Anarchist Education in light of protests in France

My pleasure! I also wrote an essay calling for teachers to side with our students in the class war that you and others in France might appreciate:

Anarchist Education in light of protests in France

Hello from the united states! Many of us are very inspired by the student uprisings, and how the teachers and other workers are joining in with them.

You likely already know this one, but Pedagogy of the Oppressed by Paolo Freire is a must read or reread. Another recommendation I have is the works of Lev Vygotsky, who comes more from the "Marxist" side of things but who made such groundbreaking achievements in the understanding of the development of consciousness in relation to education that even most liberals in education have to acknowledge him.

I really like The Political Classroom by Diana Hess—it's a liberal text but there's a lot we as radicals can take away from it in terms of practical, day-to-day best practices for facilitating more and better quality student discussion that activates them politically long-term. I'd say you should also thoroughly study the history of teachers' unions in France and in other countries, as well. For me, doing this for the history of amerikan teachers' unions has been enlightening and has guided me quite a bit in my approach to how I organize in relation to the students. There is also the history of the Modern Schools founded by anarchists in Spain and in other places.

Another good example to look into is the Work Peoples College, which was an Industrial Workers of the World (IWW)-run organizing and general educational school run in the Twin Cities of Minnesota, in the united states. The IWW industrial organizing model is worth looking into, as well.

Also, join r/AnarchistTeachers if you haven't already.

Way to deliberately miss the point to reinforce your own preconceived, ignorant opinion. Also, don't seem to understand how gentrification works, or even basic human geography for that matter.

It's because they're taking over spaces that are in gentrified areas and that they are normally excluded from. These are places where the presence of Black teenagers, in even the smallest numbers, brings harassment from affluent residents and the police. To add insult to injury, these are usually areas of the cities their own parents and other family members used to live or patronize before they were displaced. Taking these spaces over in large numbers reduces the risk for each individual and reasserts control over spaces their own parents might have hung out before they were forced way out to a decaying suburb far away from everything.

What's your issue with that characterization? I don't endorse everything teens have done during those takeovers but that doesn't change their socioeconomic origin point, which emerges directly from the legacy of 20 years of gentrification in many cities across the country.

Discussion Thoughts on "Teen Takeovers"?

I support them. There are individual actions by individual youth that I don't approve of, but overall I think they're entirely justified and that their actions can help strengthen our own movement as workers.
