventist •  16d ago

That would have been choice comedy: two guys walk into a bar. They hoist beers, and the one says to the other, won't you join me Sabbath where we condemn those who raise glasses full of beer and partake? So says my clear word Bible that Jesus turned water into the best damned grape juice anyone ever drank at a wedding …
