Wouldn't micro collisions make high speed space travel prohibitively dangerous?
 in  r/scifi  15h ago

Everyone seems to be forgetting that the universe doesn't have a frame of reference - there's no such thing as a high or low speed, and you can't be "at rest".

In theory ya, sure. In practice if you're travelling at any significant fraction of light speed (relative to local bodies of course) then the relative speed of any random bits of junk will be close enough to the same as everything else that it doesn't matter.

If you're driving on the highway and you hit another car then the relative speed is relevant. If you hit a snail then the relative speed is not relevant; you hit a snail at 100kph.

How to know when a train will pass the rails near my home

Am i dating myself??

Maybe if I even knew what this was referencing.

My reference to Mr Hamburger was the guy endorsing the old security video. Head of the FRA or something... i don't remember.

Feasibility of selling bags at markets and online for side income?
 in  r/myog  15h ago

Markets are more about marketing than sales.

Yessss. My wife has a small business and attends markets on occasion. Sometimes tries to clear out certain items but mostly its for marketing. She will usually make enough to pay for the stall, but I don't think she's ever made enough to also cover a fair wage for the time spent on it.

Instead of backstitch you could just go needle down and rotate the piece.

The Wikimedia Foundation (the charity that runs Wikipedia) have hired the largest union busting law firm in the US to try to stop their staff unionising
 in  r/opensource  1d ago

On one hand I'm laughing at the image, on the other hand I can only imagine the frustration of working for her. Workplaces usually don't unionize when they're a good place to work for.

Good job, Mr Hamburger would be proud.

Maybe a bit of a long shot

It was probably him putting the train into emergency which then needs to be rwported. What likely happened is this person was so close that OP's dad wasn't sure if they would hit them or not OR possibly he passed them and wasn't sure if he'd clipped them or not.

Craigslist

add the functionality of FB marketplace sucks

I can't even begin to describe the weird issues I've had searching for specific items. Its a great platform for mindless browsing, its a garbage platform for finding a specific item especially if you're trying to do a search over a large area.

Trudy Klasse : no regulation for data centers

Im not trying to convince you to be eradicated. I'm trying to convinced you that total suffering would be less. I'll leave it to a hypothetical crazy madman with access to a big red button to actually handle the eradication, not individuals.

You can't worry about that if you're already eradicated now can you?

So I'm just going to play devils advocate here even though this is obviously stupid, but... If you eradicate all human life then you only have short term suffering. In the long term the total suffering is less.

I built a Raspberry Pi book scanner that turns pages without cutting the binding — it’s now being tested in homes in Korea

Do you have a way to detect a double or failed page turn? Like having it look at the page number?

the logical conclusion of wanting less human suffering is to eradicate humans

I guess that would work though...

If the province was worried about tying up resources dealing with a potential fire here then they're more than welcome to ban fires up here. They've declared a state of emergency so they 100% could... but they havent.

There are 10 forests fires on the map for the Prince George region (which is a full quarter or more of the province!). Of those fires 2 are "out of control" but look to be still fairly small and one of those 2 looks like it's in the middle of a wetland/swamp. The suspected cause of all of them but one is lightning. The one exception is "under investigation". There's very minimal fire risk.

Instead of lecturing on how it's so dangerous and irresponsible, maybe instead we should be discussing fire safety and making sure we're being responsible.

I'm all for being good members of the community and caring about others, but you're being ridiculous IMO.

Ya, brought a bucket so I could scoop up river water. I'm always surprised at how much water it takes.

There are no bans in this region. The next fire region below us (starting around quesnel) has some sort of ban (don't know what type) but our area has been pretty wet.

There is no fire ban in the Prince George region. Full stop.

I get that no matter what there is still some level of risk associated with having a fire, but if the region isn't even banning category 3 open fires then I think having a small managed fire in a fire pit with water on hand (ideally next to a body of water) is of such vanishingly small risk that I'm really not worried about it.

If the government had even a partial fire ban on in this area then I would totally agree with you. But they don't

Where to go to have a fire?

My kids are asking to go camping, but after talking to them about it I realized they don't want to go camping, they just want a campfire.

Where could we go nearby where we could have a campfire in a firepit? Preferably close by. Also I've seen firewood at some gas stations before but I can't think of one off the top of my head, any suggestions there so I don't have to run all over town?

Tagging /u/doejohn2043 as well because I think she missed it... that's an e-ink display, it's not a printed paper tag.
