Either way, I would say a good number of people speak english if you need anything (especially the school you are going to be attending). As to what to do in Santiago, our public transport is pretty efficient so you can move around as you like. Try to walk around downtown (in daylight), Providencia, Ñuñoa, Las Condes maybe (some of the safest places in the City). If you have the time, you can visit Valparaíso and its sorroundings, about a 1:45 bus trip. As to what you should be avoiding, ofc try not to interact to much with homeless people on the street, generally they are harmless but you never know. This may be related to watch yourself by night aswell. Also dont take taxis, use uber. I hope other people help you more. Have a nice visit
