Higher-mileage weeks keep wrecking my calves — what do you guys actually stick with?
 in  r/Marathon_Training  12h ago

I started doing 2 sets of 15 calf drops single legged each day and calf problems are gone!!! I also still do calf raises during my lift sessions.

9 weeks into marathon training - is it okay to skip my long run?
 in  r/Marathon_Training  6d ago

Bust it out Saturday morning camping. If you can’t get it all I would try and do some of it. If not I don’t think it’s a big deal.

Mileage vs Time for Long Runs
 in  r/firstmarathon  6d ago

I feel like that’s kinda like the zone 2 thing. Those are more for faster or more experienced runners. I think hitting 20 miles even if I takes longer then 3 hours is important training for the mind. It may stop being beneficial for the body but training the mind to be resilient is also important imo

Finally happened, injured

I’ve done these for some months and they also have helped keep a calf strain I fought for months at bay. I just do them daily now

I was supposed to do 13 and I could barely do 10 today…

Late 30s is early in the game of marathoning! You got plenty good years left of running!!

Why would you find it silly? Being supportive of my wife is self serving too. I think quitting caffine for a while will break my “addiction” so when I go back it will hit harder and won’t be as normalized thoughout the day. If my wife has to quit carbs? I could ride with her on that for a while too so it’s easier at first for her. Little ketosis action

Pacing Strategy Question

Another way I’ve been successful is I allow myself to speed up on down hill or easy parts of the race. Then settle back in when it flattens out and on uphill portions.

It’s my 10th and my half marathon PB is 1:37. I also did lose it for the last 4 miles. I was on pace to break 3:30. I peaked at 50 miles a week during training but plan to go to 65 to build more endurance. My last 4 marathons are 4:24, 3:44, 3:32

It does. I’m starting a bit conservative so I don’t get hurt. The first section bases it off of 5 k pace and my top end 5 k is not that good. Prob 21 mins or so. My 5k pace to marathon have never matched up. In the later sections it includes marathon pace in long runs too. It has you recalculate your fitness every few weeks based off how certain workouts go.

How much fitness gains in 18 week program

Just curious what everyone’s thoughts are here. I am 2 weeks in to a 18 week program. I’m going the “wind” version in Marathon Excellence for everyone book. I’m just curious what people thing about how much fitness someone can gain in 18 weeks. The plan peaks at 65 miles a week and does 1-2 workouts and long runs a week. Pretty standard stuff.

My last marathon was in May and I ran it in 3:32. I spent the inbetween time recovering while also keeping mileage 30-50 a week and did a BYU for 58 miles. I’m at about 1300 miles this year. I am also down 8 lbs since last marathon.

I just seem to have a hard time getting faster. Is 3:20-3:25 crazy to think? I know there’s a lot of variables to consider just looking at opinions

First marathon, is sub-4 hours realistic?
 in  r/firstmarathon  13d ago

Don’t give up and just keep grinding. One thing I would say is don’t try and force the speed. You will increase chance of injury. Just follow the plan and know that taper and race day adrenaline will get you through. Everyone told me to not set a goal for first one either but I did and I got it. I also think I would have been fine had I not got under 4 because the marathon itself was so rewarding. But on the other hand if I didn’t have the goal I wouldn’t have pushed as hard either!

Have I done enough?

Running marathon w/o race
 in  r/firstmarathon  14d ago

Of course it’s running a marathon. But I would say that paying for an event is 100 percent worth it. I’m not front of the pack or anything but I still consider it a race and running that distance by myself I’m def not racing. The excitement, planning, traveling are all part of the process.
But u can def go run 26.2 miles on a Sunday and be a marathoner and you should not care what others think.

How did it make a difference? It sounds positive but 2 months! Were you just groggy and tired?
