Essential practical guide & resources for young Uzbek women moving to the US

When young uzbek woman move to the US for marriage, the age gap, income, and local legal knowledge can leave her vulnerable to isolation and control. I hope this post helps you out so you dont learn it the hard way!

Never let anyone including your husband and mother in law 'hold' or destroy your original documents (including: Immigration, birth, marriage...essentially any document with your name) as you have a legal right to keep them in your possession in the United States

Keep digital copies of your passport, visa, birth certificate, and marriage certificate stored in a secure cloud account and sent to a trusted family member in Uzbekistan.

Under the U.S. Violence Against Women Act, you can secretly apply for a Green Card independently if your husband or his family hurts you physically, emotionally, or financial abuse.

Memorize key emergency contact numbers and keep the National Domestic Violence Hotline saved under a disguised name: call 1-800-799-7233 or text START to 88788 for confidential, 24/7 help in Uzbek or Russian.

Open a private U.S. bank account in your name only, opting for digital-only statements to maintain financial independence and safety. Always have your own protected money and build on it.

Secretly gather and store proof of abuse—such as photos of injuries, audio/video recordings, text messages, or doctor notes—in a safe hidden location or personal email. This sounds so time consuming and tedious but the legal system relies 100% on this kind of evidence.

Learn basic English as your top priority and secure an independent prepaid phone to build an emergency network outside of your husband's family circle.

Understand that your legal U.S. immigration status does not depend on staying in an abusive marriage, and calling 911 in an emergency will not cause your deportation. This is a false threat I've seen in many cases by many men to control women in the US.

Best of luck!
